So the past year I've been pretty much out of the forum and out of Detroit...long story. So I thought I would leave it up to all you forumites to tell me what I've missed in the last year or so? What developments are currently under Skipper's Rule? Who is Rasputin's latest target...is Rasputin still alive? Supersport, Gistok, Danny (Ghettoman), Lowell, and of course my sweetheart SKULKER...hey I haven't almost run over you in months. |

Supersport has a job now, not so many posts, Quicken is going to move downtown any day now, The Denby tars are all getting together, whatever and wherever that is, The mayor is in the hot seat again, but it will have no effect come election time, Karl is still against abortion and trainman can still turn a thread into a rant about busses in fifteen words or less. There is still no cheesecake factory in the CBD despite the incredible opportunity that represents, the GAR,Lafayette,Brederick tower and David Whitney buildings are still empty, the Book-Cadillac is coming along nicely despite the cyber-sidewalk supervisors, there is a mysterious crane outside the united artists building that has everyone's undies in a bunch. The Tigers were great last year, are back to their old habits as of now. Bums still panhandle in the CBD and Mike Ilitch is buying everything south of the boulevard, so now is a good time to sell if you have anything. Oh yeah, everyone has finally had enough of our cars and are buying Japanese cars almost exclusively, and it's been hard on the area. |

ItsJeff and PSIP passed away, both suddenly. It's been a sad, thoughtful, and bittersweet year. Skulker HATES it that we talk about inane stuff like some guy's girlfriend being afraid of Detroit and shit...but he's too busy making sure the Lafayette Building demo goes as planned so he don't post no more. I gave him his turntable back, because it was no fun runnin' the joke from one side any longer. Sport's got a girlfriend. Dial finally opened his store, Mezzanine. Cafe had a baby, but you didn't hear that here. As far as we can tell, Karl is still against abortion along with any form of tolerance within the Republican party. That's about all I can remember for now. Oh yeah, most of us are quite happy that Karl Rove wanted to spend more time with his family. Who knew he had one? |

Well, Karl still rants and provokes, Craigd still pastes, but Rasputin took a powder. Some of the gnarly old folks, like Cheddar Bob, Fury13 and Ravine [no offense, guys] remain. Miss Cleo (has she really been here that long?) jabs from somewhere Up North. And Kathleen keeps us grounded with Herstory... Seems to be more opinion and less information offered these days, often the same opinions repeated over and over. Some folks are fixated on one thing or another and simply MUST convince the world they are right. And, yes, a guys girlfriend is afraid of the city. "Good Night, and Good Luck" |

Woo boy Collective, you've missed a doozy of a year. The forum has continued to evolve. There's been a departure of a large number of old timers, which is an interesting story best told off-line. The above posts mention a lot of the specific goings on, but in general there has a huge influx of relative newbies and the tenor of the forum has shifted quite a bit from the insider discussions of yore to being more of a venue for history/nostalgia/speculation. There are still glimpses of greatness, though, and you can usually count on someone pointing out the latest articles about Detroit development. Lots more young 'uns these days, it seems, and a very unexpected French contingent. The boys in the band still get worked up over a chick who seems age appropriate and pulled together, so it might be said that Oakmangirl is the new Velma. There has been no discussion of her jugs yet, however. Spelling and grammar have taken a real turn for the worse, and there are a lot more "experts" who will argue with you about anything, even when you are totally right. Oh and it seems most posters don't actually live in Detroit, so small business development is not really news anymore, except to get a "yay, wish I could go there" from forumers. Or an "I told you so" when something fails. Lowell has achieved fame and, just maybe, fortune as THE authority on all things Detroit-web-based. Which makes perfect sense, if you've ever experience the discussion boards of the local dailies. Expect him to turn up on a local media outlet near you soon! FSC seems to have withered and died in the aftermath of Itjeff's passing, although Sporto carried the torch for a good while afterward. Oh and I am still the smartest poster here. |

