Don't be afraid to try their Macaroni & Cheese. Also, if you're into good beers, they have a few of the Samuel Smith's on the menu...Taddy Porter is a good, rich, dark beer. Haven't had a bad thing on their menu, get their earlier than usual to avoid their line! |

The only thing I've ever heard mixed reviews on was the ribs, which reportedly were a little dry and tough (never had them personally). I always get the BIG THREE, excellent. Also, if you've got a big hunger, the wings are phenomenal, dry-rubbed & smoked w/ your choice of sauce, and the mac & chez too. |

I find their corn bread disappointing. Perhaps it is more "authentic" but not nearly as good as Boston Market (I know you can't believe I'm comparing them, but I LOVE BoMa cornbread!) The Mac and Cheese is damn good. I had the ribs 2x and thought they were pretty darn good, but I'm not a BBQ conniouseur (sp?). I had a pulled sandwich once. If I'm not thinking of some other BBQ place I've been. Recall it being pretty darn good too. Their extensive menu of sauces certainly makes all their stuff taste better.... |

Has the service improved recently? I have had a couple of profoundly bad service experiences there. So bad it has slid down quite a ways on my list of favorite places to eat. And I always get the Yardbird-minus the NC Sauce. Need to leave more room for the apple BBQ sauce... |

Zimm really?! Im there almost once a week. Even when its super busy and i still usually get my food in at least 15 mins. Im waited on immediately at the bar and when im looking to be seated. It gets crammed in there most nights during dinner time. You might need to make your presence known more. I think its great that it gets busy. I heard they made will farrell waited 45 mins for a seat. |

Mdoyle - I may be full of it but I question Zimm. Seeing that Slows does not put any sauce on their food I question "I always get the Yardbird-minus the NC Sauce." They suggest the sauce but you never have to order it minus the sauce because the sauce does not come on the food. |

They suggest the sauce but you never have to order it minus the sauce because the sauce does not come on the food." Jt1- A low # of posts does not mean I don't know what I'm talking about. to quote their menu: "The Yardbird $ 7.95 Applewood smoked, pulled chicken, sauteed mushrooms, cheddar & bacon with Slows Mustard Sauce." I was wrong-it was the Mustard Sauce, not the NC Sauce. Either way, I ask them not to put it on. And yes, you were full of it. And MDoyle, like you, I have had excellent service at the bar. The bartenders have never been a disappointment-anything but! My problem is that I have had poor service on the floor, and it's not related to the overall busyness of the resturant. To the contrary, the worst service I've had there was with the resturant half full. I've had waiters who were so clueless, they seemed like cooks pulled out of the kitchen because the waitstaff hadn't shown up. Things like never coming back to check on my long empty drink for the entire meal (where I've had to go the the bar myself with my empty glass to get a refill) or a 10+ minute wait after asking for my bill until I finally get it (again, having to go to the waitstand to ask for it again.) And as I mentioned, it has only been a problem over the past 6-12 months. My service experiences were much better when they first opened. Of course, Jt1 wouldn't believe me because I hadn't posted when I ate there twice in Slow's 1st week... |

NC sauce is always added to the pulled pork--unless you request it without. It gives it a little kick, but doesn't overwhelm the flavor if you want to add another sauce to it. I'd recommend apple barbeque. Man, I'm getting hungry. Too bad I'm 290 miles away from Slows. |

Outdoor seating is available now. With patio furniture thats as unique as the inside. Ill be down there in about and hour and a half... Reason here I come. And Zimm Im sorry to hear about your poor experience. Im friends with some of the staff so that probably helps as far as service goes. When my drink gets low I usually just go up to the bar and have em refill it. (Message edited by mdoyle on May 19, 2007) (Message edited by mdoyle on May 19, 2007) |

I actually was invited into the new bar. It's two doors down from slows next to the reality company. There were two people (man and woman) out painting the second story window trim yesterday and I asked what was up. They were really excited to tell me all about it. I now forget some of the details about the type of bar it was going to be (an afternoon at slows can erase a memory). I do however remember them being really enthusiastic about the original bar still being in really good shape. The rest of the place was gutted down to the brickwork, some initial framing was in on the ceiling. Apparently they had owned the place since '03 but were working hard to bring in enough startup and renovation money. The guy said 6 months but we'll see. It is great to see work going on though. I hope they were as happy as I was for their contribution to the neighborhood. |

