Much like DTE Energy Center will always be Pine Knob to many, I can't imagine this new name of the Tastefest taking off any time soon.

DETROIT, November 9, 2006 – New Center Council, Inc. announced today that the name of its acclaimed, all-ages, Fourth of July weekend street festival has been changed from “Comerica TasteFest” to “Comerica CityFest.” The 2007 event will be held from July 4th to July 8th. Save the week.

Founded in 1989, the annual food, music and cultural event held in Detroit’s historic New Center neighborhood as a fundraiser for New Center Council, has become more than a “taste” event, evolving into a locally and nationally recognized cultural experience. With its eclectic mix of restaurants, well-known local and national musical acts, independent merchants, local artists, children’s activities, extreme sports and social gathering spots, the Comerica CityFest is today a celebration of city life, especially what it could be, in this emerging Detroit neighborhood.

“The new name better reflects what the event has become,” said Michael Solaka, President, New Center Council. “The name CityFest better represents the feeling you get when you are here. It covers a lot of ground, but it’s the quickest and best way to describe it.”

And while great food is still a major component, Comerica CityFest presents a slice of diversity and activity not often seen in metropolitan Detroit. The five-day party on West Grand Boulevard, in the heart of the summer, unites people from all backgrounds through food, music and shopping at Detroit’s perennial “taste-making” event.

Comerica CityFest is more than just a regional cultural event; it is a marketing vehicle for New Center Council, whose mission is to create a rich urban experience for all residents, visitors and employees in their historic neighborhood. “The festival is our annual brochure to the world,” said Solaka “We use it to promote New Center, so it has to give festival goers a taste of how vibrant this district could be year-round.”

“Renaming the festival was motivated by several factors including the growth of the event, its expanding scope of activities and attractions, and most importantly, the public’s overwhelming support for it,” said Jerry Burgess, chairman, New Center Council. “And for once, it’s just great to have change brought about due to positive influences.”

“As Detroit’s hometown bank, we welcome the name change which just further emphasizes Comerica’s longstanding partnership with our city and the metropolitan Detroit region”, said Connie Beck, Executive Vice President, Retail Bank. “The Comerica CityFest will remain Detroit’s premiere summer festival for the entire family and Comerica is proud to be the lead sponsor.”

In recent years, the Comerica CityFest has earned many accolades, local, national and international media attention and the growing reputation of being Metro Detroit’s premier summer event.

Each year more than 500,000 visitors fill the streets for five action-packed days at the Comerica CityFest, held adjacent to the historic Fisher Building on West Grand Boulevard between Woodward Avenue and the Lodge Freeway. Admission is free, including all concerts.

Comerica CityFest is produced by New Center Council, Inc., which uses the proceeds to support its charitable activities including an award-winning summer youth program, economic development, and the yearly maintenance of the New Center's outdoor public spaces.

Why should I? If I didn't point it out how would SouthOfEight learn?

It was just a friendly recommendation.

If Ndavies hadn't pointed out the previous link, others certainly would have, and not as nicely.