Hi Collective, and welcome back. I'm one of the relative newbies and am guilty of contributing to the increase in historical and nostalgic posts. I miss living in Detroit, Michigan and all it entails. This forum partially fills the void and provides both an inlet and an outlet. I'm not a youngster (born in the early 60s), I try to avoid arguing, and though I was born and grew up in Detroit, I left Michigan about 20 years ago. The threads about developments in Detroit I find very interesting, but I typically have nothing constructive to contribute. |

Hey Collective, good to have you back! Some of the oldtimers don't seem to post anymore... Ilovedetroit and his nemesis Metrodetroitguy... Merchantgander, Rasputin and Brian also dropped from the radar. Jjaba was in Japan... mostly the EASTSIDE of the country! The Riverwalk has opened, and people just rave about it. Campus Martius continues to do good. The Book-Cadillac renovation/restoration is on track and has received a lot of attention, as has a new luxury condo going up on top of the BC parking structure next door. A LOT of speculation has been happening as to when and where Quicken will eventually move downtown (if the housing market collapse doesn't stop them). Peter Karmanos has been wooing Quicken owner Dan Gilbert to the Hudson's site, while Mike Ilitch has been wooing him to the Statler site. In fact (you better sit down...) Mike Ilitch even sent J.C. Beale restoration folks over to the United Artists Building/Theatre and had them put a new roof on the UA in hopes of luring Quicken to the area. Mike Ilitch has been a major source of topic on this forum also due to the fact that an announcement for a new Arena site may be coming in the next year or so. He almost owns all of the property behind the Fox. So the major speculation on this forum is that he'll build it between Park and Cass. Ilitch is also currently in negotiations with Masonic Temple to take over all bookings and engagements for Masonic, in exchange for infusing money to pay off Masonic's significant outstanding utility bills. They were almost bankrupt. The Ilitch's are also buying up a lot of Midtown between MotorCity Casino, Masonic and the Foxtown area. So a new arena could go there if the last west Foxtown landowner holdouts don't want to sell. MGM Grand Casino will have a grand opening on Oct. 2 for their new $800 million casino. MotorCity will open their new Hotel, theatre and convention space in November, and Greektown's new Hotel/Parking tower and casino expansion (over 1/2 of Lafayette) is starting to dominate the Greektown skyline for a 2008 opening. The DEGC and city wants to make Harmonie Park and the area east of it into a new Paradise Valley. The DIA has been closed for many months for a November grand opening after spending $161 million in major expansions and renovations. Highland Parks beautiful McGregor Library may reopen. Preservation Wayne has added the remains of the Oriental Theatre (W.Adams just west of Park) to their theatre tours, and Michigan Building owner Tony Pieroni (who has been posting quite a bit lately) has decided to do partial renovations of closed off parts of the former theatre space for future tour expansions. But besides that, nothing much is new... except I am still the 2nd smartest Forumer after Dialh4hipster.... |

"There's been a departure of a large number of old timers, which is an interesting story best told off-line." very diplomatic of you, dialh ;) however, i would not say the fsc has withered and died so much as it seems to be just smaller, quieter groups with less fanfare. oh yeah, and it seems some dude's girlfriend is afraid of detroit...but (unfortunately) is that really new news? |

I showed up in 2000 and then disappeared 2002-2003. Many of us have our "dark ages" like Collective. Karl is catching up on Supersports record posts. And we have a newbie named Urbanize who has zoomed into over 1000 posts just since February 2007. But he's been beat up a few times by oldsters who say he just likes to hear himself post. He's been on hiatus for at least 2 weeks now... And we now have a good reverend who's an atheist... go figure? |

I'm not exactly "new" but my posts-per-month is quite low. But I've read several times already about "how DetroitYes forum has changed", usually said in a negative way. Sooo....What exactly were these topics of discussion, these "insider discussions of yore?" By the way, Collective, as you can readily see, there is a new skyline picture of Detroit on the masthead. |

quote:Its just a riff with SS People with riffs against people they only know via online forums crack me up! Ok, I can agree with not much has changed, as opposed to nothing has changed. People have come, gone, returned, and gone through spells where they rarely post every since the forum was started. Most of the topics remain the same, many become repetitive at times for long time posters, and there has been and always will be "riffs" between parties who post. So, not much has changed on here. As for Detroit, tons has changed over the past year in terms of development. |