Yeah, I saw them outside with the ladder Saturday when I was hanging televisions at the Gaelic League. Looked like they were deciding something by committee, then sending someone up the ladder. There were about seven or eight people at street level at one point. Didn't look like it would be a good outcome, but when I walked to Slows for what I thought was an early dinner (5:30), looked like they had made progress. I had to skip Slows because they were just WAY too busy, not even a single seat at the bar...dang. So, it'll be three in the afternoon today...it's good to be on flextime. Delayed Gratification sucks, though. |

Flyby had a grand night at Slows Saturday night. With three beautiful women in arm and downtown almost impassable. Slows was the place to be. Upon entering we were informed of a forty-five minute wait. Perhaps a small gratuity slipped to the hostess might acquire a table for four a bit sooner. A sip from the first of a few Dewar’s and water at the bar soon led to a call “flyby … party of four”.
My three dates ordered: Slows ribs, two pulled pork sandwiches called the “Reason” and flyby had the pulled pork dinner. Food was excellent and the drinks hardy. Total for the night including gratuities and valet parking $107.00 Another grand night in the Big D. |

There for the first time last night. A little crowded (parked east of the Gaelic league). Got lucky...got seated by the front window right away. The baseball crowd left shortly after. Good food...My company had the pulled pork (highly recommend) good ribs, potato salad and mac and cheese. Will return! |

Start with a Motor City Ghettoblaster beer. Then order the Split Pea & Okra Fritter appetizer. Then the Carolina Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, or the Catfish. The apple bbq sauce is best. I found the baked beans too spicy and watery, not like my mom,s (thick and sweet). Mac & cheese good. Good luck. |

Sanders on Greenfield is pretty good. They smother the ribs in sauce. If you are from the suburbs and are too paranoid to go inside there is a drive thru but you have to order in advance. I go inside and walk up to the muthafuckin window to place MY order. A man walked up to me shook my hand and said "I wish more of you (whites) would come down here" he welcomed me. A lady chatted with me and gave me her number on another occasion.Anyways, great authentic soul food in a black owned restaurant-very unique flavor to the sauce.finger lickin fun. |

Actually I deal with the same racial fears and anxieties many other Americans deal with. Truth be told I am very cynical-feel like we have a long long way to go.....I very much agree with the criticisms of black American culture. I am actually more comfortable around people of African decent if I they are immigrants; middle class etc. Im not fake-so to speak. Encountered my share of immaturity and hostility from individual blacks but always ignore it and don't lower myself to their individual level...Ive encountered irritable rude high yellow pricks; loud mouth ghetto expletors etc. |

About the chicken hair. I used to cook at Slows, and some of the wings would have one or two of these feather remnants when they arrived. The wings are not small like most people are used to. They are way jumbo. Slows brines, rubs and smokes the wings in rather large volume (the place is always busy, as has been well noted on this forum). When I was there I would try to remove the little spires if I came across one or two on a wing, which is easier to do after they are smoked. I imagine that given the amount of work performed by the kitchen staff, and the speed at which said work must be performed on the line, this minor blemish is not often a priority. Anyway, people can remove them themselves--they are part of the skin anyway, and unless you eat like a caveman, you're probably going to avoid consuming all the skin on a large wing. It's the meat underneath that makes them great, and if they need a little prepping at the table before consuming, rest assured the added labor is no deterrent from the smoked poultry goodness underneath. For this blogger to have sent her order back is ridiculous, and I sense she is the type who does so habitually for minor or invented reasons. Slows never had a shortage of guests who somehow felt entitled to extreme royal treatment simply because they were paying (a very reasonable price) for food. And then there were those who thought they were clever enough to get out of having to pay for their food. I suppose the only thing sillier than this woman sending back her wings is not the child-like nickname she came up with for what naturally occurs on the animal she is about to eat, but that she deemed it notable enough to write a blog entry about it.
