Detroit Synergy will host its fundraiser Pub Crawl VII: Hazen Pingree Birthday Pub Crawl on Saturday, August 26. This event will feature tours of Detroit’s most exciting bars, complete with drink specials at each stop. A birthday cake to commemorate Hazen Pingree’s 166th birthday will be served at the end. Registration will run from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Bronx Bar (4476 2nd Ave in Detroit). From there we will visit the Traffic Jam & Snug as well as Motor City Brewing Works & Winery, the Old Miami and Cass Café. Tickets can be purchased for $15 at http://www.detroitsynergy.org/ projects/pubcrawl in advance or $20 at the door. This includes a t-shirt and cover at each of the bars. Women’s t-shirts are also available for no additional charge when pre-ordered. Hazen Pingree was a four-term Republican Mayor of Detroit (1889-1897) who also served as Governor of Michigan (1897-1901). He was known for ending corruption in municipal contracts. During the depression of 1893, Mayor Pingree expanded public welfare programs and started public works for the unemployed; building new schools, parks and public baths. Detroit Synergy is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. Its mission is to generate positive perceptions and opinions about Detroit by bringing together a diverse community and building upon the city’s strengths and resources to realize a common vision for it. Please visit http://www.detroitsynergy.org/ for more information about the group. DISCLAIMER: Anyone wishing to participate must be at least 21-years of age with valid ID. Those without valid ID, or who are under 21-years of age, will not be able to participate in this event. |

This route is my favorite in all of Detroit. I love taking suburbanites and out-of-towners on it, so I thought it would be great to do it on a grand scale. These are some unique watering holes. And the food is pretty good as well. |

How come the Temple Bar isn't part of the pub crawl? |

The Temple would really only be fun on a pub crawl if you brought with you the wives and girlfriends of the Temple regulars! |

No, The Temple would really only be fun if we filled a lot of tin pans with cold cream and started a pie fight then left. That's them transvestites' worst nightmare. --Brenda. |

I am so going, not because I like pubs - because I am a huge Hazen Pingree fan. Seriously. I have to have that shirt. |

Sharmaal or Other Veteran Crawlers: A friend will be picking a couple of us up post-crawl, around 10:30. Q: Does the group progress along en masse by bar, so that we can predict the final stop, or is it more a meandering shuffle back and forth? Thanks. |

Amy_p, I'd imagine that it's going the order as listed. Bronx -> dual double dip of Traffic Jam/Motor City Brewing Works (since they are across the street from each other) -> Old Miami -> Cass Cafe. There will probably be the mass of walkers from place to place, but these 5 places are all so close together that a bunch of us will probably split off from time to time for extra time at one spot or another. So speaking for myself... I'll probably be in the "meandering shuffle" category. Around 10:30, you'll probably be either at the Old Miami or at Cass Cafe both on Cass, down the street from each other. It shouldn't be too tough for your friend to track you down. I'll see you all there after I climb off of my bike. I'm one of those people getting the full day of Detroit Synergy with the SW Detroit Bike Tour in a couple hours then the pub crawl later today. (... we'll see how that turns out on Sunday...) http://www.detroitsynergy.org/ |

Thank you, Arcas! Very helpful. Happy pedalling, and say hello if you spot me crawling (big hair, too much eye make-up, and smiling). |

Howdy All, In general we crawl as a group. The route we are visiting today is as follows... The Bronx (5:00pm - 6:00pm) The Old Miami Traffic Jam / Motor City Cass Cafe (Official End) So you should have your friend pick you up at the Cass Cafe. I wanted to make sure we got to the Old Miami during daylight so people could get a chance to see the "Oasis" there. And the Cass Cafe keeps the kitchen open late for those that will be hungry near the end. Hope to see you all there. There are a handful of Women's shirts left, so if you need to pay today get there early to guarantee yourself one. Happy Birthday Hazen! |
