Im so glad you made this thread dodger. Im only half way through the series using Netflix, I hope I dont get a spoiler. Fav scene. Recently when Omar stopped to light up a Newport in his morning robe after looking for Honeynut Cherrios at the local bodega. And a "package" drops from the sky at his feet assuming that stash house was being robbed by him. The Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck murder investigation scene with The Bunk was also a classic. Theres sooooo so many. I hope you all will announce a spoiler alert. Im waiting on the next two discs in the mail for Tuesday. Like I said on another thread, Im dying to know where that fancy ring takes us all, the ring that Marlo took off O face, the store owner who set up Omar for murder. A mans gotta have a code. So many good lines. Like you said lodger Do Tell. |

I was familiar with the written work of the "brains" behind the series, and so my few encounters were disappointing as I realized that the program was a diluted version of damn-good published material. Read Clockers and read Homicide and in a few evenings you'll have more than just the essence of the series. To wit: lit trumps the small screen, again. |

There are websites available that have the episodes online. I told one of the kids from work about the program. He started to watch them online. Of course, he couldn't stop until he'd viewed them all. I'll check to find the site. |

Ive downloaded movies to my puter but I cant figure out how to play them. It always just plays the sound of the movie. I just use Netflix and LOVE it. If I send in a move on Monday I have one in my mailbox on Wednesday. Azureus Vuze in combination with Mini Nova gives me all my music. I get movies and programs also. Im just not savvy enough to play a movie. |

OH OH OH, got it. yes we've laughed at that already. fuckity fuck, LMAO. Craig, you mentioned Clockers, I saw a movie with Harvey Keitel as a detective in a similar type movie. Must be the same writer. I know The Wire started because of a short series called The Corner. Ill have to look up the author. I think it was a detective turned author. Someone else on another thread mentioned how much The Wire has in common with Detroit. I couldn't agree more. |

The flick you mention was based on the book. I say again that the book smoked the movie, and you'll recognize characters & situations from the series after reading this & David Simon's Homicide. |

The best moments were Stringer trying to run his meetings of street thugs according to Robert's Rules of Order. Classic. Nothing like parliamentary procedure punctuated by "fuck" and "MFer" every three words. I think String may have been my favorite character, right up there with Omar. Also liked the Bunk. Miss 'em all, actually. Would've loved to have seen two or three more seasons. Evidently the producers had sketched out a sixth season, this time focusing on Baltimore's Hispanic community, and the head of HBO (a huge fan of the show despite the miniscule ratings) had given the green light for production. But none of the show's creative team had a real "feel" for the subject, so they decided to fold the tent. I still don't know why they just couldn't have brought in a team of researchers/writers familiar with the Hispanic community to put together the scripts and let Simon finesse the storyline. |

quote:Craig. I swear I heard The Corner and The Wire were based on a cops experiences. You heard right, but the writers are writers, recasting the stories of cops. David Simon's "Homicide" is subtitled with something like "a year on the killing streets..." He was embedded with Baltimore PD Homicide cops. In an interview with Terri Gross he said that one of the cop buddies that he made while doing the research for that book retired and is now a collaborator. So the police are "in there" but I doubt that they're holding a pen or putting fingers on the keyboard. Aside: Joseph Waumbaugh's "Choir Boys" is a cop writing about cops. The overall story isn't so hot, but the characters and situations sound familiar and are funny and poignant. |

re: Waumbaugh - for years he was a one-trick pony... Rosco Rules = Big Czech = etc... I highly, highly recommend "The Secrets of Harry Bright." A different sort of story, and the right mix of odd-ball characters, real people, cop stories, and a mystery. Waumbaugh today? Seems to have just faded away... |

