On the eastside the sun rose a millisecond earlier. But lost those fleeting sun rays later. Hey WEST SIDE STORY. Play and silver screen productions. Nice Smiley Face. Very DESIRABLE. A City with a pulse. |

My great grandparents lived on Wayburn between Warren and Chandler Park Dr. for decades. When they died, several family members later inhabited that house, including my parents, briefly. My other set of great grandparents lived on Nottingham for an equally long period of time, also between Warren and Chandler Park Drive. I like to think this makes the Eastside my ancestral homeland. Living in Hamtramck now, as I do, I feel somewhat as a Palestinian must feel. |

When that closed, I worked the Vouge. When that closed, I went over to the Eastland 2. then I graduated and had to get a real job. So the Eastland closing wasn't my fault. Ditto to most of the above for hang outs. |

Walking tours ... (not a slam) West Bloomfield in 1980 .... a different planet. Hell I was in Colorado. The geographics defined DETROIT CITY LIMITS long before 1980...(again, non offensive, different times. I/and others cannot relate how we grew up). Hope you understand and appreciate. Are blogs only for the older farts when relating to "WHEN"? |

I have many memories of going to Beacon East theater and Eastland mall to get my birthday present at Hudson's. I really do love the city.....I wish I personally had the $$ to make a bigger impact! |

Did W. Bloomfield even have paved roads in the 1980s? Let alone sidewalks... Eastside/GP: where it's at. St. Clare Parish (not anymore) Grosse Pointe South High (aka Grosse Pointe High School) Mack/Warren landmarks for me: Balduck Park, East Side Tennis, Yorkshire Food Market, Captain's Restaurant (out of business, now "Bogarts"), Mr. C's deli, the Pointe After sports shop. Born at St. John's. First car from Bob Maxey's used lot. I spent a little time at our lakefront park, but you all don't want to hear about that. I would have gotten you all in as guests...just know that. |

Detroitej72, yes there were 3 Chathams Supermarkets all along or near that stretch of Kelley. The small Chatham store several blocks east of Moross was Chatham #1, the first store in the chain which was established in the 1940's (IIRC) by the 4 Weisberg brothers. Then they expanded, and built Chatham #2 over on Hayes near Houston-Whittier. Then they built several more on the east side (such as Chatham #7 at 8 Mile & Gratiot) before they built Chatham #8 at Morang & Kelley. Chatham #1 was much smaller than the others, and I believe the building is extand, a Vegas Grocery store IIRC. Kathleen, are you sure about Lipperts? Lipperts Coins & Stamps was located at E. Warren & Harvard, and later moved to 9 Mile & Greater Mack in SCS, and is today located at 8 Mile where Vernier branches off from it (across from Eastland). The Mack & University "Coins & Stamps" was owned by Roman Lester and Bill Fiscus until the 1980's. Jjaba, you are always welcome to come to the east side! One interesting note about the far east side... although the businesses in that are have changed dramatically over the last 5 decades, and all the great Elm trees have long disappeared (in the 1960's), the residential stock of houses is surprisingly intact. I can only think of one derelict house in that area that has been torn down in all that time (at Morang and W. Ford Service Dr.). And then there's the house at Southampton & University (2nd house from corner) that blew up in the 1960's in a natural gas explosion... ditto for another along Cadieux between Warren & Mack in the last 10 years. |
