Heard Ernie will be doing Tigers play by play coming up for a game. Is that true? |

It's true. Ernie will pinch-hit on FSN "Retired Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell will return to the air May 24, but on television rather than radio. Harwell will work Fox Sports Net's broadcast of the Tigers-Angels game at Comerica Park, working as a guest commentator with play-by-play announcer Mario Impemba. Harwell will sub for Rod Allen, who will be in Arizona for his son's high school graduation. ..." http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20070511/SPO RTS12/705110356/1050/SPORTS02 BTW...welcome to the Forum!! |

If this Harwell kid does a good job filling in for Rod Allen, do you think they might pick him up for some more work? |

I caught Ernie's last home game and final away game a few years ago and it really upset me. That voice is so branded in my skull. He sounds like...like "Saturday in the Summer". Get em back! |

i agree, larryinflorida - hearing him broadcast a few innings during the playoffs last year, that was the very thought that went through my head. |

As much as I didn't like Schembechler, he wasn't entirely responsible for Ernie's firing. A guy named Jim Long at WJR and a marketing schmuck named Jeff Odenwald were also culpable. Bo actually softened the blow for Ernie. But then again, try telling that to Miss Lulu. Ilitch has his faults, too, and I'm no fan of his, but I give him kudos for bringing Ernie back when he bought the Tigers. Now about that old ballpark, "Mr. I" ... |

Harpernottingham is right about that fiasco. That clip from larryinflorida was great because of the sponsors: tobacco, beer, and oil. Ain't that America? |

The cancerous, polluter sponsors have changed to more um, "benign" ones, but that damn clothespin on the nose voice remains the same after 40+ years eh? lol We love it! |

Ernie will do a good job pinch hitting for Rod Allen. I think he enjoys being "retired" now. He seems to be doing more ad work than ever before. That is a nice gig with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I actually got to interview him at his house a few years ago. He is a true gentleman and a wonderful host. |

Mix in the sound of lawn mowers and birds chirping, and make sure his voice has no treble from the upright tube Crosley radio my dad kept in the garage, and you have the most memorable summer afternoons of my life. |

Memory help needed here. Didn't Harry Heilman, after he retired from broadcasting Tiger games do an inning or so every home Sunday during the early Harwell/Kell period? This would be in the early '60's. |

Douglasm...don't think so. Heilman died in 1951, long before the Harwell/Kell era. |

Interesting Larryinflorida - I hadn't remembered that Ernie & George broadcasted the game from WKMH and not WJR during those days. |
