Wow! I have some of their stuff on a couple of Brazillian compilations, I wander how they sound, or who's playing with them these days, or if they're coming closer to my town than Chicago...? Thanks for the tip, Slows. Maybe I can visit Detroit and grab that dollar-bus ride to Chicago, I've always wanted to see that city, anyhow. I just threw in a cd of Reverend Cletus and the Soul Saviours- 'Soul Habbit'... funky instrumentals! |

Why don't the folks at TasteFest grab the opportunity to get OsMutantes? Can you imagine the level of coolitude - Trippy Brazilian music in the shadow of the Golden Towers of the Fisher Building? Right after Ray Davies? Yowza. |

Thanks, Oldredfordette... when's Ray Davies? I went to his show here a little after 8 and had already missed a few songs, I saw him 10 years ago at a theatre here when he was in town for a week solo, wasn't sure how much I wanted to spend on his current band after arriving late (Massey Hall is an uptight venue)... |

Current line up (no dates for any of them yet) Chicago rapper Common. British blues rockers Eric Burdon and the Animals. Kinks leader Ray Davies, who just released his first official solo album. Southern hard rockers Kings of Leon. Canadian critical favorites the New Pornographers. Hip New York dance rockers the Bravery. Fantastic! I heard a song from Eric Burdon's new record, he sounds great. |

I have been listening to Cypress Avenue out of Kansas City public radio lately, Bill Shapiro played a cut from Burdon a couple of weeks ago (along with an excellent Dion career retrospective) that blew me away. Who is listening to music podcasts? I listen to Rhino Records hilarious ones, and Paste Magazine's every so slightly too serious ones. But we've threadjacked this. I am listening obsessively to Teddy Thompson's Separate Ways - apparently talent can be herditary! |

i worship the Mars Volta but i don't really associate it with anger. unless you were just speaking in a general sense, in which case, i'm already there...Daydream Nation is one of my all-time favorite albums. very little can top the majesty of "Rain King." YAY, Pam, another PJ fan!!! early Peej is great for bad moods (4-Track Demos!). a friend of mine downloaded for me the song "Uh Huh Her" which she did as an encore the last time i saw her and i thought was unbelievable but was left off the album. AMAZING song. |

You amaze me with the depth of your musical knowledge, Super. You've GOT to get in touch with Michael Coleman at WDET...at least get your foot in that door. Liz has to take a vacation once or twice a year, and I'm going to press him into doing more with music exclusively on-line. I thkn there is potential revenue that nobody is noticing just yet...plus I NEED to get Jon Penney spinning music in my ears again for proper marathon training. I'm going down-home DE-troit for a few hours and then some truly obscure today...starting with Audra Kubat's "since i fell in love with the music"...then philosopher/songwriter extraordinaire Joe Lisboa's "Live from the Grand Hotel Abyss"...then a young group from Pennsylvania trying to make it in NYC Crescent and Frost with their "Open Doors" disc that my thinking friend in NYC recorded for them. Then I might have to wander to Ani diFranco's "Educated Guess" and end with Peter Townshend and Ronnie Lane's "Rough Mix". I've GOT to stump you on at least ONE of these... |

(<---hiding wicked grin with hand) thanks a lot, Gannon!! it's nice to be comfortable enough to let the world know what a frickin' geek i am!! and yep, you got me on Kubat and Lisboa and "Open Doors"...but i'm with you on the Ani DiFranco and ANYTHING Pete Townshend. i have a shitload of his albums--including Rough Mix--on vinyl, tucked away in nice plastic sleeves in a crate in my living room (even some of the cheesier, overproduced 80's stuff). i was a Who NUT as a kid. a couple months ago i went to the R&R Hall Of Fame again for the Tommy exhibit. just being in the same room with their instruments i was twelve years old all over again. |

Awright, then your assignment for the summer is to see Audra at least twice...she can be mesmerizing. As for Joe Lisboa, he is a neighbor of mine here in the Market, and his group of friends helped me realize that there IS hope for the next generation. Heh. You couldn't and probably wouldnt' know that Crescent and Frost album...unless you go 'new city country'...they moved from Pennsylvania to NYC and have something special going on. Their lead singer has a stage presence and sense of humor that steals and crushes hearts...but they had GREAT difficulty recording her in the studio, I guess she needs audience feedback! Caught them first at the Living Room in NYC...reportedly the venue where Norah Jones cut her teeth, which has easily the finest sound system I've EVER heard in a bar. But the vibe is what really makes the place...I hope the Buzz grows into something like that, it's my new favorite joint downtown. I've gone through two vinyl versions of Rough Mix, that title cut turns me into a whirling dervish during the right phase of the moon. But I'm going to have to dig out Empty Glass today...I can already hear that piano lead-in to Let My Love Open the Door bouncing around my noggin' already. GOT to get some caffeine. |

Erikto, haven't heard that High Numbers recording...is this a fairly new release, or a bootleg or something? what's the skinny? agree with Pam on Forever Changes...that's a great spring record too. |

Hi Superaygun, the High Numbers recording is a fairly recent discovery. It's kind of a boot, but I don't believe it has been 'bootlegged' so far. It sounds too good to have been a clandestine recording, and I think there was some speculation as to whether this was recorded by Chris Stamp for an intended documentary film soundtrack at the time. There are a couple of versions of "Dance To Keep From Crying" (also on the June '64 Marquee Club audience tape that's been floating around for decades), and a snappy, surprisingly tame rendition of "Young Man Blues". I highly recommend it. Still wandering about any ye olde Detroit area recordings of various acts, just curious... I've got a few (MC 5, SRC, Rationals, all at the Grande, as well as international acts)... |

Hi Pam, I certainly do have that one... I hung out with Mr Sinclair in Detroit last summer (he's not going to be visiting Canada anytime soon) and I wish I could have asked him a number of MC 5-related questions but it was a party-scenario and I thought better... I was 'deejaying' at a party tonight and almost played my favourite version of "Looking At You" from that '66 Breakout but it looked like I could lose the crowd if I wasn't careful so I threw on other garage type stuff instead. Then I went to see the Saints at the Horseshoe, if anyone here's big on Aussie 70's punk... dunno what happened next but for some reason the doorman and I had a misunderstanding, just like the old days when I was always running afoul of doormen, and the guy didn't even want to let me in the club, then another door man let me in for free as long as I agreed not to drink, as if I was some bad ass lumberjack fresh out of the bush for the first time in '06 or something like that... So the Saints were okay, not great... dunno who the singer is, they encored with "River Deep Mountain High", and a sense of okayness prevailed... |
