Sunday newspaper readers in northern Ohio today are tipped that a long weekend in Detroit is a blast.
quote:

Plenty of people seem to be enjoying themselves these days on the banks of the Detroit River, along a stretch of the city’s newest downtown attraction, the beautifully paved and landscaped RiverWalk. What we witnessed that night was as good a tableau as any to illustrate the new, visitor-friendly face that’s being put on one of the Midwest’s oldest and most challenged cities.

The Blade's former travel writer and his wife last month "came away with some very favorable impressions of Toledo’s nearest big-city neighbor."

In this wide-ranging article, Mike Kelly plugs the jazz festival, Arts, Beats & Eats, Grand Prix and even the State Fair. He frames those events and our recent Sporting News designation as the nation's 'Best Sports City in the context of bigger stuff:
quote:

There are signs of a new optimism in the city, and hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in renovation projects in the metro area, particularly downtown. New businesses, restaurants, and shops have opened, and a number of vacant commercial and industrial buildings have been converted to residential units, with thousands of condos, lofts, townhouses, and apartments created over the past five years.

There's lots more worth checking out in his piece -- illustrated with this snap + 2 others:

Surprisingly enough, the amount of these stories with this similar tone of touting Detroit's recent achievements is becoming old news to those on this forum--I guess that is a good thing!

I remember reading the Detroit News travel section 20-some years ago touting Toledo's then-new riverfront area, museum and zoo. What goes around, comes around.
