Ok, I admit it. I am a beer snob. One thing I cannot stand is people who only stick to one kind or brand of beer and not willing to try anything new. This thread is dedicated to beer snobs and aficionados. Here is a directory of local microbrews http://www.michiganbeerguide.c om/directory.asp Focus: What are your favorite local brews? What are your recommendations? |

Big Buck Brewery has some great brews. I've only been to their Gaylord location (there is one in Auburn Hills). Their best - Buck Naked (light) and Black River Stout (mildly bitter and thick). The food's not bad and the atmosphere is relaxing. http://www.bigbuck.com/ (Message edited by HYSTERIA on October 07, 2006) |

I really like any beer as long as it is not all hop flavor. DBC and WAB are some of my local favorites and Founder's in grand rapids has some good raspberry beers. |

I use to be a beer snob but eventually I became factory worker and start shift work which allows me to go drinking more therefor drinkin cheap beer is more important. Going to germany was the best because I could drink good beer very cheaply. |

A strong second for the recommendation of Dragonmead, especially the Imperial Stout. I remember that Ashley's in Ann Arbor carried some of their beers. Do they have a brewpub or tasting room somewhere? |

Do they actually have mead at the Dragonmead? I'm not much into beer, preferring the taste of liquor, but have always imagined myself hoisting a cup of mead like the knights of old. I heard once that mead is thick and sweet. Any experts out there? |

I have been buying beer produced by Atwater Brewery in Detroit at a local liquor store. I like their lager which I think is called Atwater Hell. I like to purchase products made in Michigan. |

Gargoyle, Dragonmead can't sell Mead only b/c they don't have a wine license. They do make it, and I have sampled it. It's mighty tasty. They are working on getting their license. Dragonmead is my favorite brewery, hands down. |

Great thread, Patrick. Thanks for posting it. My favorite local brews vary: almost everything at King (Pontiac), Bronze Griffin at Dragonmead (the best micro I’ve ever visited), the Cascade IPA seasonal at Bo’s (Pontiac), the Dwarf at the Detroit Beer Company. I used to like the IPA & the seasonals at Thunder Bay (Great Lakes Crossing), but they’ve since closed. I used to L-O-V-E the vanilla porter at Atwater (I could drink it like it was pop), but they canned it & replaced it with the vanilla java porter, which tastes just okay. I love most of the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company beers, but I once had a pint of a batch of Loonie Kuhnie that had turned, & I can’t drink it anymore. I loved the big beers (Imperial IPA) at Ettoufee in Southfield (same brewer as Thunder Bay), but it’s been sold. Gargoyle, if you want mead, go to Kuhnhenn Brewing Company in Warren. They produce various meads, & I think they’re all wonderful. You can have a wee sample before you buy a glass or a bottle. http://www.kbrewery.com/ They also do classes teaching you how to brew your own beer or wine on premises using their equipment. Great stuff. The old Lutz Hardware store next door to the pub is now a homebrewing store. I thought I once had mead at the Motor City Brewing Works, but I don’t see it on their menu, anymore. |

Oberon or Third Coast in the summer or Brown Ale when it gets cold out from Bell's in Kalabama. Mmm. |

I too miss the Vanilla Porter that was brewed by Stoney Creek (now back to Atwater). That was a special beer, and actually got the vanilla flavor right without resorting to extracts. I know they make the Vanilla Java Porter at Atwater now because Stoney Creek still retains the rights/recipe for the Vanilla Porter they made, but does anyone know if there is a way to still get the Vanilla Porter anywhere? Is Stoney Creek brewing anymore? The Vanilla Java Porter is alright, but I get a clove aftertaste when I drink it, which I would prefer not to have. |

Some of you should look into opening a pub, my brother ran one 20 years ago. He said it cost 10 cents a mug to make and sold for $2.50. |

Steelworker, you seem like a total alcoholic. Are you for real or do you just look for threads with an opening to talk about excessive drinking and your proximity to bars? Either way, I think you're great. |

Gorgeous place. Nice long bar. Lots of different beers, most of which are good. I would recommend it as a happy hour place if you work or live in the city. |

Stoney Creek is in a holding pattern. They aren't brewing right now. When they bought the original Atwater they bought the rights to their recipies, but when current Atwater formed Stoney Creek took their recipies with them. |

Atwater is a great venue and its beers are excellent. Unfortunately, the kitchen is constantly struggling. I know it must be impossibly difficult to find and keep a quality chef and professional waitstaff, but the owners really need to find a way to do better. The DBC seems to be able to do it. Anyway, the amazing brews make the place worth a visit anytime. |

Sadly, I do not like most of the brews at Atwater (except the porters) & never have since it first opened & changed names over the years. I just loved the old vanilla porter. In fact, when I researched a vanilla porter homebrewing recipe, the recipes and comments usually referred to the Stoney Creek Vanilla Porter as setting the standard. Food-wise, there isn't much from which to chose nowadays, but whatever I have is usually good. |

I used to work in the Talon Centre building and would walk over to Atwater a few days a week for lunch and to get a growler filled up on Friday afternoons before heading home. Of the brew-pub type places in the area (yes, I know its technically a micro-brew because it can sell it at stores and not a brew-pub which can only sell it on site), I actually think they had the best beer AND food and never had a problem with the quality... speed on the other hand was always a different story. Its a good thing I had an understanding boss and they didn't mind me coming back from lunch a bit late. My personal favorite on their menu was the Mai Bock but it was only a seasonal |

Mackinaw Brewing Co in TC has a good ale, also a good brown, the names escape me at the moment. A beer out of a brewery in Kalkaska called Ompa lompa ale is very good. |

Another vote for Dragonmead. The wheat beers they make (Belgian and Hefeweitzen) are pretty darn good. I'm on a wheat beer kick right now. In fact that's all I'm brewing at home lately. |
