LOVE Heaven Or Las Vegas, Toolbox. i'm familiar w/the Raveonettes, Goat; they are pretty cool. been hearing lots about the Arctic Monkeys but i haven't heard anything yet. ten posts in and already there's stuff i want to check out. thanks! keep 'em coming, everybody. also, if you have any thoughts on what would be some good summer songs, i'd like to hear them. i'm one of those dorks who still makes mixes. they're great for my job (i'm a courier so i just drive around all day, hence the "need" for some new cd's). Zulu, you got me cracking up today! |

whoa, RevCo has a new album coming? sweeeet! my friend said that Chris Connelly works at the record store around the corner from his house in Chicago, so i was getting a little worried...i heard one song by She Wants Revenge; struck me as kinda pseudo-Interpol, which is in turn pseudo-Joy Division etc. don't know about that one...but i will definitely look for new RevCo. Chemak gots good taste. i love all three of those records. did you see the Clientele when they were here? the Dears opened; good, sleepy-pretty, mellow show. (i like the Dears even though their singer wants to be Morrissey so bad he can taste it--LOL) |

funny, Wmuchris, i just re-busted Greetings From Michigan after posting about it on the state songs thread. that album is beautiful. Super_d, you into Betty Davis at all? (not Bette the actress, but Betty the funkstress) just for shits and giggles, here's mine: -Michael Yonkers, "Microminiature Love" -Jean-Luc Ponty, "Individual Choice" -Terry Reid, "Superlungs" -Jaks, "Here Lies The Body of Jaks" (this was a fantastic band from the Ann Arbor area i used to go see any chance i got bout 10+ years ago. they sound like an evil carnival) -The Fiery Furnaces, "Blueberry Boat" -Trojan Dub Box Set i'm getting so sick of these though, hence this post... thanks everyone! terrific suggestions all. this is fun! hope i have enough $$$ for all the new cd's i'm gonna be shopping for (though thanks to Toolbox's generous mp3 donation at FSC tonight, i'll at least be saved for a little while)! |

Oldredfordette, i LOVE Mary J. my favorite is Share My World but the Mary album is also dear to my heart. Jimg, my entire record collection would be nonexistent were it not for recycling! it all started with Beatles For Sale at age twelve...plus thanks to modern technology i can buy any old record i've been looking for for ages i want if i'm willing to shell out the cash. God love the internet! glaring omission from my list since i listen to it once a day: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Howl. what was once a pretty good band for me has now become a great band with this record. |

Out of the 2200 songs on my iPod right now, these artists seem to be my most-played lately: Underworld Thievery Corporation Groove Armada Banco de Gaia Sasha & Digweed Deep Dish LTJ Bukem Gorillaz A Tribe Called Quest Pixies Radiohead Cocteau Twins Skinny Puppy Alice in Chains Astral Projection DJ Nickodemus My tastes are all over the place. I was listening to 99.5 WBAI in NYC last week Saturday night (independant station - the only NYC FM station worth listening to anymore...), and they played Prince's "Controversy" in it's enterity! Ohhh, memories! I lost my virginity listening to that album. |

I was playing a lot of Funkadelic yesterday, and listened to a couple of Who shows I have on tape which I slapped on to cdr's (Cincinnati 79, Charlotte '71)... on the turn table I've had this Paul Brett's Sage album called "Schizophrenia" on the go (not to be confused with a late 70's weird lite-music album of the same name which was a big seller and shows up as often as any used record)... also another recent vinyl find- Sabricas- Rock Enounter With Joe Beck... flamenco psychedelia! Also played a few 'spins' of a comp called "Hey Everybody! I've Got A New Dance" with a lot of 60's Latin soul party tunes and such. I don't have to work until later tomorrow, and I am considering another Who show, maybe Fillmore West 6.19.69 which I know was bootlegged quite often over the years but I think I have a 3rd generation copy of the excellent show. Bad Brains were a great band, they sure seemed tired last time I saw 'em though... Blowfly was okay last week, he was in Detroit the night before... Galactic are in my town and perhaps yours this week and lemme take this opportunity to say they are a fantastic live act if you dig New Orleans chunk-a-funk instrumentals in the tradition of the Meters and the Gaturs... tried to catch Ray Davis last week but Massey Hall shows start so damn early... |

