Thanks, Cheddar Bob. This year, we've renamed the picnic the "Jeff Colby Memorial Picnic." Jeff started the forum picnics and really loved throwing 'em. For Jeff, the picnics were a way to bring people together who might not otherwise ever meet. Before his early departure, Jeff had connected with many, not only on Detroityes, but several other online forums. He reached out to everyone... even if you were a little bit weird ;-) We'd like to honor Jeff and celebrate what he was about: the city, irreverent humor and above all, friendship. All are welcome, hope you can make it! |

What I find galling is that several of the event organizers were actually banned from this forum and posted with Jeff elsewhere, and yet this event still was completely co-opted by the DYes forum. How about revamping that logo, Lowell? I think it would be the appropriate thing to do. Unless maybe the DYes Forum Picnic is a different event held simultaneously and adjacent to the Jeff Colby Memorial Picnic? I might be misunderstanding the whole thing. |

You are sadly misunderstanding the whole thing, especially in regards to who organized the past events, provided the food, grill, beer, and other things. As well as who exactly attended past events, and who was responsible for it being an "invite only" picnic last year. |

What I am NOT misunderstanding is WHY it was an "invite only" picnic last year, that's for damn sure. I am also not misunderstanding the word "past." It's great you jumped on FSC and kept that going, but to the best of my knowledge you are not in any way involved in the planning of this event, so why you being so snatchy? |

Because some people apparently have a serious issue with the fact that it WAS and still IS a DetroitYes picnic. Now it is also in memory of a fellow friend, a friend that most all of us knew from DetroitYes. Everybody who attended the picnics in years prior were from DetroitYes. The only reason anybody knew one another was because of DetroitYes. So let's give credit where credit is due. You are correct, I am not part of the planning. I offered some of the organizers to help, but they said all the key things were well in hand. I had to miss last year's event because of a wedding, though had made the two previous picnics. It's a great event in which many new people come from all over to meet. I was even told by one of the key people involved that they hoped that so much focus wasn't placed on it being a "Jeff Colby Memorial Picnic" that only people who knew Jeff would come. Jeff told me that the reason he loved the picnics so much was that so many new people came out, people he had never met. He told during the first picnic he organized that the out of pocket expense meant little in regards to what he got back. That prior to discovering DetroitYes, his circle of friends was much smaller. That because of the site and people he had met, these past few years had been the happiest years of his life. He was also upset that last year was a secret picnic and vowed that it would not happen again. So call the picnic whatever you want, people he need to pat themselves on their backs can go ahead. This picnic should be more than simply a memorial for those who knew him. It should be an event that draws in new people, to hopefully carry on that same tradition of friendship that Jeff enjoyed. |

All this sniping at one another over this year's picnic and what occurred in the past is seriously hurtful. Please cut it out!! Call the picnic what you want...whether the DetroitYES Forum Picnic or the Jeff Colby Memorial Picnic. I liken it to having a section of a well-known road in honor of a beloved figure...like the Jeffries Freeway having a stretch honoring Rosa Parks. And as such, you call it what you call it. So, if you want to get together with other DetroitYES forumers and friends and family of Jeff and enjoy some BBQ and brew or whatever, then come to the picnic. If you don't, then stay away. There's no reason for all this mudslinging. Let's just get together and have a good time!!! |

The intention wasn't mudslinging, and frankly I thought I was just having a discussion. I was under the impression that this year's picnic was intended to be a "big tent" event and extend beyond the scope of DetroitYes. It's true that in the past this forum was a connecting thread, but the online world has evolved and that isn't really the case anymore. (PS - Sport: I think you meant to use the word "regretted" instead of "was upset") (Message edited by dialh4hipster on April 14, 2007) |

Regretted is what I should have said, didn't mean to mudsling, just hate to hear when people choose to overlook an event's origins. Truthfully, the event will hopefully evolve into something bigger this year. Perhaps The O.D.U. Picnic is a good name, Online Dorks Unite? It covers all the bases that way. Everyone- My friend, Jeff, died last February. I really miss him. Life just isn't the same without that friendly face greeting me at every party, sending me hysterical emails, telling me my wedding plans are too "hillbilly." :-) It seems like you don't really realize how important someone is, how much of an impact a person has on your life, until they are gone. Like I said, I really miss Jeff and his death has left quite the void, not only in my life, but in many of his friends' lives and especially his family's life. This picnic is not about the internet. This picnic is being thrown by Jeff's closest friends to honor him. Jeff loved to throw a picnic every year for all of the people he knew and liked in real life and online. It is important for us to keep the tradition alive for our friend and name it after the person who we miss dearly. I trust that you all can respect what we are trying to do for our friend, who we think about daily with a heavy heart. Thanks, Julie |

