Thank you to all who post with the intention of educating others on Detroit's history. I especially like all the old maps that many seem to have access to. I know some are in the Burton Historical Collection, but are these early maps only in private hands or are some of them available online for browsing?

Map Division, Detroit Public Library, Main Branch, Woodward and Kirby, Detroit.

Many U.S. libraries have maps for other cities, or can order them on inter-library loan, in case you're not in Detroit.

Detroitnerd, thanks. I live in Waterford and work in Southfield and am very familiar with the Main Branch of the DPL. I was just wondering how people are able to post images from these maps without either having them in their personal posession or having access to digital images online.

Okaly-dokaly. But it's a real trip to see the originals. The level of care and detail that went into them never stops flooring me.

The U of Michigan has the Sanborn fire insurance maps online, available to local libraries who subscribe to their service. Contact your local library and see if they do; if so, then they'll give you the url and the password.

The best maps I have seen are in the Leonard Simons Room at Wayne State. That is probably the best collection of Detroit history I have seen next to the Burton.
