After catching hell for (an alleged) thread jacking, I just thought I'd put a finger on the pulse of the working stiffs of Detroit: What do you do to make a dime?

Land Surveying but im laid off now. I used to work all over the city and got to get a close up view of many houses, structures and some hidden parts of town I would never have seen otherwise. I also got to see a lot of old maps and land surveys. The company I worked for is the oldest company in the state they had survey crews killed by indians in the 1800's!

Bullet, my remarks weren't meant for you, but CharlottePaul. You were fine, I said "seems fun, at least you're keeping our fair city clean". I apologize if you thought I was accusing you of it.

Fareastsider- My grandfather owned a surveying equipment in Ferndale on 8 mile. I think the man who bought it moved to Livonia... I would have to ask my grandmother the name of the company but does this ring a bell at all?

Currently I am a Public Works Employee. We do it all; sweep streets, plow snow, salt roads, cut grass, patch roads, pick rubbish, trim trees, and tons of other stuff. I have a side job as well in the recycling biz. And the remolding biz. And the coaching biz. And the pic posting biz. And the dad biz. I work 24 or more hours a day, and usually sleep while I drive. I am also a chronic pain patient who works through his vacation days. Other then that, I don’t do much.

Started out as an usherette in a theatre at 15..then on to waitressing for a couple of years. Moved along to lab clerk in a hospital, then medical assistant in a doc's office. Took a couple years off when my son was born, then went on to managing a court reporting office, a machine sales office, 2 different production auto parts sales reps offices, did some typing in a lawyer's office, bookkeeping at a pet food supply company, and transcription for court reporters. Now own home-based business doing secretarial and bookkeeping work on a contract basis for small businesses. Current major client is a real estate developer who has built new rental units on the east side of Detroit. Always looking for new clients!

I've worked for a public utility for 16 years. Longest I ever had a job before that was at the Detroit Free Press. I was an independent carrier salesman. (paperboy) for 4-1/2 years. That was back in the days when you had to collect door to door every week. That taught me how difficult it is to separate people from their money.

Customer: "Wait til my parents get back?"

Me: "Hey dude, you're about 18, you don't have a few dollars in your pocket?!"

RN at the DMC for the last 24 years or so. Before that I was a welder for Ford. I had a brief stint working for the state archives in Lansing in 1975-76. Prior to that I was restaurant labor of almost every description.

I liked the welding job the best.....

Started out delivering The News, then both The news and Free Press. When I got in my teens I dropped the routes and began working for Johnny Mac's Cooky Factory as a driver and stock clerk.
Then in 1985, I began working for Young Supply Company located in the Milwaukee and Lodge area.( my first west side job Jjaba :-) ) Worked my way up from stock clerk, to semi driver delivering to our stores, anywhere from Traverse City to Toledo. Occasionally running dead compressors to Indiana to pick up new ones. Eventually I was the warehouse supervisor for about 5 years.
In 2003, I had to move to Indiana for the birth of our first child, MY third.
After looking for warehouse management job for 6 months (down here you need a 2 year degree in order to manage people.. whatever happened to hands on training).
So, I was forced back behind the wheel and have driven for Cardinal Health a medical products company for the last 3 years. Live in a small farm town of Whitestown.

Started out as clerical at Price Waterhouse & Co. while in high school. (Moved with them from the old DB&T building to the newly-built RenCen.) Next to Ma Bell where I started doing data entry for the Safety. Within a couple years, got promoted to Computer Operations Manager which I did for about 12 years. After that, bounced through a bunch of jobs including a 5 year stint in CA. Now, government grunt, designing and creating web sites and managing large contracts. Government contracting SUCKS!!

Honestly? I haven't had a steady job since 2003.

Spotty employment until present.

Currently, I'm a freelance writer. and I run a blog. I haven't gotten "paid" yet. I'd like to publish a Political Opinion column for one of the major syndicates. We'll see if that ever happens.

I'm too freakin' old and out of shape and got too many physical problems for manual labor now. I got a CDL-A, but seeing the corrupt insurance industry is so screwed up, I cannot get a good paying job.

So, I write.

