It is located on 7 Mile rd ( North Side ) just before Southfield Rd. I took a picture of it at . I'm not sure what they are doing with the building as it looks gutted from the back. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This was a nursing home back in the late 80s and early nineties. Fox2detroit recently did a problem solver report on this building because copper thieves were really having a good ole time with this massive building. The name of the nursing home escapes me.

What does that mean? "Just before" coming from the east or "just before" coming from the west?
Besides, if it is close to the Southfield expressway it is not in Redford.

Yes, that is the Arnold home, formerly a "rest home" for the elderly.

I just checked Mapquest for ( 18520 W SEVEN MILE RD ) and looks like Mikefive and 56packman are correct. It is not Redford ( sorry ) and is west fo the Southfield Freeway. I checked the Arnold's Home's survey records from the State and they had a terrible rating, which may explain why it was shut down. Thanks again for the help!

I hope like hell I'm right, I grew up along 7 mile (between Evergreen and Lahser) and drove past the Arnold home thousands of times on our way to the Lodge freeway.

What was it before it was the Arnold Home? Jewish Home for the Aged, maybe? Yes, here is some history on this:

As Detroit’s Jewish population moved northwest, Borman Hall, a modern facility that included married housing, opened in 1968 on Seven Mile Road and Sutherland. In 1971 Prentis Manor, an existing nursing home in Southfield, was acquired. These facilities became full scale nursing homes. Facilities for the well elderly were also needed.

Prentiss Manor closed a couple years ago and has been leveled.

Is that the only nursing home in that stretch of 7 Mile? If so, it's crazy how blighted that place became in such a short time...

That's what standing empty with no upkeep will do for a building, especially with copper miners going in and taking apart all the water and heating facilities. It doesn't take long.

Any ideas on when it opened? The only documentation I could find quickly related to 1976.

I believe that is a different building, not the Arnold Hall. Sunderland is 4 blocks West and a much small building. "Sutherland" is a street that is near and parallel to 10 mile rd.

I do have a picture of the back of the building I'll post at some point. There are walkways that connect the buildings - the walls and roof are gone on these, leaving only the floor. There are desks and even a piano that are sitting out on these walkways.

Not sure how old the building is, but I have the Arnold Home listed at 18520 W Seven Mile in my directories as far back as 1935. The next oldest I have is 1925:

Arnold Home for Aged Men
15270 Grand River
Stella M. Logan, Matron

My Great-Aunt Leone was a resident there for most of her adult life. She had a developmental disorder, and her sister, my Grandmother, had her set up there. She wasn't supposed to live past 15, but managed to get to 81! I remember going there as a kid in the 70's. The front lobby had been converted into a common room with a huge old console TV. I distinctly remember all the old folks huddled around watching The Price Is Right, and the saturation was all screwy on the TV, making everything all color washed. Always creeped me out.

My uncle lived there for the last year or so of his life (he passed away in 2001). I visited him there and the place always seemed clean, secure and well maintained to me. I didn't know the place had closed.

Weird...I just passed this place for the first time yesterday - and already there is a thread about it!
