On my way to cruise Woodward, I had the sudden urge, so I went to a Burger King on the way. (Was this Detroit or Highland Park?) The women's room was locked, I had to use the men's room. No toilet paper... had to use it standing up because of the tremendous amount of urine on the seat. All in all, it has to be the worst bathroom experiences of my life.

The best would probably be Cheli's Chili in Dearborn. Very clean, smelled good... even had a TV in there.

A weird question from a weird person: what was the best and worst restroom you've ever had to go in in Metro Detroit?

Let's go back a few years in Detroit history. If memory serves me right, Detroit had at least two UNDERGROUND men's rooms--one I recall was at the SE corner of Woodward and E Grand Blvd. Like a subway, you took the stairs down.
Another was downtown somewhere, and I think it was the downtown location where Johnny Ray, vocalist ( "The Little White Cloud That Cried"), was arrested one day for a little incident. He was in town for a concert, but the incident is remembered far more than the concert itself.
Come on, now, who remembers??? Ray36??(not that you had anything to do with the arrest).

the men's room in jacoby's is definitely on the "worst" list. the one at the gold dollar was similarly, if not more, terrible.

The worst I know is that by Grand Circus Park there is a bar by the PM station and you like walk down these stairs and only 1 60 watt bulb like lights up the entire basement and the bathrooms smelled terrible

The Hamtramck Pub on Conant a couple of blocks east of I-75 is no longer in operation but ranks (and I do mean rank) right up there.

The Men's room was right next to the stage. There was no door on the toilet stall and occasionally when someone opened the bathroom door the crowd would get a shot of a guy taking a dump. Yikes!

The men's room at the Ford-Wyoming drive in is among the worst, in my recollection.

The johns at Honest John's look good in the a.m., but it seems something horrible has happened in the men's room every day before 7 p.m. when I've been there.

"Come on, now, who remembers??? Ray36??(not that you had anything to do with the arrest)."

I remember the incident, Rock, and I think I'd date it about 1961 or 1962. There was another "Accosting and Soliciting" arrest around that time involving a guy named Prophet Jones. He was found not guilty in court, though, and the joke going around was that he beat the case by swallowing the evidence. Others words, not mine.

Twingo's and Slow's have nice bathrooms.
At least visually if you don't look for too long before you remember it's still a bathroom.
As for the worst.
Hmmm...the Old Miami come to mind.

I'll second Northern Lights for the best (women's) restroom. My wife gave me the full tour shortly after they opened.

The Bronx ranks up there in the worst category, although I love the lightbox thingy in front of the mens urinal.

In her May 1, 2007 column in the NYT, Jane Brody discusses this very question.
She gives a link to http://www.thebathroomdiaries. com/ where public bathrooms. worldwide, are rated. The ony Detroit ones noted are Ford Field (excellent) and Avalon Bakery (very good).

I actually have a quirky hobby of photographing bathrooms, especially the unusual.
Can anyone ID the location of the detroit bathroom below? I admire it's prison-like appearance.

"the downtown location where Johnny Ray, vocalist ('The Little White Cloud That Cried'), was arrested one day for a little incident."

I found a reference to a 1959 incident at the Brass Rail in Detroit, where Johnnie Ray was arrested for soliciting an undercover police officer. Ray was acquitted by a jury; evidently the jurors felt that Ray had been entrapped. Ray never set foot in Detroit again after that.

Best--Mexican Village Restaurant on Bagley. I walked in and asked if I could use it even though I wasn't dining there. They said yes, and when I finished, they gave me a free huge to go cup of Coke. My dad was with me and they gave him one too. Very nice people in there.
Worst---There is a McDonalds up Vernor near Grand Blvd. I won't even begin to describe what was in there; only saying that I think someone died in there. It was all over the room.

The micro trough at the Cadieux Cafe's men's room has always been a hoot. Last time I was there, there was a huge mound of ice in it and it was "melt the glacier" time. It wasn't seedy or anything but was kinda quirky.

In the basement of what is now DaEduardo next to the Fox is or was the best men's bathroom. Haven't been there under the new name but this place has had several iterations now. It used to be a Jimmy Schmidt restaurant, can't remember the name right now. But the bathroom was so cool I always recommended people check it out. There is a stainless steel chic modern floor to ceiling urinal among other things.