I had overlooked Velma's post until now, but I think her idea of calling this year's picnic the "Jeff Colby Memorial Picnic" for our mutual friend is an excellent idea. I have changed https://www.detroityes.com/news/070 412/601pics/301.htm to reflect and state that, in addition to the mention of his memory I had already placed on that page and whose tributes I have profiled on this website and forum. Any mention I made of the picnic name was based on the title of this thread and what it was called in the past; it is not a name I created. I have never taken a role in organizing this event, except only to facilitate the efforts and hard work of others through this forum, just as I am happily facilitating the fund raising for his memorial, on the request of his family and others. I just show up at the picnic with a 12 pack and have fun. I'm sorry if I offended anyone in anyway, it was not meant to be so, as I greatly appreciate ItsJeff and all he did to bring us together. I hope his spirit will prevail and that all who loved and respected him [Canadians in particular and newcomer alike and all whether you had the priviledge of knowing Jeff or not] will show up, have fun and laugh. Just like he always did and, I think, will do in spirit this year. |

Ditto, Julie. I stumbled across the Freep obit yesterday while cleaning up my loft (finally)...sat down and read through my printout of the thread in his honor...and realized it has ONLY been two months. I cried again. Haven't done much these past few months, still cannot understand why I am so levelled by his leaving. I cry NOW for those who keep tripping each other up with their negative attitudes. Please, let's just let it go. I am troubled with those who seem to want to close ranks and exclude people (along with all the underlying hatred)...exactly the opposite of how I perceived our dear departed Jeffrey. I know I am not alone here...he was a jewel at least in part of how he accepted each and every one of us. Whatever, this picnic IS important, but much MORESO when we let Itsjeff's personality shine on each of our faces, as much as we are able. Cheers, sincerely, to all. Much love. |

Hey kids this is turning into an episode of Jerry Springer! Back to your seats now or Steve comes out. Save this all for the picnic and you can sort this out in a grudge match in the mud pit, further snarky comments will be taken as signing up. How about we rename this event THE PICNIC in honor of Jeff Colby who I met at/on/through { location/internet site/dark alley/person}. So yes I will be attending The Picnic in honor of Jeff Colby who I met at Cafe Detroit. My nameless partner in mischief will be attending The Picnic in honor of Jeff Colby who she met through Urban Tiki in a dark alley. |

I am disappointed that I will not be able to attend this year. I do appreciate the work and planning that Velma, Kathleen, and Jmy have put into bringing this together. I know that when I attended my first picnic a few years back, Jeff was the first person to say hello and introduce himself to me. He watched my son as I grabbed a beer -- and poured the foundation for a friendship that meant much to my wife and I over the ensuing years. I know that regardless of what one calls it, the memory of Jeff will best be celebrated by people getting together and spreading a sense of community. Sharing in the commonalities that we all have because of the [sometime morbid] love and fascination that we have for this city, and our fellow citizens. Thank you Lowell for making the change, it is appreciated. |

Thank you!!! |

Friends: We are SO there! ...but my friends are no longer coming. so you guys just get me and my Jello shots instead (yep, that was me, Valkyrias). and maybe a nice bottle of 1800. bummer, huh? ;P |

Oh yeah, as if, Superaygun. It is always tough sharing space with just you. Heh. 1800, huh?! Gonna be another one of those... Heya, Super, if you have an iPod or MP3 player, please bring it loaded and charged! I'll have a connection to the boombox. Anyone else, do the same, or NO complaining about the music!! I'll have a few CDs, mostly Detroit artists. Cheers! |

For each complaint, you must do a jello shot. Two if you're screaming. Three if you start smiling about it. |

I wish I could be there this year. I have wanted to come for the last couple years, but Memorial day weekend never seems to workout. I hope the weather is great, and you all have a great time. P.S. I noticed on international metropolis, AIW used one of ItsJeff’s drawings, does anyone have any more of those? I remember the original thread with those drawings made me laugh so hard I cried. I don't recall the exact context, but the discussion plus those drawing was hilarious. |

You missed the most friendly day of the year...this will have to suffice. I'm not ready for another funeral so soon. Could'ja lend a vice or two to Pamela? She's fresh out. |

Vices must be creative and unusual before they're really worthwhile. Anyone can get drunk. How about a habit of getting small woodland creatures drunk? Don't ask me how the thing might be accomplished. I'm sure Pamela's of the creative sort. She'll find a way. Anyway, I wouldn't miss the event for the world. As I posted on the International Metropolis listing, I'm planning to bring Fruit Salad and perhaps some bulk products - nuts and dried fruit. I do have a couple of questions... 1. Could anyone suggest to me a good bulk store in the Detroit area? 2. Weird question, but could I get a couple of people to bring nutcrackers? I'm thinking of bringing a quantity of Walnuts, Pecans, ect, but I won't have a nutcracker with me in Michigan, so I'd need at least two people to tell me they can supply the two-handled thingies before I'd go ahead and acquire nuts. 3. Anyone interested in a game of Risk? Diplomacy? Diplomacy's better, but it can get to be time-consuming. Benjamin A. Vazquez, U.E. |

For bulk food items why don't you go to one of the places in Eastern Market? |
