CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands: John deJongh will be the next U.S. Virgin Islands governor, winning a runoff election Tuesday after falling two votes short of outright victory in the Nov. 7 general election. DeJongh, a Democrat who is a financial adviser to Caribbean governments and businesses, got 16,644 votes, while independent candidate and government consultant Kenneth Mapp received 12,402 votes, said Lorna Thomas, a Board of Elections member. The margin means the 1,304 yet-uncounted absentee ballots cannot change the result. "I think we came away with a very strong mandate," said deJongh, who has pledged to reduce crime, create jobs and improve education in the three-island U.S. territory of about 110,000 residents. After the count of absentee ballots from the Nov. 7 election was completed late Nov. 17, deJongh was two votes short of the 50 percent needed to claim victory over Mapp and Adlah Donastorg, a nine-term senator in the U.S. Virgin Islands legislature who ran as an independent. The runoff was between the top two vote-getters. DeJongh replaces Gov. Charles Turnbull, a Democrat who leaves office in January after serving the maximum of two. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap /2006/11/22/news/CB_POL_Virgin _Islands_Governors_Race.php |

I don't see anything in the article that says he is from Detroit. What's the story? I did know a DeJongh who lived in Indian Village in the 70's but this would have to be a son if it was from that family. |