SPOILER ALERT for anyone who hasn't finished the 4th season. I just finished the last discs of season four. Throughout the beginning montage of every episode of season 4 they would flash to the Philips screw head holding the "tombs" shut (the wood boards on the vacant buildings holding bodies)and I kept thinking, Thats a screwhead not a nailhead put in by that beautiful $600 Hilti gun that Snoop loves so much. Then finally on second to the last disc they made it all come together. I love all the little gems they give ya in advance to try and figure out. I thought for sure it was going to be a fuck up on the writers/directors part, I should have known better. Also dyin to know what that little wave to the car drivin by ponytails new digs at the ex cops was all about in the last moment of season four. Certainly wonderin if his jailed Pop WeBay is not into that somehow, even playin that greedy bitch of a so called mother. Beautiful work all around. Poor Bodie. Poor Bubbs, and that dickhead Herc cant stop fuckin lives up. Thank the Lord my life is so simple. Too bad for Gannon he doesnt like "fiction" I gotta run out now and drop these netflix discs in the mail tonite so Ill get half of season 5 by Wed. |

Season Four was also excellent. I say that every year, but they seem to improve it every year. The episode where Michael's step-father is killed was brutal. They way they kicked him to death was chilling. |

Crap. I just finished the 5th season and I have nothing to look forward to now. I cant believe they killed off Omar. I was thinking he was gonna get over on Marlo and be GIVEN the crown by the coop. I have no idea if another season is in the making or not..Anyone,, anyone? I just started watching the commentary by the directors on the dvd. It was weird hearing McNaulty in his British born accent. I had no idea. What a show. |

I don't think they did revisit the Deputy in the gay bar. Hubby and I mentioned that after the show ended. Perhaps they wanted to touch on it more, but decided to drop the story line. We were surprised the first time we heard "McNulty" speak with a British accent. The Mayor, he has, I think, an Irish accent. Don't dispair, Django...you can always rent them again. Interesting story, I was lost a couple of weeks ago. I found myself on this side street with a bunch of young ones hanging around. I almost started looking for Bodie. Now, as far as Omar's death, I think they intentionally made is matter-of-fact. Kind of a "yeah, he was cool...but life goes on and someone else will come along". That someone was Michael. I hope those folks do another series. Btw, Django, what the heck is a martini couch? |

I work at the Dally in the Alley every year doing the setup and take down. During the Dally Im free and usually bring a couch down and set up in a friends garage, in the shade next to the beer garage in a perfect little spot to people watch. I make martinis for my friends. If I can, I prepare blue cheese stuffed olives. Its always a good time and of course everyone here is invited to swing by. You cant leave the couch with the martini though as the only reason Im allowed to do this is Im technically on private property while in the garage. Your not supposed to be at the Dally with booze other than that being sold at the Dally. BTW Im looking for a disposable couch no one wants for this purpose. A love seat wont do. Needs to be a three seater. If anyone knows of one that needs to be hauled away let me know. Sounds like fun dodger, Wire nite that is. Ive ordered The Corner for Wed. I havnt seen all of them yet. |

At the very end of the 5th season, Marlo is released from jail, goes to a business meeting with his millions with intent to become legit. He leaves the meeting, goes to the street and starts a beef with some corner boys where he quickly proves his prowess by running them off while only getting a small cut from a knife. He stands on the corner after the incident basking in the limelight of a streetlamp seemingly knowing that thats where he belongs, on the street, not in an office doing legal business with a bunch of rich folks. When I listened to the commentary by the writer directors he mentioned that scene was much like a page out of a Dostoevsky novel. Anyone know which one that would be? Ive never read Dostoevesky but always wanted to give him a try. Anyone,,,anyone? |

I loved the Corner! Although the book was better that the filmed version. Come to think of it, I need to find that book and read it again. Khandi Alexander from CSI is in the movie version and she's really good in it. Now this thread has made me anxious to watch The Wire. I don't have HBO so I've never seen a single episode but I've been intrigued for awhile. Besides, I am a huge fan of the author George Pelecanos. Has anybody here read any of his books? If not, I highly recommend you check him out. He is one of the producers of The Wire and his writing is very compelling. One of my favorite authors. I'll stop by Blockbuster today and see if they have it. By the way, django - there isn't going to be any more episodes of The Wire. I've read that the creator has said that he's done, he has told the story he wished to tell and finished his vision. |
