As the Mackinac Policy Conference Big Five session began at 3 p.m., Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson seemingly was AWOL for the event, hosted by Paul W. Smith and broadcast live on WJR-AM (760). Smith began the program by declaring he was embarrassed that Patterson was "nowhere to be found." Just then, Patterson emerged into the room, walking toward the stage on a mission -- clad in a Hawaiian shirt and leis. Patterson's destination? He came straight for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, draping leis around the mayor's neck as Smith told his radio audience "Brooks is leiing the mayor." It was a reference to a WXYZ-TV report that revealed the Mayor and his wife had booked a suite in Maui at the same time Kilpatrick was supposed to be attending a pension conference on a completely different island. Kilpatrick later decided to skip the conference. The gesture by Patterson poked fun at the often rocky relationship between he and Kilpatrick. However, Patterson stopped short of kissing and making up with the Detroit mayor. |

And this was supposed to sway someone's opinion? Inform somebody? What's LBP thinking? Was it supposed to be funny or did I miss the humor in this? |

SB, why do radiclibs get pissed and nonplussed whenever they're the butts of any humor? They don't seem to mind dishing out theirs, especially their ad hominem variety. |

Kwame should send LBP a couple bottles of wine and give him some car keys. |

Brooks and Kwame are always taking swipes at each other. Brooks loves the bottle, Kwame loves to be Coleman Young. It was hilarious. |

It's hilarious until you realize how much the region has been lost because of decades-long petty, provincial infighting like this. When Metro Detroit should be competing against the world in this new global economy, Detroit has been fighting itself while everyone outside looks in and laughs at how ridiculous the situation is because it doesn't have to be this way. Too much ego; too much pride, too little cooperation. |

L Brooks won't pay for Kwame's buses or Cobo Hall. So, Kwame goes on vacation. Sure, why not? Should the majority of the voting public ever learn the TRUth about mass transit and large convention halls, we will all pay our fare share of the expenses and work to together as a region defined as Detroit, MI, U.S.A. |

Kwame did give Brooks a bottle of vodka, to which LBP said he wouldn't need to refill his water bottle. What is the harm? How many of you listened to the meeting on WJR? My guess is only a few of the posters on this thread. And that is the shame. If you had listened to the conference, you might have learned something about the difference between local government cooperation and humor. James |

LB does this at the Mackinac conference every year. One year he came in with a psuedo secret service entourage around the time of the media's inquiries into Kwame's security detail. |

Security detail was funny, but anytime someone can put a lei around Kwame's neck, AND get Paul W. Smith to look like a dumbass...I have to say that's #1 in my book. |
