Detroit's only fully fenced in dog park will open next Sat. 7/28/07 on Cass Ave, just north of Canine To Five, which is located at 3443 Cass Ave.

More details including hours and cost to come next week.

Congratulations. That's a big step forward for the Midtown/downtown area. Great news for dog owners.

A dog park in Detroit? No way. There is a whole legion of Ann Arborite dog owners up in arms over that city's lack of a dog park.

I'll have to take a look. How is it fenced in? Cyclone fencing or something aesthetically pleasing?

The back, alley facing fence is 6 ft. high chainlink with barb wire at the top. The front, Cass facing fence is 8 foot high wood. The substrate is grass....we'll see how long that lasts! There will be a small shaded area, fresh cold water, some play equipment. It is not huge, only 7500 square feet, but dog park attendees also have the use of our daycare space, which is an additional 6000 square feet.

Also, the dog park Grand Opening will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11. As I said, more details on that to follow.

Good. Now all those Birmingham-ites can bring their dogs for a run since they were shut out in their own burg. Har!

The dog park will be FREE tomorrow night as we are trying to get as many dogs in as possible before the grand opening on August 11. We are still working out the kinks (like where to put the pools, how to clean up most effectively, etc) so please stop by with your vaccinated dog if you can!

Are their individual fenced small runs for the dogs that aren't as friendly to the other dogs? I'd love to bring my dog but unless she has her own fenced area she will try to be a big bully to the other dogs. I wish I could get her out of that.

No, it is one large play area, sorry. There are some "time out" kennels, but they are only 50 and 100 square feet.

How old is your dog?

You CAN get her out of that behavior. Get the book "Cesar's Way - The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems" by Cesar Milan and train yourself to be the pack leader, NOT her.

Cool! Maybe now the dog walkers in my neighborhood will have another place to let their dogs pee and poo instead of my lawn/shrubs/flowers.

Ya know dog urine kills grass, and leaving a hot-steamy-dog-loaf behind on somebody's lawn is disrespectful.

I still love dogs though.

Blondy she is a five year old boxer. She still acts like she's 1 years old though. I took her to training last year and I still couldn't get her to play nice with the other dogs, but she does very well with the dogs that she grew up with. Do you have any tips?

What I'd like to see, somewhere, anywhere, is a dog-free neighborhood.

I love dogs, but too many dog owners turn a deaf ear to their pets' bad behavior.

One big reason I left Morningside.
The dogs there outnumbered the residents at least two to one.

I wonder what Detroit's pet population is these days.

Anyhow, has anybody ever heard of a dog-free neighborhood?

I have seen pea gravel used at other dog parks and boarding facilities. It would probably last longer.

Though, if you go with mulch have you called Detroit DPW about donations or other local landscapers? They probably shred dozens of trees a day and might be able to help.

BTW...this is great addition to the city. Thanks for all your hard work.

Hey blondy, what shots are needed for the dog park?

I live downtown and I have a 7 year old, and I have always kept her up to date up on her shots. The last year or so I haven't gotten her some of the 'yearly' shots anymore since they say that 'yearly' shots aren't good for older dogs "every" year (unless necessary).... I obviously get her rabies, and instead of the yearlys, I get her a Titer test (which tells if any of the yearly are needed)... cost more, but worth it. :-)
