Seriously, everyone might make fun of me but the best Mexican food I have ever had was at Chipotle... yes, it's only burritos, but the ingredients are fine, all organic, with grain raised meats... it's fresh, natural and organic! |

Patrick, the place across from Oakland Mall is called Grand Azteca. There is also one in Warren on Dequindre just north of I 696. Grand Azteca is quite good. Juan's Hacienda used to be good until they quit using Tequila in the Margaritas. Now they don't use enough to get a fly high... |

There's a very good place on Vernor across from Ryan's Foods called Taqueria Mexico — it's advertised by a giant Pepsi awning — that is very good and affordable. None of those wonderful Mexican pilsners, however. I also ate some fine chile rellenos once at a similarly alcohol-free establishment on Livernois several blocks north of Michigan Avenue. I'm also a big fan of the seafood entrees and ambiance at Los Galanes. Speaking of booze, the late Agave had the best margaritas bar none. Why did that place close? |

Typical suburban response. I have to say my new favorite is Mexican Village, hands down the best I've had, beating out my previous favorite, Mexican Town Restaurant. I say you should try any in and around south-west. they are all so different with unique styles and specialities. One think that I have found that is constant. It all tastes a little better with a few beers and a shot of good tequila. And don't be afraid of the roadside chicken grills. Their sauces and beans are to die for. |

Xochilmilco can't be good if it's popular and the suburbanites like it. I also hate it when my great exclusive bands sell out and actually become mainstream! I agree with Xochilmilco, Armandos (can't beat the lunch buffet) and El Nibble Nook. While not necessarily "Mexican", I really like Qdoba for their steak burritos. |

I can remember back in the 60's when Xochimilchos was a small two-room storefront restaurant. You used to enter from the door right on the corner. When you entered, if you were a "gringo" you were directed to one room. If you were Mexican-American, the other room. The restaurant had a real, authentic feel to it, much like Mexican Village thirty years ago. Popularity and expansion has changed it, although it's still one of our favorite destinations for Mexican fare. |

My favorites in Detroit are El Zocalo and Los Golanes. I get Tex-Mex here in Austin, and have had interior food in the Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, Harlingen, etc). Places like Xochilmilcho appeal to the people who have never had real "Mexican" food. The hot sauce is "wimpy", the chips are dripping in grease, and the food is bland. When I have been to Xochis there has never been any Hispanic people there. That tells me something - they are targeting the "gringos". El Zocalo and Los Golanes had the "wimp" sauce but had real "hot" sauce for those that can appreciate it. I have not been to Mexican Village but will try it next time I am in town. If you ever go to Jackson, there is a place owned by a dude from Guatamala named Mario, he lived across the street from my parents for awhile. The restaurant is El Ranchito on E. Ganson Street near Foote Hospital. He has authentic interior food and a hot sauce that I can hardly manage. Best place in Michigan for Mexican/Central American food. By the way, whoever invented the "wet burrito" and called that Mexican food? The only place I have ever seen that is in Michigan and it is basically a tortilla with beans coated with canned tomatoes and melted cheese. Disgusting to say the least!!!! |

Any restaurant in Mexicantown is acceptable for my taste buds. Sin embargo, se recomiendo que visten a Xochilmico, porque la comida está rica y barata. Xochimilco offers delicious, inexpensive dishes. Some of the other restaurants, which are still worth the visit, seem to have exceptionally high prices. I simply hope that the district retains its uniqueness with the influx of tourists, particularly with the soon-to-be-opened supermercado. By the way, [totally off-topic] it was amazing to see Mexicans rocking the Detroit Old(e) English D logo during the World Series. Some of them did not even no the exact location of Detroit, but they knew the it is that next, cool thing about the United States. It made me so proud to witness this. La Cina is pretty good. One time they gave me 4 times my order by accident. I know mexican food is usually filling, but this was out of line. Sierra Station has goooood cheese and really big plates, but the prices are up there. And don't plan on doing much at all after you eat. Also a big fan of Grand Azteca. I'm afraid to go in the city because people like supersport might spray me down with beans and beat me into a guacamole pulp. hehe |

Just made a startling new discovery: El Barzon on Junction just south of Michigan (Behind Zorba's Coney) Chef Norberto is from Puebla, one of the gastronomic centers of Mexico, so now besides the usual Jalisco fare, and the dull cheese and lard heavy texmix fare at Xochi's, we have real MOLE and PIPIAN sauces...as if that wasn't enough, Norberto spent many years making pizza in Brooklyn, then cooking italian at a place in Southfield, so say hello to SWD's first Mex-Italian Cuisine.Enchiladas or thin-crust pizza?..Would you like Flan or Tiramisu for dessert? Serving Sea Bass on Junction is a pretty daring move. Hats off to Norberto and his wife. I'll go back soon and try the Italian dishes. |

After reading the review Barnesfoto posted directly above, I went with a friend to El Barzon for dinner tonight. The restaurant is definitely off the Mexican Town strip. It's only been open for two weeks or so. The whole place has been redone very simply. My friend and I were the only non-Spanish speakers there. The owner/chef came out several times to greet us and suggest dishes. A hot chili sauce and a bright green sauce came with the fresh, hot crisp chips. Then came Italian bread with bowls of sun-dried tomato and chopped olive spreads. I had the mole chicken which was quite good; but perhaps a bit overcooked. My friend had a homemade, fresh pasta shell dish with a cream and porcini mushroom sauce. The owner brought out a small sample so we could taste it before ordering. Not only was the dish really delicious, it was beautifully presented with chopped flat leaf parsley tossed around on top. Thank you, Barnesfoto for the review of El Barzon. I certainly plan to return. |

Neilr, don't thank me, thank Chef Norberto for daring to aspire to greatness. I'm still thinking about the red sauce, made from Chiles de Arbol, like so many other red sauces, yet wildly different. Now you mention chopped olive and SDT spreads, and it just makes me want to go back sooner. |

Is that the "Chinese and Mexican" place? Your turn to try something new. I returned to El Barzon today and had Strozapreti alla Norcina and Cavatelli alla Boscailola, stuff that Norberto learned to make when he worked at Il Posto... "That's not Mexican!" some will say...Fine! I had the chips with the wonderful red sauce too. Next time, I'm gonna try the Miciote, (steamed, spiced meat)- something I've only had in Mexico City. |
