No! But Ontario plates in Michigan will be very common. I think the provincial and federal sales tax combined is about 16% so their buying power increases by 10% when they cross the border. Not bad! |

You know you are in a recession when your currency is at a 30 year low. Makes it easier for the gov't to pay back debtors and citizens with cheaper money. |

Interesting times we live in. The sinking-like-a-rock dollar is a bad sign in a way, but also means American companies that export things (like, oh, I don't know, cars) should have an easier time since they will be cheaper to the people outside the U.S. who are buying them. I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about this, except so far the price of Labatt's hasn't gone up here, so right now I don't object. I always wondered why, no matter what the relative position of the U.S. and Canadian dollar, it costs a lot more money to buy Labatt's in London, Ontario (where it's made) than in Detroit. |

Simple, government taxes. Bibs - Our combined tax rate is 14%. One of the biggest "new" markets is used cars. Used cars sell for average of about $4000 less in the US. People have been buying them like crazy and importing them back to Canada. |

GDP includes monies spent on the war action, so they doctor the figures in order to claim that we're NOT in recession. Lefty is right, he didn't claim it was the official definition... |

Soon we will have a unified North American currency that will replace the dollar. |

One would expect to see some movement on the tunnel toll at least (considering the City of Windsor owns its half of the tunnel). There are more important questions: what about the Canadian money at par specials, i.e. Monday night at Mexican Village? Will they replace these with American money at par? what about places that refuse to accept Canadian change? Let's face it Canadian change is probably going to be more valuable than American change soon. Will Oakland Mall have to expand its parking lots? Heck, with the dollar at par, Canadians can move up to Somerset. |

AIW - When the dollar was really strong, Americans were going to Windsor to buy cars. Then the manufactures put a stop to that! So now Canadians are buying used vehicles from the US. We certainly have a few used vehicles here. If you are an Canadian citizen, I would highly suggest you purchase some American dollars and put then in a CD or some other type of investment. When the dollar is stronger, then you will reap a nice return on your investment. I was really stupid and did purchase Canadian dollars when I was able to get 50% for every dollar. |

Bibs: you mean that you "didn't" purchase CADs, right? Bibs does make a really good point, it makes little economic sense for Canada to have a high dollar vs. the US Dollar. Ultimately, the Canadian Dollar will decrease (though probably not to those earlier lows). However, it may take awhile: some economists suggest that the Canadian Dollar may top out at $1.05 USD. |

We can only hope the Canadian Dollar keeps appreciating, along with the other world currencies. More export trade, more tourism (both foreign visitors and stay-at-homes), more cross-border retail sales, and perhaps more film-making in the U.S. I hope the Canadian Dollar hits $1.50 U.S. |

Alan, the inconsistency of the US border continues to be a significant deterrent. If this was 1992, metro Detroit would be hopping with Canadians. Also, let's hope Michigan is not pinning its economic future on a $1.50 USD Canadian Dollar.... |

Remember back in like '01 when you could get like $1.60 CDN for $1.00 USD? Man that was great. It made Canadian money seem like monopoly money when we went to the bars over there. At least it is only even at this point. P.S. The highest that I remember it being was 1.67 for 1.00 |