Was there a Detroit moviehouse that had two corkscrew staircases in the lobby leading down to the basement facilities? That was definitely the coolest bathroom I ever saw, impossible in these wheelchair-conscious days. If I remember correctly, I was there in 1990 for an erotic, all-night moviefest, including Clockwork Orange and Last Tango in Paris.

Harpo's is the most god-awful restroom I've ever been to. Absolutely no doors on the stalls, urine and crap all over the place, people doing drugs and having sex. It's places like this that keep me pee-shy.

Y'all should see Urban Scrawls, a documentary on bathroom graffiti.

One of the stars is Baretta from the Old Miami, rest his soul.

They contrast an actual graffiti artist with a Wayne State Psych Professor, it is absolutely a must-own DVD!

WHERE TO GO, A Guide to Manhattan's Toilets (Vicki Rovere, 1991) is a field guide to bathrooms throughout Manhattan.

Ms Rovere gives precise directions to over 450 bathrooms. eg:
UN Plaza Hotel
E. 44th St. (1-2 Aves.)
Go R, down the corridor to the elevators. Take one to the 2nd floor. Go L off the elevators; WR on L, MR on R.

This guidebook was particularly important in the era before there were Starbucks and MacDonalds, with their easily accessable bathrooms, on almost every other corner.

BORDERS BOOKS AND MUSIC HAS (ONE OF)THE WORST MEN'S ROOM!!!!!! And this is in the suburbs! It's 2 graphic 2 describe so I'll stop right here. Only a few of them have clean ones. Barnes & Noble, on the other hand, has decent ones. And of course DPS tops the list of the worst restrooms ever. And the teachers are worse than the students.

It has to do with your unremitting discharge of misinformation, cop-outs and useless excuses, that is what it is all about. Again you hijack yet ANOTHER thread with the "poor, woe is me, everybody is ganging up on neglected Urbanize" garbage instead of making a positive contribution.

The original question was Urbanize: "what was the best and worst restroom you've ever had to go in in Metro Detroit?" I am quite certain you have MANY locations, since you are so full of baloney you probably make "head calls" all over Wayne County.

In the unlikely event you do not have some you would like to share with all of us, go find another thread to whine in like "Word Association" or "This or That".

St. Andrew's Hall always had shitty bathrooms.

What was the name of the bar in detroit where the actual bar where you sit had a gutter on a horizontal angle attached to it that men peed in as they sat and drank without getting up to go to any restroom.

When I saw it, it was no longer being used, but was still there. Was it that Traffic Jam place?

Detroitteacher, I'll take back what I said about the teachers seeing that I've never worked @ Cooley before. AND I heard that Mumford-Jerry Bruckheimer's Alma Matter-is the (stuff). But I will stand by this, some schools I've worked in, the teachers are just as bad as the students-SOME of them.

Maybe I overlooked this thread, but has anyone mentioned JLA as well as the (outhouses) on Belle Isle? Some of the restrooms there STILL have troughs! Unbelievable!

Best-Fishbone's downtown/St. Clair Shores
The Beach Grill/Aqua Room
The Compuware Bldg.
Sears (Lakeside, Eastland)
Macy's (Somerset, Lakeside, Oakland Mall, Chicago, Ill.)
Barnes and Noble

Worst-Borders (most locations)
Some DPS buildings I've worked in over the last 12 years (2 many 2 name)
Burger King
Some Coney Island restaurants
Some gas stations (did I have 2 mention THIS one?!?)

Hey, some schools I've worked in, if the restrooms were heavily damaged, we'd condemn it 4 the rest of the semester. You'll be surprised which one(s) of these schools that shockingly never made the list.

I find it very disturbing that DPS would have bathrooms in such a condition. When I was growing up they were pretty pristine and kept that way. If they were messed to badly there would be hell to pay.

I take my first post back....Macomb Community College Library's basement was the worst bathroom in the area. None of the stalls have doors, and there are gloryholoes in the side dividers. Fucking disgusting!! I had a computer class in the basement and went to take a leak. I walk in and sure enough there are two dudes ….ahem…one pleasuring the other. It was the sickest most wrong thing I have ever seen. My memory has been scarred for life.

DAMN, dude. Sodom and Gomorrah. It's like that it here @ Henry Ford HS as well as other buildings I've worked in. Seeing ANYTHING like that in public will traumatize anyone. I'm sorry that you even stumbled across that, I'd be mentally scarred 4 life myself.
