Wow...an 8-7 vote...I didn't realize there was that much opposition to the plan

So what do you all anticipate will happen with the Wayne County building? I don't feel very confidant that the owners will find another tenant for that one...it's a very appealing building, but to a small class of entities, mostly government...

The Detroit contingent voted entirely in opposition.

Is there a real reason for the opposition? The deal sounds like a good one for the County - maybe not so hot for the WC building owners, though.

The WC building owners already got something like 3 times what they spent to refurbish it. I feel no pity for them, but for the building itself.

Could an abandoned building downtown be purchased and renovate for about the same price as the purchase of the Guardian building?

No way Jose, Guardian building is
No.1 It is Irreplaceable at any cost under min. of $500.00 per sq ft. (It does now need some upgrades) Bldg sq ft = 775,000+/- Price = $14,500,000 +/-, cost per sf = 17.70 This is very cheap for a priceless building!
No 2. It is probably crown jewel and the best architecturally designed building in the city.
No.3 It is a long term savings to the citizens of Wayne County, (hopefully it will be managed well).

...except the rentable space in the Guardian Building is IIRC 385,000 sq.ft.

We had the whole 32nd floor at one time. Spectacular view. I assume the big wigs as well as Ficano's "staff" will reserve it for themselves.
I still have a key to get up to the roof. I wonder if Robert might be interested.

You mean the rentable SF is only 50% of the total building SF? I've never heard of such!
This was a wise and shrewd move by Wayne County.
Facts of Guardian - check out the video too!
From: http://www.waynecounty.com/new s/2007/Guardian.htm
Finished in 1929, the 750,000-square-foot Guardian Building is one of the highest towers in Detroit and among the tallest brick buildings in the world.

Ok, The_rock, let's hit that roof. Must have been an unbelievable view from there, let alone the 32nd floor.

IMHO, the Guardian would be much more likely to attract business tenants than the WC building, and there's the fear of how well the County will maintain the Guardian.

have to love the 'divide' in the commisioners office. there can't be a non-emotional reason for the distinct divide, math is math right? politrics.
at least they got the 8 votes.

If Wayne County moves constituent services into that building, it will get trashed.

From the link lefty posted:

"The building was only six percent occupied when the owners purchased it in 2003. The owners have spent millions in renovations, including new elevators, windows and heating system. It generates an annual profit, as does the parking deck, Samson said."

6 percent!!! My god...I knew the market for commercial office space downtown wasn't great, but...jeez...

Thejesus... the other 90+ percent were MichCon employees. When DTE purchased MichCon back then, they eliminated some employees, and moved the MichCon folks that they retained to DTE owned space and sold the building.
