Thefts fuel crime rise in region Metro Detroit's 2006 surge bucks nation, but city on pace this year for drops in major categories. Ronald J. Hansen, Norman Sinclair and Mike Wilkinson / The Detroit News Across Metro Detroit, thefts and other property crimes soared in 2006, driving up the region's overall crime and bucking the national trend, according to FBI figures released Monday. The latest FBI numbers also confirmed that Detroit continued a two-year spike in crime in 2006, finishing with the highest murder rate among the nation's largest cities. But preliminary figures kept by the Detroit Police Department suggest this year the city could post double-digit drops in every major crime category and could end with less than one slaying per day on average. http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.d ll/article?AID=/20070925/METRO /709250377&theme=Metro-Crime |

I don't understand including New Orleans in that ranking as clearly its population is not over 300,000.. (Message edited by detroits_own on September 25, 2007) |

Hmmm, I just read that overall violent crime is up 2% nationwide, so I'm not sure this is just a local phenomenon. Regardless, its not a trend in the right direction. |

Well, it boils down to this: do we as a nation spend money to protect citizens from possible terrorists attacks, or do we spend money protecting citizens from criminals in our own backyards? It's apparent that the federal government has set its priorities. Funding for states and cities is scarce. |

Jiminy Christmas....temporary dyslexia had me thinking that this thread was about "fuel theft". Speaking of such things.....how come, with gasoline prices at or beyond $3.00 per gallon, we don't hear about fuel theft? It happened all the time during the oil embargo of the early '70s....when gasoline prices shot all the way up to .65 cents per gallon. Curious in SW Ohio |

^ For one thing, many gas stations don't turn the pumps on anymore until you pay first. They've wised up. |
