Paul Chambers, who played bass for (among many others) Miles Davis in the renowned 1950's quintet with John Coltrane, was one of a great many sublimely gifted jazz musicians who came out of Detroit. I think a lot of jazz-band leaders, back then, loved to visit Detroit so they could check out the local guys and pluck out the talent. Jman, The Temple Beth El that Gistok refers to is the predecessor to the one your sister married in! Now the Bonstelle Theatre used for Wayne State Theatre Department productions, it is located on Woodward Ave., 1 block south of Mack, on the east side of the street. Here's the Temple Beth El history which includes dates for their various building locations. http://www.tbeonline.org/about us/history/ |

Larry, I put up the old address up for the former Detroit Lion #71. He lived there when playing for the Lions. The actor Tom Sizemore lived on Hamburg near Gratiot. I was surprised he went attended Austin and then transferred to Bishop Gallagher when Austin closed instead of DLS since it was close to his house. Maybe he was a "legacy" at Austin or Gallagher. I believe Sizemore was born in 1964 and would have made the final Detroit De La Salle graduating class of 1982 before they left for Warren. |

Spongebob, Did you remember if they moved after the riots or a little before ? Karras was cut in 1971 and I heard they were in Bloomfield Hills by then but that could be wrong. I want to say that he received the 7 year contract (unique in that era) and unheard of for a Linemen around 1966. |

Tom Sizemore graduated from Bishop Gallagher in 1979 or possibly 1980 (if indeed he actually graduated from there). My brother (class of '79) recalls talking with Tom about his plans to attend acting school in New York City. A couple more actors from area: Tony Award winner Sutton Foster went to Troy High School and graduated around 1990. Kristen Bell who plays the title role in the TV series Veronica Mars grew up in Huntington Woods and graduated from (Royal Oak) Shrine High School in 1998. And speaking of Royal Oak, Dondero High School alumni include activist Tom Hayden, Glenn Frey of the Eagles, and author Judith Guest. |

Larry, Dave lived in the Mack-E.Outer Drive area on Courville. His dad owned a bar around Jefferson and Lycaste near the original Chrysler Jefferson Ave. assembly plant. DeBusschere's address was 3827 Courville. I'm not sure whether the house exists anymore. I believe he lived there until the 1968 trade to the New York Knicks. Additionally, Dave was the star of the Detroit Austin Catholic team that won the 1958 Michigan Class A title over Benton Harbor's Chet Walker. Walker also had a good NBA career with mostly the Philadelphia 76'ers |

"Wasn't Frank Tanana another East Sider ? He still lives in Farmington Hills and went to HS in Novi." Larry, Frank Tanana was not an east sider. Frank grew up in the area east of Lonyo but south of W. Warren Ave. and more specifically at 7751 Dayton. That area near an old Chrysler Plant is the west side of Detroit. Frank's father was DPD. At the time Frank attended Catholic Central the school was in Detroit around Hubbell and W. Outer Drive. Later Catholic Central moved to Redford Twp. around 1978 or 1979 and finally Novi. The old Catholic Central became Renaissance H.S. for DPS. |

The number of musical artists, composers, songwriters, groups, and other entertainers is humongous. And not just Motown acts. Yesterday, Kslice posed the question, "Why don't any of these powerful people help their hometown more???" I was wondering if there was a valid reason for looking to them to do so. Is there something about Detroit, or being from Detroit, that played an irreplaceable part in their rise to their current status? Or, is this an alternate take of the old "they should give back to the community" song, whose lyrics suggest that "the community" gave something to them, even in cases where there is no appreciable evidence of such a thing having occurred? |

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) optionally lists entertainers by birthplace. Here is the URL that will display entertainers from the Motor. The list numbers about 1,000 individuals from Detroit. http://www.imdb.com/BornWhere? Detroit,%20Michigan,%20USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Said not to be always 100% accurate, Wikipedia can also list data about people. The creepy guy from the movie The Warriors (Warriors, come out and Play) and 48 Hours graduated from Bishop Gallagher. Tom Skerritt was born in Detroit and if I recall correctly he attended Wayne State. |

I find it interesting that Wikipedia doesn't list Sonny Bono as a musician. That seems about right. |

"Actually, quite a few good pitchers were born in Detroit. Pat Hentgen, Hal Newhouser, Milt Pappas, Billy Pierce, Dick Radatz, Ed Reulbach, John Smoltz, and Bob Welch. NOT BAD !" Pat Hentgen graduated from Fraser High School in the suburb of Fraser. Hal Newhouser was from the west side of Detroit and was a graduate of the old Wilbur Wright school. Billy Pierce was raised in Highland Park. John Smoltz spent some time in suburban Warren and then moved to Lansing for high school. Dick Radatz graduated from suburban Berkley High School and pitched at Michigan State before the reaching MLB with Boston. Bob Welch was from Hazel Park. |

Jjaba, Soupy has a son named Hunt Sales, in keeping with the bottled or canned sauces theme. Stromberg2, Hunts or Heinz? |

Pretty sure that Hunt was named after Huntington, West Virginia, the town where Soupy grew up. |

The Wikipedia list left jjaba cold, but thanks anyways. They listed so many people from Detroit that were not. Imagine if Los Angeles or New York City claimed all the folks who worked there, but grew up elsewhere. Bob Feller was NOT from Cleveland. Babe Ruth was NOT from New York City. Al Kaline is from Baltimore. Ty Cobb is a Georgian. Mickey Lolich is a certified Oregonian. Hank Greenberg is from The Bronx. Little Stevie Wonder is from Saginaw. jjaba rests his case. |

It is common knowledge that Wikipedia has errors - that fact is known. Well meaning (and even some not so well intentioned) contributors have often inadvertantly introduced incorrect information. Sometimes the errors are discovered and corrected - there is a process for that. Wikipedia is far from a final authority on anything. Grain of salt. |

Soupy Sales' sons Hunt and Tony are fairly well-known musicians. they were part of David Bowie's Tin Machine, and I know they've played with other big names. |

Maybe it should be called the IMTVDb - Internet Movie and TeleVision Data base. Jerome Bettis did OK in his TV appearances on "The Office" and "Rome Is Burning". |

Don't forget IHEARTTHED; a "very prominent Detroit figure" who shall remain nameless gave him TOP SECRET advice that was "one of the best pieces of advice" anyone has ever given him concerning checking something (another metropolitan city) out for a while and then go back to Detroit for comparison. He won't reveal who this "very prominent Detroit figure" is but I think it was either his garbageman over in Grandmont or his Third Grade teacher over at Edison Elementary School on Grand River and Longacre... |

Vetalalumni, good posts. Thanks. Jerome Bettis is a big hero at Mackenzie High School, deep on the Westside of Detroit. He IS the real article evidently. As for Ivan Boesky, he should have stayed true to the delicatessen his family ran on 12th St. for decades. His name went from Bo-es-key to Boe-sky when he got an office in a New Yawk highrise. Another local boy, Alfred Taubman, could have used the same advice. As they say, you gotta know the territory. There's something about street cred... jjaba, proudly Westside. jjaba, Westside Bar Mitzvah Bukkor. |
