Question for all the teachers out there- is there a big demand for Spanish ESL/bilingual or Spanish language teachers in metro Detroit?

My fiancee is a Mexican citizen and we are considering settling in metro Detroit. She is considering becoming a public school teacher in the area.

Is there special training required? Are ESL teachers paid extra?

Thanks for the insight.

Hi Crawford! There is a bit of demand, especially in charter schools and near/in SW Detroit. There are a few bilingual schools there, so she might want to check the classifieds in the Detroit News/Free Press.

Does she have a degree in education? She could get her teaching certificate at Wayne State while maybe working at one of the charter schools. There's always substitute teaching, they told me they always have lots of demand for bilingual subs. And there's always tutoring (check out wyzant.com or craigslist.org.) Good luck!
