This might be the closes Jjaba trivia response ever. Three correct responses in the course a minute and just 4 minutes after the original post. Looks like Lowell will have to look at the DetroitYES atomic clock to determine how far apart these responses were. Will Jjaba have to provide 3 sets of tickets to the next Original Six match-up at the Joe for the three winners? Maybe he'll offer up a private suite instead. Inquiring minds want to know what the mystery man will do! |

Who did the canadians play against until 1917? I mean acording to kova they started in 1909, did they just practice for 8 years? What ever happened to the California Golden Seals? I know the North Stars are now the Dallas Stars. |

The Original Six is the term used by fans of ice hockey to refer to the six teams that made up the National Hockey League from the 1942-43 season through to before the league's expansion in 1967. They are: Montreal Canadiens (1909, charter member of NHL in 1917) Toronto Maple Leafs (charter member in 1917) Boston Bruins (1924) Detroit Red Wings (1926) Chicago Blackhawks (1926) New York Rangers (1926) The term is a misnomer; as shown above, only the two Canadian teams were charter members of the NHL, and three other expansion teams (the Montreal Maroons, the New York Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates) were all likewise added to the league after its foundation. The Boston Bruins were the first American franchise, and the other three American teams joined the league in an earlier expansion that enlarged the league to ten teams, its maximum size before 1967. But all six of them do date from the league's first decade, and the six teams formed the entire league for 25 years after such franchises as the Maroons, Americans, and the original Ottawa Senators were bankrupted by the Great Depression. After World War II, the NHL owners consistently rejected any bids for expansion, and in the eyes of many observers changed the criteria for entry every time with a bent to defeating any such bid. They also reneged on promises to allow the still-extant Maroons and Americans to rejoin the league. The small league that was left meant that the number of players at the NHL level was also small, resulting in a very high quality of play. There was none of the dilution of talent seen in the NHL in the later "expansion era". The same teams would play each other up to 14 times each season; rivalries would develop, and it was easy for fans to become familiar with all of the players. The league at times played to arenas filled to 95% capacity. |

Some of these responses are classics and jjaba laughed a lot with you. This is a good thread. At 8:26 pm, Nov. 27, exactly four minutes after jjaba posted his contest, we got 3 correct answers. It is possible that their posts were technically at the same time, stacked and waiting for processing in cyberlowellspace. Thus, 3 winners are Testua, Kova, and Bussey. Best laughers were the original six Faygos and the original six stooges, funny but no cigars. Bushay came in on Nov. 30 with complex explanations far and away with research so he is awarded a 4th prize. So jjaba declares 4 winners, equal in prizes. Each person named as a winner please post your email address on this thread and jjaba will contact you. jjaba, Red Wings Fan on the electric Grand River buses. |

I have been asked by jjaba to review the contest and rather than take the matter under advisement, I am prepared to rule NOW. I find the contest well "above board" ( hardly a piece of choice legalese),, objective, and fairly administered. The naming of 4 winners manifests a bona fide effort from the contest's author to be fair to all concerned parties. The "Original 6" must be narrowly construed. Original means original. And the Original Six actually refers to the 6 wives of Henry Vlll who were around well before the sport called hockey and any of the teams heretofore mentioned. So, jjaba, I look foreward to my prize, too. |

With friends like The Rock, who needs enemies? Thanks Rock for your half-way twisted help. You were a damn judge, not a contestant. Had you named the Original Six wives of Henry VIII, an award might be possible. If jjaba had Catmandude's money, $10,000 would be no problem. jjaba prizes are tasteful, within his pensioner's budget. Expect more like Chanukkah gelt, a few bupkas. Tis the thought from jjaba that counts. jjaba, Westside Bar Mitzvah Bukkor. |

The original 6 HAD to include Detroit (according to Jjaba's rules)... Let's see the farthest back one can go would be the 17th and 18th century.... So the first 6 French settlements of the American interior were... Sault St. Marie 1668 St. Joseph 1679 St. Ignace 1688 D'Etroit 1701 Duquesne 1712 Michilimackinac 1715 |

Thanks Psip! It's kinda funny... one would think that the areas around Lakes Erie and Ontario would have older settlements that the upper Great Lakes. But due to the fierce Iroquois Nation that lived around those 2 lakes (that even the Indian friendly French had serious troubles with), the earliest French settlements were via a route thru Canada from the Ottawa River with portage over to Sault St. Marie, and then into the upper Great Lakes. |

Unforgettable day? Try touring the Ford assembly plant with him when the plant is down and its so quiet you could hear a pin ( or a wrench )drop. Now that, Ray ,is an unforgettable day. Neither a ride on the Dexter bus with a free admission to the Oriole Theatre nor a Singapore Sling ( 3 umbrellas) at Trader Vic's would have cheered him up after that experience. Every time I hear my Capitol (33 1/3) recording of "Unforgettable" ( Nat King Cole), I think of our West side friend and our ill-fated trip to see the 150's built. |

