I spent a summer before college working for St. Juliana/St. John Berchman. Part of my job was to help clear out the recently closed Servite HS. I remember walking through the halls & classrooms thinking what a shame. Anyone out there know what became of the building or have any pics or memories? |

For me as a kid and through HS, both were relevant. I went to Guardian Angels...1st thru 8th. Servite 9th thru 12th. St. Julianas ballfield...Cub Scout baseball. Done. Moving on. Both were under the direction of the same Servite nuns. Graduating classes from Servite in the early 60's were in the 140 "people range". St Johns was the grade school; Servite the HS. Servite drew teens from many grade schools. IF I remember right... $80.00 a semester for tuition. You changed classes for every subject. Very few lay teachers..and they were coaches. Morning mass required unless you skipped. The gymnasium was one of a kind. Springs under the floor. Lot of dances on that floor. Best moment..Alan Sheppard..first spit into space during science class as a freshman. Saddest moment...JFK death in 1963. Everyone knows of CLASSMATES.com. I have a couple of pictures from 2001. Is the structure gone now? |

I believe the Servite High School closed in l987, and it was run by the priests of the Servite order. When they left, the school closed. I imagine the building is still standing-maybe used by a charter school? |

The old school and church still stand. Here are some photos taken in December 2006. Thanks for the fine job taking the photographs, Maxcarey. A sad shame Applesauce, as yet another catholic school enrolls into our memories. |

Thanks again for the Servite pictures, Maxcarey. Fascinating yet depressing. Any more that you take of other schools are always welcome. |

Great job with the pics, Maxcarey. I knew someone out there would have some. Btw, would love to see some of it back in its glory. |

Thank you all, it is a hobby of mine to try and document all of these churches/schools the best we can before they all vanish. Here are a couple of other shots from the schools interior, courtesy of the school's website: http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=imstairs.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=imcheer.jpg |

Maxcarey, your quote: "Thank you all, it is a hobby of mine to try and document all of these churches/schools the best we can before they all vanish." Is a similar idea I had in mind when I answered the question: "Bulletmagnet, what do you like to take photographs of?" I explained: “These photos are nothing more then an archive, a last look at a disappearing moment in our Cities time. “ The cutting remarks: “Interesting. Some people as you know, have the ability to take a derelict building for example and capture a photograph of it that can show its beauty. Obviously this so far seems not to be your direction. In general it seems like most of your shots have been of rather negative images of the city even to the point of being very cynical (like your yard yacht series). I guess what I find the most interesting is that you take pictures of what you see without trying to frame it in any way or with little regard. Not necessarily a bad thing..." was in response to my photos. Funny how some people can turn the jaundiced eye. Keep up the fine work. |

Bullet, Thanks for the appreciation. I similarly enjoy some of the pictures that you bring to the board. I guess that I can somewhat understand why some folks could be rather negative and/or cynical. About a year ago, I took great pride in photographing many of the landmarks in my families old neighborhoods. The churches, the homes, the stores, etc. For me, these buildings and time were something I grew up on and they had their own life. As I got older, I had to see and experience them for myself. When I showed my aging relatives my pictures, many looked at them politely, but didn't really want to look at them. I didn't understand why. I thought that it would rekindle all of the stories and people from another era that I had grown up with and it really did not. Then, about a month ago, when traveling around my own neighborhood (SCS, Harper Woods, East Detroit) it hit me that many of the stores, schools, etc. that I grew up with are all gone or have changed. Not necessarily for the better or worse, they just aren't there anymore and their replacements don't have the same meaning (for example, the Eastland Twin Theatre and Lowe's). It was then that I understood my relatives seeming lack of appreciation, they, like me had fond memories of what was and not what is and preferred to keep them there. That's fine with me, I'll still take pictures of things here and there both near and far, obscure or not. I enjoy it and I'm glad that there are others who do too. I have always been intrigued by history and personal narratives and I always will be, I guess. But I have also come to understand the other side of the coin and can see why someone would think that it is a waste of time or accentuating the negative. I can appreciate that opinion, but its not why I do it. |

And with that, since there was a mention of both Notre Dame and Bishop Gallagher in Harper Woods: I was fortunate enough to be able to tour Notre Dame last summer and snapped these quick shots: http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000954.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000962.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000974.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000968.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000970.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000982.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM000969.jpg Some from Bishop Gallagher taken last month: http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002498.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002500.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002506.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002502.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002501.jpg http://s138.photobucket.com/al bums/q242/maxcarey/?action=vie w¤t=IM002505.jpg |

Bulletmagnet and Maxcarey: My thoughts exactly....I started documenting city landmarks and sites back in 2001 when the city celebrated its 300th birthday. My thought was that my grandparents and great-grandparents left very little in the way of documenting what life was like in the city when they lived here in 1901 so I wanted to capture the sites in 2001 to pass down to future family generations. As I learned about the buildings, the people who commissioned them, the businesses that used them, the architects that designed them, and the artisans that enhanced them...through taking tours and reading books and doing research at the Burton Historical Collection, that effort has turned into 40 or so photo albums organized by type and/or location plus a small library and many filing cabinets/archive boxes worth of information. And I now have such an appreciation of what a legacy we received from our forefathers and need to preserve!! Churches are one aspect that I've covered fairly extensively. And especially Catholic churches since I'm Catholic and so feel comfortable attending Mass one or more times at a church in order to take all the photos I want to capture the ornateness or the details. Thanks for doing what you're doing and for sharing. While I don't post a lot of photos online (because I'm a holdout...I still shoot film and don't have most rolls digitized), I do share my photos by bringing the albums to the DYes Picnics and occasionally to other DYes functions. |
