Unfortunately, Carl's has gone to shit.

Try Baron's in the Omni Hotel near Stroh River Place.

Has it? That is sad to hear. I really enjoyed it my last visit, probably about a year ago.

It's not a steak house, but Mario's has great steaks.

Baron's closed a while ago, I believe. It is now "Fender's Riverside Tavern" or something like that.

Carls, Coach Insignia or the Alley Grille would be my recommendation in the city - depending on your budget.

Out of the city there are some classic old school places:

Mr. Paul's on Groesbeck in Roseville, and the Clawson Chophouse are both steakhouses in the classic sense.

And Kiernan's in Dearborn is pretty good as well.

I like Carl's. It desperately needs an interior make-over. The whole 70's look wears on me every time I go there. But I have never had a bad meal there!

I eat steak everyday, and the best in the city come from my kitchen.

It's not downtown, but John Lafferey's on 7 mile, west of Telegraph gets my vote for steak.

It is Called Fender's now. Don't bother for the steaks, the only redeeming quality is the free pool and $2 drafts from 3-6 weekdays. The Alley Grill has a great filet. I believe it is like $38? The best filet, hands down, is at the Rattlesnake. A little pricey, but well worth it!

Carl's Chop House is still excellent. I wish it wasn't quite so expensive so I could patronize the place more often. As for the decor, I kind of like the time capsule aura of the place.

pretty sure laffrey's is still open. the decor is kinda cheesey 70s in there as well, and very small to boot, but food there is pretty good.

This thread from the Free Press will give more info on great steaks in Detroit:

http://freep.typepad.com/comme nts/2006/03/put_a_fork_in_i.ht ml

For ambiance I love Carl's with the old time relish tray and the 1972 decor.

For a great steak in the north Woodward area Ruth's Chris in Troy and Big Rock in Birmingham do the job quite well

Your best bet is to save money and go to University Foods. DetroitStylin and Barnesfoto turned me on to these and they're great!

Carl's Chop House is overrated. Might've been great back in the day but we went there a few months ago and spend $100-plus on what turned out to be a very mediocre meal.

The Detroit Chop House inside the Hotel St. Regis has excellent steaks and a stylish dining room at not-so-insane prices. It's more in midtown than downtown, but close enough.

Laffrey's is still open, and gets my vote for best steaks in the city. I am partial however, as I was a busboy there in high school. (I always loved it when the cooks would cook the wrong steak, b/c I always got first dibs on the mistakes).

Carl's has definitely gone downhill. I was there for dinner with my mother about a year ago, and ordered a filet and baked potato. They brought me out 1/2 of a potato, and indicated that they were cutting them in two because they were running low. What about giving me a whole potato, and telling people who got there later that you are out? And what about ordering enough of your products? How low-class can you get? I'll never patronize that place again.

The man said:

"Can someone recommend a good steakhouse near downtown?"

So.....

Carl's isn't good. It's quite mediocre-poor.

Mr. Joeyboxers, I concur with the recommendations for the Alley Grill (great), The Rattlesnake Club (great), Coach Insignia (great). I'll throw in The Woodward (good) and Grand City Grille (good). All either downtown or near.

later - naturalsister

It's not technically a steak house, but I had a great steak at Mosaic in greektown. One of the best restaurants of downtown, IMHO.

I'm sorry to hear Baron's closed. Of course, it WOULD be Dabirch who points out that fact!

Can't go wrong with Coach's filet, though.

I second Packman's nomination for Laffrey's. The Filet Mignon will literally melt in your mouth it's so tender over there. They know how to do it right.

No, neighbor. Just a jab at the fact that the last time I made a restaurant recommendation here (Misha's), the place turned out to be closed and it was you who pointed it out!

Care to explain your "sense of realism"? I'm sure it's finely honed.

BTW, how's the house hunting? ;)

Ahh...the Misha's thing.

Very good -- I missed it entirely.

Let's just leave the "finely honed realism" and the house hunting to a cocktail conversation.

That's good news re Laffereys. ... I think I'll eat there next trip home. Their NY strip is excellent, people also swear by their seafood, but I can't imagine getting anything but beef there.

Everyone is looking over one of my favorite little hidden gems downtown......the Monroe Street Cafe'......Very good steak at reasonable prices.....try it, and you'll become a believer as well....I wouldn't venture out beyond the steak and Lamb chops, but they will do it right.

I gotta go with LAFFREY'S Steak on the Hearth.
Great steaks, great atmosphere.
This is old school mobster at it's best.
It also has a large "private" room downstairs that can be reserved for a song.