My Blog is at:

http://thepopulistblog.com

(I don't know how to make that link clickable)

Started working at 14 doing babysitting, lifeguard job, etc. Worked as a student assistant at WSU from 1977-1981. Then was a co-op student doing computer programming at Harper Hospital from 1981-83. After I got my computer science degree from WSU I moved to Minnesota in January 1984 for a job as a software engineer for a large computer manufacturer. 23+ years and thousands of lines of PL1/C/C++/Java/HTML/XML later I'm still there.

First job - mowed graveyards. Then pizza delivery, UPS loader, cook, carpet sales, election official, flower delivery, janitor, ESL teacher, study abroad advisor, technology consultant, manager at a technology firm, State Department, web design, translator, database design, GIS manager - not necessarily in that order. Some of that was as an intern or for Kelly Services so I don't know if that counts.

Still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.....

First job was babysitting, then in college I worked in the cafeteria (MSU). Loved my job...worked in the dishroom (omg..we had a ball!) and was a student supervisor. Ended up doing a lot of the hiring of other student employees and scheduling for each semester. I learned a lot about food service.
During the summer, I was on paint crew at MSU and painted dorm rooms...another awesome job! I really did learn how to paint.
After college..no "real" job...worked at Kmart and substitute taught. Then I subbed for five years and also worked at a warehouse in Ann Arbor where I learned quite a bit...shipping and receiving, warehousing, learned to use the shipping system and the postal meter, did some customer service with GM and other clients, trained temporary employees, opened and closed monthly tickets for different clients. It was great because they let me come in if I didn't get called to sub for the day and also worked there over holidays and the summer. They pretty much begged me to take the position of supervisor permanently, but I knew I'd never teach if I didn't keep at it. It was very tempting though since the pay was great.
Then...finally....I started teaching first grade...and have been there ever since!

I'm an electrical Electrical Engineer for an automotive supplier. Actually, that was my previous job too, which I left voluntarily in search of something better.

I also do consulting work on the side. Right now I'm installing a VoIP PBX for a local real estate agent. Ahh, nothing like getting out of work at 6 pm only to work in the telecom room until midnight...only to get up to do it all over again!

As a result, I have developed an unhealthy Mountain Dew addiction.

I started working for the city of detroit while majoring in fine, performing and communication arts @ WSU. The next 17 years were spent splitting time between my municipal duties and freelancing in my field of study. Left the city last year. Currently teaching and working in my chosen field.

So, the cat is out of the bag. Yes, I worked for the "MAN" for 17 years. I was a union employee in the same city department all that time. I started under the Young administration, survived through the Archer era and walked away after 5 years of Kilpatrick's reign. Oh, the stories I could tell.

Well in 1998 I got my first job as a bagger at University Foods and worked there as a cashier for two years. When I quit I went to work for Raupp Campfitters in R.O. as an assistant manager. Then worked for the Fresh air fund at there camp in fishkill, Ny. Then moved out to Vermont to Go to Green Mountain college. Delivered News papers to different ski resorts on Killington. Then as a respit worker working with a 9 year old with severe behavioral problems. Got tired of the Pseudo environmental movement at GMC and missed the D and moved back in 04'. While still at GMC came home in the summer of 03' and interned at the Greening of Detroit. Went Back to University Foods as a cashier and community liason for 2 years and left in August of last year. Now work as an independent contractor for a property restoration company in Birmingham. I graduated from Marygrove after 8 years of college last week and am looking to get into the nonprofit sector.

There is a brief synopsis. :-)

My first job was at JA Supermarket in SW Detroit as a cashier for 2 years, and I got laid off when the new people took over. I volunteered one summer at Southwest Community Policing. Then I started at La Fiesta from June '05- Feb '06, when I started at Kroger (Lincoln Park, if you see me wave :-) ). I've been there since. I am also in college, and I do web design, tutor high school kids in Algebra and Trig, and sell Avon. Oh, I'm 20. :-)

My first job was for the Greening of Detroit as a corps member every summer from when I was 14 to 19. It was a good job it exposed me to parts of Detroit I had never knew existed which is probably the reason I still sympathize for this city and am interested in sticking around to see it rise again. Years passed there and then I became a team leader driving the kids around while they watered trees and pretended to care about the environment.

