Last night, while contemplating a life of leadership and public service, I began jotting down names of metro Detroit leaders--business, education, government, nonprofit, etc.--who are worthy of admiration, imitation, and trust.

Who are the "great ones" among us? The men and women who you would choose to be your mentors, role models, and teachers? Who are the civic-minded leaders who you wish we could have a hundred more just like them in business, education, and government? Who truly "gets it" and has the guts to do something about it?

Who would be on your list?

Maria Elena Rodriguez--President of the Mexicantown Community Development Council. I have not yet met this woman, but everything I hear about her is positive.

Kelli Kavanaugh--credits too numerous to count...don't yet know anyone who dares say NO to her when asked. Every project that has even a slight touch from her shines.

HAD to bring forth a few of the great women in this town...y'all are sexist, capitalist pigs.

Heh.

Doesn't get a whole lot of press for all of his work to get mass transit in Detroit. If anyone can get it done, it will be him.

-Penske
-Kwame Kilpatrick
-anyone who has invested, with a genuine effort for quality (i.e. most landlords other than Kefalinos), in the city over the past decade or so when others were laughing. These people are leaders and trend-setters.

Tom Barwin would make the list if he didn't get fed up with the lack of cooperation or progress around here and move on to greener pastures.

Thanks Dabirch, we needed that.

You, too, Sarge. He is in a special category entirely, Servant-Leader. We notice them when they are NOT there, mostly.

Cheers!

Gannon --

Although quite different, the three have some very similar qualities.

(1) Realism. They understand the city. The see its short comings. And they use that as a base to try to do what it is they think needs to be done.

(2) Meaningful Accomplishment. Each of them have actually done things that have had an impact on the people, or the neighborhood, or the city as a whole. Talkers...yes. But doers much more.

(3) Generosity. Each of them buy me a drink when I see them.

Robert Allessee had a golf bad the size of a small cadillac.

And he had a bar inside that thing (a ton of splits and some mixers).

Weighed a ton -- especially for a 12 year old looper.

But he was a pretty decent tipper, back in the day.

Maggie on the other hand...