SRG, I don't really like the new Black rebel Motorcycle Club all that much. I found their former sound was a bit better. The newer stuff seems...same as all the others. She Wants Revenge reminds of Suicide to some degree. What I like about them is that they are NOT jumping on the early '80s scene that is all the rage right now as they can attest they have been listening to early '80s mucsic since well...the early '80s. lol Check this site out. I believe it's based in AA as well. I have Emailed them a few times and they are quite pleasant. Enjoy. http://www.auralgasms.com/ |

I've been listening to a lot of Jackie McLean lately, he passed away 3/31, R.I.P. WKCR in NYC has been playing his music continuously for the last 2 days. I've also been listening to Th' Faith Healers. They recently got back together after disbanding about 12-13 years ago. Goat, you be trippin'! in NO way did the little bit of She Wants Revenge sound like Suicide to me...they wish they did! and Suicide would get no play at Best Buy (which is where i heard She Wants Revenge--LOL). and the new BRMC still rules. and i still love ya. i didn't know th' faith healers got back together. that's really cool. and i'll look for that 60's latin-soul comp too, Erikto. i was really into this Afro-Cuban funk comp awhile ago...there was this total knockout song by a singer named Julie Rufino who i guess is a member of a Cuban family group called (who'd guess?) the Rufinos, but i can't seem to find much about them or any of their records. i'm always on the lookout for weird stuff. |

Can someone tell me the name of the reggae record shop on the west side? I looked through the reggae section at the shop in Hamtramck, but it sucked. I'm looking for anything produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, or any obscure 70's Jamaican groups. It's starting to almost get a little warmer, and I need to beef up my collection for hanging out on the front porch. I did hear several cuts from the new Ray Davies album on Fresh Air today. Sounds quite good for a geezer. I'll have to pick up the new Stereolab--they always make for some good spring sounds. |

At this moment I am playing a fantastic compilation called 'Good For What Ails You- Music of the Medicine Shows'. It's a double cd with a huge booklet stuffed with great pictures and information about the artists. Lots of pre-depression blues, show standards and song-spoofs, from the twenties and early thirties. For some reason, it kind of reminds me of the Dylan/ Band basement tapes, maybe it's that innocent, rural sound backing down home lyrics about murder, hustling and betrayal... Everyone on here is pretty obscure, and a lot of home made instruments like modified stove pipes and home-made cellos are used. This c.d. really knocks me out, the biggest name on the disc is Pink Anderson, the "Pink" in Pink Floyd (any of you checking Gilmour in T.O. next month?) Bongman, I have a 5cd set (burned from a Japanese boot set) of PT outtakes from 65-78, great stuff! Some of it I already knew like cuts that appeared on "Obscure & Oblique" and "Genius Of Pete" vinyl boots from long ago. That 6.19.69 show is as amazing as I recall, almost as good as Amsterdam. Are there recordings of the Who at the Grande that you're aware of? There are quite a few '69 recordings, Toronto isn't bad from the first '69 tour, I'm guessing it was near the beginning of the tour. Cobo Hall 1970 is a good show, but a lousy recording. Cobo Hall 73 is apparently terrific, but I still don't have a copy. Hi AIW, I'd never have guessed you're a Skattalites fan. One of their horn players, Karl Bryan, has lived in Toronto for a long time, he's a friend of a friend. He used to busk outside the St Lawrence Market (well after leaving JA where he'd recorded lots of music in the 60's and 70's). I haven't seen the Skattalites since late '04 but they still put on great shows. They shot a movie here at the Palais Royale a few years ago when they played a one-off weekend reunion show with a lot of reggae/ ska/ rocksteady people, you should make the trip here next time they play. Latest pourchases- The Alegre Allstars, an unissued / lost Fania recording session from the late 60's, released by a French label about 6 years ago, and a rare lp of the Fania All Stars live with Mongo Santamaria, Manu Dibango and others. Haven't listened to it yet (no turn table in the store) but how can I have gone wrong with that line up? (Answer: if it was an 80's release, but it's not, it's from 1975). |

