With the Book Cadillac development it has been stated that there will a number of retail spaces, as well as a restaurant. Specifically, I can’t remember which publication it was, but there was talk about an upscale steak joint. With that being said, is this going to be a local place? Or maybe a chain such as Ruth’s Chris’s ect….What are some suggestion that people think would fit well here? I would think this may be a nice location for a Capital Grill. This is a pretty common steak/burger joint that I have been to in a number of cities, specifically DC and Minneapolis that caters to upper scale crowds. This could be the ideal fit. Would anyone else have suggestions over what they would like to see?

Kobe Beef Steak House would be nice. Mmmmm...

Please no cheap chains. Whatever its going to be you can count on it being expensive. Westin hotels and million dollar condo's equal $20 plus entree's.

Ruth's Chris is the worst name for a restaurant EVER. The Troy location is also the worst looking building for a restaurant I have ever seen.

We have a Don Shula Steak House in Troy, and when I was in DC I ate at one that was in a hotel. Thats a possibility. I always thought it would be a Mortons for the book.
Or maybe this http://www.book-cadillac.org/t our/englishroom.html

Ruth's Chris or Morton's would be great.

They should add another restaurant.................... CHEESECAKE FACTORY :-) (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Ps to Lowell: Love the spell check function (Funny, it caught me on spell check; I had it as one word)

Starwood doesn't like to operate the restaurants in their hotels - they just want to do catering, lobby bars and room service, so I'm sure it will be outsourced.

But probably not a chain restaurant. If it is a chain, it will most likely be something like Mortons or Ruth Chris.

"Guests and visitors can enjoy a nationally–known steakhouse, sports bar, coffee franchise and high–end retail, all with convenient access from the hotel lobby and street." - Ferchill website

We are only speculating on the "nationally-known steakhouse"

I'm still waiting for the word from the Gerbers for a new Stone Rose Detroit. They cancelled the contract with Starwood 9 months ago, but only on selected properties.

I was on a walk-thru at the Book with developer John Ferchill. He specifically mentioned Morton's as the kind of steakhouse he's like to see in there.

One thing that I've noticed is that there is a different set of restaurants slated to operate in the B-C, depending on the quoted source. Most indicate a steak house and a Starbucks (or generic "coffee franchise"). But as for the second restaurant, I have heard either seafood restaurant or sports bar. I wonder which it will be.

Ferchill's site says sports bar:
http://www.ferchillgroup.com/b ookcadillac2.shtml

Yesterday's Free Press Article says upscale seafood:
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=2006611080306

Perhaps we can hope for both, for a total of three restaurants?

Ponderosa mmmmmmm What about Applebees or TGI Fridays or even outback steakhouse. These are all popular around hotels now for some reason or even a Dennys. Now I'm really getting hungry!!

Chains are not going to attract people downtown. Why would you travel all the way downtown to go to a chain when you can go to your local mall or down the street from your suburban home? Royal Oak became popular because it has unique dining destinations like Mongolian, Monterey, Beruit palace, Memphis smoke, etc.

If it's a seafood restaurant, I wouldn't be surprised if Southern Hospitality Group would get it. He was quoted before wanting to open a moderate to high end seafood restaurant.

Even though it was meant as a joke, people do need places to eat both lunch and dinner.
Of course Morton's and the other places are fine high end dinning, there is a place for low to mid end places too.
When the chain restaurant's start popping up, it will be a sign that downtown is vibrant. They work on volume.

With very few exceptions (mostly where the restaurant has been in the hotel for decades and has a following) hotels are not interested in drawing people in for their restaurants anymore. They just want a nice place for their guests to eat.

They're not going to bar the door to people coming in, and they want a place that reflects well on the facility, but the days of truly fine dining in hotels is over. That's too bad, in my opinion, but that's what happens when the bean counters take over.

Part of the blame should be on the American public, who by and large would rather go to something bland and known like Cheesecake Factory or Applebees than try something different.

Psip I certainly agree. If there are chain Restaurants in the city that does mean that the city is on the up swing. I also agree that not every restaurant in Detroit should be upscale and not a chain restaurant. I think that Hotels should have a middle of the road restaurant that is not a chain for two reasons that I have heard on here before. One is so everyone can afford it. Not to expensive but still maybe a step up from the norm. Also I agree with the fact that hotels do not need a chain restaurant since the guest most likely has that same place in their city.

I would prefer to see a regional chain because it adds local flavor AND those companies tend to treat their employees better (which makes for better service and better food)

It will have to be an upscale chain, because Westin is Starwood's upscale brand. When you are charing 200-300 bucks a night you aren't going to have an Applebees in the Lobby. I'm actually kind of suprised they'd have a Starbucks, because those are getting so omnipresent.

Call me old-fashioned, but I liked it better when there was a Chef de Cuisine, who oversaw the whole operation (catering, Dining Room, Room Service and "Coffee Shop") and took proprietary pride in his kitchen and his restaurants. Westin, prior to the Starwood acquisition, used to be one of the lead proponents of that tradition, but that's a dying breed now. You only see it at the really high-end houses (Four Seaons/Ritz-Carlton/Fairmont, etc)

While you can, in all probablility, never go back to the days where places like the Book-Cadillac operated five or six restaurants, you can still have excellence of a sort. The big chains aren't interested - but they still want those five-star room rates.

True, but we need to have "good" restaurants where the food and the service is "great". People will pay for good food and service. I hate restaurants that give you the all the ambience but the food is not palatable or fulfilling.

Personally, I think they need to create a destination restaurant; something that will draw people in from the suburbs. If you put a restaurant in that is already in Troy, Southfield, Rochester ect….what is the incentive for people to come downtown to the restaurant. Another Kraus and Mauers is nice, but not going to cut the muster…..Something unique is needed to keep this thing afloat and bring new people into the city; which is what we need.

Yeah nothing says Detroit like a place called the LONDON Chop House. Yeah I know it was a popular restaurant for years but I am just amused by the irony of that statement.

"To the grammar police I know irony isn't the correct term to use here but for the life on me right now I can't think of the correct term"

How about Sullivan's? Been to a few on the East Coast and in Chicago. Like it better than Ruth's Chris, Cap Grill or Morton's.

Whatever the choice, there needs to be a destination restaurant downtown that out of towners can recognize. Somewhere they can get a great meal without having to rely on someone to tell them where the best local Detroit place is.

Ferchill could kill two birds with one stone by installing Cameron's Steakhouse and Mitchell's Fish Market on the premises. Both are operated by the same company (Columbus Ohio-based Cameron Mitchell Restaurants) and already have Michigan experience with their outlets in Birmingham (both venues) and Livonia and Rochester Hills (just the Fish Market). The Fish Market is very good. Have not been to the steakhouse. Perhaps this was Ferchill's plan all along - since he focused on these two restaurant types? An easy "fit," but not necessarily the best choice for the Book Cadillac. As for the sports bar - Lindell's, of course.

Ruth's Chris and McCormick & Schmick's.

Haven't eaten at the former, but eat often at the latter and have always had a great meal.
