Great pic!

This (and other skyline shots from around that time) remind me of how civic center developments and then the RenCen construction shifted the core of downtown away from Campus Martius and towards the River. Part of this shift was an increase in auto-centricity, with the Lodge, Jefferson being widened, and 375.

Compared to a downtown Detroit City Block, how long is this ship?

My 1963 (60th Edition) copy of Great Lakes Red Book ( the official guide back then) shows the STERLING at 730 foot keel length-75 foot beam--39 foot depth. She had 24 hatches.
F. J. Riedy was her Captain and John M. Doyle was her first engineer.

So do I get a prize?

Great picture. Thanks for posting it, Andrew.

The pic reminded me that our local paper (Wenatchee [WA] World) ran a Chicago Tribune story about the 40th anniversery of the sinking of the Daniel J. Morrell off Grindstone City Nov. 29, 1966. The article features Dennis J. Hale (66, Rock Creek, Ohio), the only survivor of the wreck that killed 28.

Mr. W.A. Sterling, for whom the vessel was named, was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Engineering (1916),and later became president of the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Company. He was born in the Upper Peninsula.

If that is 1962, then One Woodward is brand new and probably not occupied (I think that happened in late 1962 and early 1963).

The current Captain on this freighter is a great guy. He is very friendly to everyone he passes.
