How many kids did you have come to your door trick or treating last night? I’ve always considered this as an (albeit unscientific) indication of the relative health of my neighborhood. I live in Warrendale, on the west side, and last night wasn’t too bad. I counted 111 children, 80% of which were under the age of 12. One thing that’s becoming more common is that at least 50% of them were in cars. That is understandable, however, since on both sides of my street, for a block in each direction there were only about six houses passing out treats. In the old days (1960’s) there would be hundreds of kids on the street and very few dark houses. On the other hand, I remember years not too long ago when I’d get less than 25 kids. |

We got about 30 or 40 kids in West Village. Half were in cars as well. I think they were in Indian Village getting their full-size candy bars. I would be too. |

Didn't count but we had lots of kids in Lafayette Park, including my own. Unlike past years I didn't notice so many in cars. We had some Indian Village kids in LP, and I know at least one LP kid who was in IV. When I was a kid in Warrendale we would go all the way from Joy Road to Warren and back on our street. |

Didn't count, but I went through 17 bags of candy and another 20 snack bags of Better Made chips when the candy ran out. I'd estimate some 250+ kids minimum. Had to shut my light off around 7:30 when I ran out. |

Naturally, the reason there isnt as many kids trick or treating in the city compared to the suburbs is because of the crime issues and the candy wages. |

I had a whopping 3 kids last night at my place in NE Ferndale. Typically, I get around 100 or so kids, with most either been bussed in or groups from the local churches. This year, there were no busses, and a block that was strangely silent and dark. But at least I'll be able to eat my way into diabetes with all the leftover candy... |

Wilus, when I lived in Grosse Pointe there were as many Detroiters and Grosse Pointers trick-or-treating on my street. It was kind of cool seeing an integrated neighborhood activity for one night a year. Of course, some of my neighbors resented the non-GP kids who came w/o costumes and were often well into their teens. Can't blame them. |

In Harper Woods we get lots of minivans where the kids run up to each door and then back to the car. I assume they are from a different neighborhood. We got one lady who had to be 35 years old ! My wife gave her candy anyway, not wanting to ask for id. heh. 17 bags of candy ?????? Holy crap SS, thats a buttload of kids. We had two bags. |

2 kids in 18 years. I think I would have had more, but they were intimidated by the Fortress. We used to hit 300 houses. The apples got thrown against the garage door. Aluminum preferred. Cars? There was no traffic that night, everybody with a brain realized you don't want to be out. |

50 kids on my block in Hamtramck, though I saw many more along Joseph Campau. I was very upset that my neighborhoods didn't pass out candy - it was me and the people across the street from me, that was it! I'm thinking about making a flyer, informing people that it is customary to hand out treats on halloween. Some people had their lights and and werent passing out candy! |

Well we went through 6 large bags of candy...damn that shit is expensive. Has candy alwasy been so expensive? I'd guess $45 for the 6 bags. Then we had to borrow a smaller bag from our neighbor but it went in 60 seconds. Turned the light out at 7:50 I think. I'd say maybe 200? |

In Shelby Township I had about 50 kids. Almost turned the light off at 7, but some more trickled by up until 730-ish. My favorite were a few girls collecting spare change for unicef. They had bags for their own candy, too - but had the money boxes for unicef. In fact, one was wearing a body sized box painted to look like the unicef boxes. cool. What was the predominant container for collection?? Here it was definitely the humble pillow case. Some with lace! |

Pillow cases, plastic pumpkins, plastic bags, and backpacks made up the mix here, none really dominating the mix. I was telling my neighbor last night, I have never seen trick-or-treating on a level that Woodbridge gets. With few exceptions, most kids were plenty young enough to be trick or treating. Sure, you had the occasional teenagers, but thinking back, I went during my teenage years too. Only one or two crackheads this year, which I gave to anyways. I figured why not? EAT CANDY, NOT CRACK! That's what I always say. |

Had around 330 kids come up, and we ran out of candy at 6:50, pretty similar to Quinn/Supersport's experience. This is in Indian Village... I can see why lots of kids come from outside the neighborhood. It's cool though, a chance to connect with the surrounding neighborhoods. Next year I'll try 500 pieces, see how long that lasts. We went with the fun-size candy bars... can't afford full-size candy bars at that volume, but on the other hand you don't want to cheap out and give people lollipops or jolly rangers, that's just not right. |

Checking in from Dearborn...I had 3 kids (but was over at my sister's to see my nephew for his 1st Halloween until about 6:45). I turned my lights on about 7:05 and kept them on until about 11ish. My sis had 10 kids all night in Westland. I, too, am going to eat my way into a diabetic coma with all the leftover candy. I would take it to work but I don't want my students hyper. |