My senior year in High School I worked at a womens shoe store as a salesman, which I was terrible at since I hate corn infested middle aged women feet. Around that time I also worked for DPS in an office where they taught administrators to do something with computer programs, I didn't really ask what as I didn't really care. I was a student assistant which meant I played every single game on Yahoo, made coffee, and flirted with the temps they would hire. Good usage of tax payer dollars, I know.

When I got to MSU, I immediately worked for the Kellogg Center as a banquet server. Thrilling job, I just loved working until 1am every Friday and Saturday, watching old drunk white guys dance at weddings and make amusing stereotypes I thought were myths come true, and staring in awe at how much our underachieving football team ate before each game. I did that for a year and a half until the great day came when I got fired for my "lack of enthusiasm" for my job. At which point I enthusiastically found a job as a glorified telemarketer for MSU, which I still do in between classes.

The best job I ever had was working construction during a semester break for a belligerent Haitian and a bunch of illegal immigrants. The pay was good and it reminded me of why getting a degree would be a good thing as the dust from bricks and concrete is hard to wash out the crack of your ass.

So to summarize this unnecessarily long winded post I am still a student. In 5 years I'd love to post what I am doing then as something more meaningful.

First job, Heisler's Pharmacy on Gratiot north of State Fair.

Graduated to Shopper's Market on 9 Mile, worked my way from bagger up to 'dairy manager', then on to bigger and better as a merchandiser at Melody Farms.

After many stops in between, I find myself working as a "1099" freelancer,(laymans' terms) self employed in the field of advertising.

I am also currently running for city council in the city of Hamtramck.

Certified (certifiable?) Auto Mechanic for the last 21 years in a BMW dealership in northern Germany. Before that three and out with the U.S.Army. Reserve status ran out three months before Desert Storm I started. At home, I worked at a little caesars, did a short stint at a tele-marketing gig, did some light building maintenance (changing fluorescent lights) in Southfield at Greenfield and 8- Mile after high school (CT-`81).Probably THE worst student those hallowed halls ever saw. Yeah, really going places!

Business Analyst and other assorted titles clouding the IT realm.

Detroitteacher, I'll have my MSW in 2009, opening up for business a therapy/consulting practice, and have a special interest in Autism. My niche client is the kid labeled "problem" that nobody can understand -- and the adults they become (artists & writers, much of the time ;). Also, my aunt teaches kids with autism in Lincoln Park.

You want to talk about a down industry?

Our biggest customers USED to be Pulte, Toll Bros, Crosswinds, Centex and Fountain Homes.

We also USED to have locations in Kalkaska, Reed City, Plainwell, Cadillac, Waterford and Hillman.

Help a brother out, buy a house, or remodel the one you have, but hire someone to do it!

MAYOR.....So glad to hear you won't be serving at Kellogg Center this weekend when this decidedly middle aged woman attends my niece's wedding.

"My senior year in High School I worked at a womens shoe store as a salesman, which I was terrible at since I hate corn infested middle aged women feet."

"When I got to MSU, I immediately worked for the Kellogg Center as a banquet server. Thrilling job, I just loved working until 1am every Friday and Saturday, watching old drunk white guys dance at weddings and make amusing stereotypes I thought were myths come true..."

Talk about a stereotypical myth.....you fill the ticket quite well.....Just beware, one day, good Lord willing, you may well be middle aged and enjoying yourself without silly youthful inhibitions.

My First [real] job was at Ford. Left Dearborn for 'rosier' fields in Chicago at pre-Enron Andersen. I'm still in Chicago as a Team Lead where I preach the 'good programmers are lazy programmers' message to my underlings...

I'd like to get back to Detroit but I've been of the opinion that Detroit is unkind to I.T professionals (and extremely pleasant to Engineers) has this changed?

Certified IT Project Manager - over 10 years now. I like it, but I'm horribly under paid for my experience and credentials. Afraid to make a move for more $$ though - things are so unstable every where. At least here I know I'm good for the current duration at least, given the project I'm on at the moment.