Toured the Rouge back about 1968 or so; was a memorable visit. Made me swear to myself I'd never work on an assembly line. Never rode the Dexter bus, Rock. The Schoolcraft line had it all for me back then; all the way into Highland Park. Schoolcraft ended at Ewald Circle, and I often wondered why they didn't call it the "Highland Park" bus from there...... |

Back in jjaba days, the Schoolcraft bus gave way to the Oakman Street Car at the East end of Schoolcraft.Maybe Ray1936 remembers those days. The Rock does remember jjaba's ill-fated tour to The new Rouge 150 truck line tour, which wasn't making trucks that day. jjaba used some of his wiseguy Westside street saavy and got refunds for our entire party. There is a basic rule when taking an industrial tour; they gotta be making something. jjaba wants a hard hat, safety shoes, goggles, and walk the shop floor. He had some dandys recently in Youngstown, Ohio. Even in those ruins. some shops were running and showed us a good time. jjaba, Old Newsboy. |

"refunds for the entire party"? I didn't get any refund. Didn't even apply for one as Ford stock was not doing well and I did not want to upset the apple cart. So if jjaba got a refund for the "entire party", then he's holding our money, Lowell and the least he could do is buy us a drink at Trader Vic's. Not sure I am ready ready to try a Roc-a Coe from Jam's bartender guide book, but if that does not work out, we can wander across the street to the Tuller hotel and have a pint of ale. Ah, memories---takes my mind off the BCS final standings. |

The Rock is in the Rose Bowl and is already buying his gear. M Go Blue. Since only Grosse Pointers would mope about Ford stock, jjaba pushed for refunds. Rock noted that we did get into The Henry Ford (Museum) and thus should get no refund. Now he shows compassion for the worst managed car company since Henry Ford hisbadse'f ran the sonofabitch. Rock, get your thermal socks on, it's cold outside. You can wear socks after Labor Day, remember. Boating season is over. Short and sweet... "The original six"....wish I had seen this one at "post time"....C'mon now...Atlas, Goebel and anything else....Bushay ...nice history. Why is this professional sport so difficult for the American public/tv to "run with"? Dilution of talent ...yes. Damn, still a thrill to spectator at the game and steps above "the shot from the ruff", "and no one is going to catch him 99 1/2 yard kickoff return", "from downtown", "at the warning track", "game, set, match", "white flag lap". I don't follow soccer, poker championships, rodeo, boxing is a mess, bowling (I used to), pool (to each his own), "ultimate fighting/wrestling/I think you catch the drift". Minute by minute.......Best bang for the buck for the action...The ORIGINAL SIX... great rivalries then...Now?....Crap Shoot. Bring back the Rolls-Royce to the THUNDERBOATS |

jjaba's post of Dec. 6 regarding the 24 hour ultimatum seems fair and reasonable. He's the director, he's the originator, he's the executioner, and has the final say. Beyond that you act at your own peril. |

one slight correction to Bushay's post. the original six started in 1926 not 1942-43. the previous teams before that were the original 10 and prior to that they original 8. the original six is what most folk consider the beginning of the most current iteration of the NHL... what team became the Quebec Nordiques? or the New Jersey Devils? or the Calgary Flames? david |

Bussey can now throw away his religious gear. Glad you liked it. When the others receive their awards, please let jjaba know via this thread. Since The Rock gave consultation, usual and customary fees were given, an award similar to the others. Always keep your mouthpiece happy, eh. jjaba, Westside trivia captain. |

At a GP cocktail party last night, Bill Ford and his cousin Edsel cornered me and asked "where did you get those spiffy socks?" I just smiled, and told them to go see Tom Hanks in "Polar Express", and to remember its theme: "You gotta believe". |

Mpow, great Original Six. They sure as hell were there before hockey, the Fords, and The Rock. Since the contest is over, we can entertain the most "Original" Original Six. Glad The Rock's socks rock. Ain't no schlock. I once met Billy Ford at The Rouge tour. I said, you the man, Billy. He chortled and replied, how can I be the man when The Rock's the man! Then in a bar, I called the Grosse Pointe Mayor the man. As he threw back a double shot o' aged Scotch, he says that was nice but The Rock IS the man in GP. jjaba. (who know the man.) |

The Rock bought his socks at Hardy Herpolsheimer's? I thought they were only in Muskegon and GR, not GP..... |

Grosse Pointe has it all. Detroitrulez, Ann Arbor is not a suburb. The Rock can tell you that. He drives for hrs. to get there on game day. M Go Blue. jjaba. ps. There's nothing worse than a GPer with no socks downtown wearing tassled dress shoes. |
