Ok, this might be a stupid topic, but has anyone else noticed tons of huge moths around downtown? I live in Brush park, and they were EVERYWHERE this weekend..covering my car, my garage, and my condo. I thought it was just my building, until I read the detnews.com story about the tiger-mets game. It said that all of the seagulls on the field were eating moths in the park!

So THAT'S why there was an infestation of seagulls at Saturday's game. I was having a hard time watching the game because of all of the seagulls walking around the field. It was pretty funny.

Haha. I just saw a cicada outside my office window. I remember the last big hatch I saw, back in the mid-'70s. We neighborhood kids gathered their shells by the bucketful.

They're all pouring out of the old Acme Flannel Sheet Company warehouse. Helicopters are pouring mothballs into the caved-in roof right now.

Cicadas make a distinctive, loud "razzing" noise. It's kind of hard to mistake the two.

Speaking of infestations (minor threadjack here), there now appears to be a way of getting rid of the emerald ash borer. It appears to be similar in regards of how to rid an area of an infestation of gypsy moths.

They aren't 17-year cicadas, because they are not in the Detroit area (probably not in Michigan at all, despite what the news says). There are also annual cicadas, but it's a tad early for them. They look like this: http://tinyurl.com/25cfvh

Mayflies/fish flies are just starting to emerge. They look like this: http://tinyurl.com/26uhwr

I doubt they are gypsy moths, which are usually found in older woodlots or forests. But if anyone gets a photo, I can probably identify it.

I remember a few years ago when the flying ants swarmed Comerica Park. Those come out when the temp and humidity is just right. I haven't seen as many moths, but I did see tons of dragonflies at Harsens Island over the weekend.

Driving on that stretch of 75 near downtown saturday I'd say about 8 of them committed suicide on my wind shield and hood. Especially after Tigers and in Lansing lugnuts games, they love the lights.

We live 1/4 mile from Lake Michigan between Muskegon & Grand Haven and have had these tannish, 1" moths in our neighborhood, too for the last week or so. Not many on the beach - which is beautiful. I grew up in Detroit (Finney '66) - but these beaches, dunes & bike paths are heavenly. Visit anytime!

""We're buying plastic owls, putting them on the field until the players need it, and seeing if that works," Nabozny said. "But there aren't a lot of plastic owls around.""

Hmm. That's the best they've got, huh?

I've had a moth start flying around in my car 3 of the last 4 days. I don't think it's the same one because I keep letting the window down so they fly out. I almost got in accident the first time because I thought it was a little bat or something. I live in Lafayette Park and they have been really bad this last week.

Glad I saw this thread because I thought something was wrong with my building the last few days! I don't have screens on my windows and can't even leave my windows open right now because the moths have taken over. It's horrendous, really. (New Center)

Hello forum. I've been lurking around for quite some time, and thought I'd chime in on this. I live in the Millender, and killed about 20 moths in one of my bedrooms last night. I walked into the room, and it was like poltergeist or something (only it was moths instead of flies), with all these damn moths flying around. I complained to management, but like everyone else, I'm glad I'm not going crazy.

As an fyi, for those who are battling them in your house, I saw a "moth trap" on the 'net. Simply fill up a bucket of water, and put a light source slightly above it. The moths will be attracted to the light, and once they hit the water, it's a done deal. I'm going to try it tonight, and will report back on my "catch."

Ron,

Add something sweet (Karo Syrup, molasses, honey, sugar) as bait and it ought to be more effective. The stickier the better.

Another way to get rid of them quick is a home or shop-vac and a hose.

Luckily I haven't had that problem in Waterford. Spiders and such get them. No cicadas. Very few mosquitoes so far. Yet to see a mayfly here this summer.

I'm not an entymologist. But I did work at the Cranbrook Institute of Science as a biology/limnology student. I can pick the bugs out of a police line-up! :-)

Are they hatching indoors? How could you get an apartment filled with them if the windows aren't open?

Get a bug zapper! I love those things. The blue light and the zzzzzzzzaaaaaaapppppp remind me of summers as a little kid :-)

At the Millender, they just put my screens back in yesterday due to this season's window cleaning. However, I believe that there must be a gap somewhere that they are getting in through. Weirdest damn thing.

Thanks jrvass, I'm adding some honey as we speak. Curious to see the result.

Ron,

They should "stick". The rest of your plan should be OK. Plain water they may be able to climb on the dead bodies & escape!

Crazy.

I have no screens and I haven't opened my windows. They must be climbing in through tiny cracks as larva or whatever, and then transforming to moths inside. Whacky.

No way dudes. I killed about 30 in the past two days. But don't fall for their opossum behavior. One knock doesn't so it as they clearly liket o knock themselves around a bit.

So i stunned one threw him in the toilet thinking the water would take care of him but he got his tough ass out next time I went into the bathroom. So I don't know about that water method.

Yep. I can confirm that the water trap does not work. I went in my guest room last night (where the infestation was occurring), and there were three "guests" there. (This was at about midnight). I left them alone, thinking that my moth trap would work. Damn these little mofos. IT DIDN'T WORK! I guess I'm back to swatting them with my house shoe.

Those damn moths are freaking me out! I could not sleep last night due to the loud buzzing sound they make. And it's not like I can swat the damn things - I live in a loft with freakin' HIGH ceilings. I woke up this morning to silence. There was about 10-12 of them dead on my floor. I know my cat had a sleepless night on moth patrol so perhaps he took 'em out? (I have no idea how he got 'em but never underestimate a cat!)

It was fun, only a couple minutes, but once they got past the inevitable Hitchcock joke, we had some fun with it. I brought a couple moths in a jar, and told them I'd have brought a gull but they are too unwieldly and poop a lot. They got a kick out of that!
