Detroit bakery makes enough dough to grow.

Avalon International Breads celebrates 10th year with sale, plans to move to larger building.

Typical bad News writing. It tells us that Avalon is moving, and makes that the central feature of the story, but then gives us no details about that piece of news, telling us general info about Avalon instead. If I was editor that would have been sent back to the writer to keep working.

From the article:

quote:

They also expect to implement numerous energy efficiencies in their new space -- which they expect to be in the same area as their current location -- and to produce zero waste by 2012.

So it seems to me that they don't know where they're moving yet.

I can't wait to see how they produce zero waste. Mmm... cardboard pastries and edible coffee cups.

I had heard they were moving a block north to Canfield. I don't know where exactly though.

For Avalon, I would think the closer they can get to the WSU campus, the better.

The Avalon Bakery is outstanding. I am happy for their success. They set up in what was considered a very rough and risky setting at the time and led the growing revival of that area.

For those not familiar with the location, it is the former site of the famous Willis Gallery, a coop gallery that launched many of Detroit's artist, myself included. Avalon continued the art with their baking. I hope they keep a presence there.

In the past Avalon has considered the old Third Street Saloon site and the new owner of that property has been cold calling for tenants this week. Maybe the two of them will work something out.

I noticed that in the last week the Third Street Saloon and the Ice cream shop building have had the old signs removed an the graffiti on the sides painted over So there must be something going on.

it would be cool if they took over Agave's former digs...but from that whole fiasco it sounds like the landlord is somewhat of a D-bag

but I hope they can keep that location as a satellite store, it would really hurt the west willis area to loose that location...hopefully it will remain occupied by them or another retail tenant...a restaurant would be cool

Odds are they are in negotiations but haven't signed a lease anywhere and are therefore reluctant to name a location.

55 West Canfield was what was said at the Festival of the Arts today. This was according to someone working the 55 West Canfield booth.

maybe that's what they are telling people so that they will buy a condo there. Doesn't seem like theres a firm deal in place.

i'm not sure if all details have been worked out with the new space, so i'm not at liberty to say yet. however, i can confirm that they will be staying in the same neighborhood.