A few years ago, a kid appeared with her mother, very late, saying someone stole all her candy. So I started absent-mindedly shoveling all my leftovers into her bag while talking to her mother until the little girl started complaining, "Stop! That's too much!" I went all out with the motion-detector booby traps and black lights and the mask posted above. One little boy was so excited at the spectacle that he was speechless. All he could say was: "Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!" Another courageous but terrified little girl briefly hesitated, eyes on the candy, but dashed for the loot regardless! She shot, she scored! Halloween's really for the adults. |

Northern edge of Woodbridge--at minimum 350 kids and/or their handlers.Interesting mix across class, race, and age. I had 4 gigantic bags of Costco's "best" kid's mix. All gone in 2 hours, except for the few bags of twizzlers and laffy taffy that I "saved" for myself. My daughters brought back less than I gave out--thank god. Redistribution of the wealth. I also noticed that the Detroit Police were doing the old school flashing of lights while driving slowly down Commonwealth and handing out candy. That brought back a flash back or two from my youth. |

In Rosedale Park my wife and I figured that we had about 350-400 kids. We started at 6:00 and ran out of candy around 7:30. We probably could have handed out candy to another 100-150 kids, but you'd got to cut things off somewhere or you'll spend a fortune on candy. The car traffic was out of control many times through out the night. There were literally traffic jams 2-3 blocks long through out the night. Since there were only about 6-12 house per block (it was an unusually big dud of a year for the kids in Rosedale Park) handing out candy I can understand why families would do this. A kid got hit by a car right in front of my house. He had an all black costume and ran out in front of a car. Luckily the car was moving slowly so he wasn't hurt real bad. I called 911 (luckily it was working by then) and a traffic control cop showed up within 2 minutes (they were all over the neighborhood last night). An ambulance showed up about 6 minutes later but the kid and his family insisted that he was fine even though he was limping. The woman who hit the kid had insurance an gave all her info to the cops and the family of the kid who got hit. I didn't understand why the family of the kid who got hit didn't want to go to the hospital for a check up on the auto insurance companies dime. The cop didn't issue a ticket since the kid ran in front of the driver who was already going quite slow. |

I live in Pontiac and this is my 3rd Halloween here. It will probably be my last handing out candy. Only 5 kids came to the door! Like others stated above, now I have plenty of leftover M&M's. Just not worth it any more. Neighbors across the street always go all-out in decorations yet...they weren't home! Just curious, what are the posted hours for trick-or-treat in your community? We actually left the house and went out to dinner. We use to hand out candy, but the last couple years has been really quiet and just old kids like 20 year olds who should not be trick or treating at that age We took a drive around the subdivision after dinner, which was at 7PM and I have to say, wht a change from when I was small. When I was small lots of the houses had really cool decorations, and everyone handed out candy. This year we noticed most of the houses where totally dark like ours. Seems like most of my subdivision left like we did. Only two or three houses really decorated. I think this is due to my subdivision being old now. Most residents are elderly couples with no kids. We need some new families to enject new life into this hood on Halloween (Message edited by miketoronto on November 01, 2006) |

I passed out candy at my sister's house in Royal Oak while Sis and her hubby took the kids trick or treating. Exactly four kids came to the door. There aren't a lot of kids in the neighborhood, but I know there are more than just those four. The oldest of the four kids was maybe in 1st or 2nd grade; the other three were little ones. I don't know where all the older kids went. When my sister lived in south Warren, there would be hundreds of kids of all ages. Her in-laws in Hazel Park get hundreds of kids, too. Last night they ran out of candy. |

If you are at home you might as well give out candy. While only 5 came there may have been few lights on. Your house added to the enjoyment, if only for 5 kids. We all have our great Halloween memories but it seems like we are letting the fin die at the children's expense. |

I guess driving around on Halloween is a new MOTOWN thing, never was when I was a kid. Where we live now it is heavily frowned upon, it is considered dangerous, with all the frantic kids running around hell bent to fill there sacks. It's a fairly small town, the FD and police block the town from all auto traffic if you can even imagine that, I swear it's true though. |

In Grosse Pointe we had about 250 kids, about half from Detroit. I keep track because I give out glow bracelets and there are 50 to a tube. I bought them last year on ebay 42 bucks for 500 of them. They have lasted for two years and I still have 100 left. Some of the neighbors get pissed that cars pull up and a bunch of kids steam out, grab the treats and get back in the car, but they are just kids who need to have a fond memory of trick or treating. |