Can't say that I have anything perticular on the CD with the exception of the Motown backing tracks available on The Singing Machine karaoke disks, but... I've been spending a lot of time at 3 websites The Technicolor Web Of Sound www.techwebsound.com is the home of some wonderful psych music from the late '60's. Some of the stuff is pretty obscure, but the choices are really good as the webmaster knows his stuff. It's really far out, man.... Wolfgangs Vault www.wolfgangsvault.com is another, with tapes off the soundboard of Bill Graham sponsored concerts. He'd saved these tapes for years and they span concerts from about '68 through the late '70's. The rotation changes every Tuesday and is a varied and deep sample of the music of the era (Wolfgang was his given name). Truely a groovy site..... Then there's www.theclassicsoulnetwork.com which is well described by its name. It's got rare soul, but not so obscure that it will drive you nuts. A good site that's really right on, bro.... |

i went over to Encore Records last night in A2 and picked up Another Side of Bob Dylan, which nearly completes my Dylan vinyl collection. I'm short Freewheelin', and that's it. I'm also dangerously close to having all the Beatles singles released on Capitol, I'm about 2 or 3 short at last count, I think. As for recent music, has anybody heard of Antony and the Johnsons? their latest album is really, really great. I've also been listening to a lot of Jens Lekman. Swedish singer-songwriter, does most of his stuff in English. he's got a couple free EP's for download on his website if you want to check it out: http://www.jenslekman.com/pres ents.htm |

For the past week or so, I've had Jessye Norman's Amazing Grace CD playing in my car. Sometimes I just keep hitting the repeat button and listen to her sing Schubert's Ave Maria over and over. To me, the beauty, power, and majesty of Jessye Norman's voice is unequaled by any other living artist. |

AiW, yes, I've been a fan of the Skatalites for years, and they're in the spring/summer rotation for sure. Early Wailers stuff is good, too. I'm moving more towards the 70's Jamaican stuff in general, since the dub element added so much more to the music, and of course it's generally slower in tempo among other alterations. I want to pick up the Broken Flowers soundtrack by the Greenhornes, which is kind of ska-like. I was watching the movie and I thought at first it might be the Skatalites, but it's more contemporary with the same flavor, and much different from their garage sound (one or two of those guys is in Brandan Benson & Jack White's new band The Raconteurs--heard their single today on the radio today and I hope it keeps getting airplay). So, anyone know the name of that reggae record store? I could do a search, I know, but it's always better to just throw out the question with the possibility of getting other good inside tips. |

Superaygun, yep. That's Antony. VERY androgynous. Beautiful voice. Boy George and Lou Reed also make appearances on the album. It's truly beautiful. A very unique sound. They're apparently huge in Britain. |

cool, aram. i will check that out. thanks. Douglasm, if you're into more obscure psychedelia, are you familiar with Michael Yonkers? late 60's cult/weirdo-garage artist with a Frankensteined-together customized guitar...SubPop just reissued his album Microminiature Love. i saw him do one of his last live sets (he has a degenerative spinal cord condition due to an accident in the early 70's so he has officially quit touring forever...) last fall at the CAID and it was awesome, just him and his crazy guitar. also, is anyone familiar with Celebration? i mentioned a band called Jaks from Ann Arbor in an earlier post...apparently their singer and guitarist are now Celebration, morphing their former cracked-out punk carnival/torture chamber sound into...cabaret/dinner-theater punk? LOL sounds weird but it's really good, and Katrina has a really unique vocal style (she was a guest on the last TV On The Radio record). i guess they were here the other day opening for the Rogers Sisters, a show someone did try to drag me to to no avail...d'oh! |

Can't say as I've ever heard of Michael Yonkers. I did find a sample of Micromineature Love on the web, and although that's something TechWeb would probably not play, it's interesting enough to make me go out and look for the record. Thanks for the recomendation. |
