Attorney Sherrie P. Guess will present the documentary film The Meaning of ‘Life’: Restoring Fairness to Michigan’s Parole System. The film, which was produced by Citizens Alliance on Prisons and Public Spending (CAPPS), examines the plight of paroleable lifers serving sentences in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Through extensive research, CAPPS found that more than 7,000 prisoners had served their minimum sentences, were no longer a threat to public safety, and could be placed on parole with a savings to taxpayers of $145 million. Among the group of parole-eligible prisoners were paroleable lifers who have spent an average of 22 years in prison, which is 10 years longer in most cases than the judge who sentenced them expected them to serve. In this forum, we will examine the high cost of denying parole and the social and economic impact on our communities.
