The route is one of six new daily round-trip routes granted today by the U.S. DOT. Each of the USA's six traditional carriers — American, Continental, Northwest, United and US Airways are the others — were awarded one of the six routes. http://www.usatoday.com/travel /flights/2007-09-25-china-flig hts_N.htm |

Maybe GM should offer the striking workers free one way tickets if they are willing to take a job in a plant in China. |

At least it would replace the flight coming and going to Britain. |

I think Danny's referring to British Air's decision to drop their Detroit-London service. |

NWA has been trying to get their route from Detroit to China for a few years now. Glad to see it finally happen. |

Didn't NWA have a direct flight to Beijing already? I think this is in celebration of a Detroit to Shanghai direct flight... so it's not like NWA doesn't have flights to China period. |

This is a different between a direct flight and a non-stop flight. |

All of the Detroit to Beijing routes on NWA.com appear to go through Tokyo... |

You know, with this areas population loss...a little immigration from China might be the answer to some of our problems. Immigration has done wonders for Dearborn and Southwest Detroit. Maybe a planeload a week (400) for the next five years (100,000) That would fill some empty areas of the city. Seriously! |

What about 400 Mexicans from Florida a week for the next 5 years? Sounds like a win-win situation. |

Try again... I just went on NWA.com and found a Detroit to Beijing flight for October 3rd (it was the default time frame)- non-stop, direct or whatever the correct term is. Flight #11 leaves DTW at 3:20 PM and lands in Beijing at 9:25PM 18 hours and five minutes later. No mention of Tokyo, Minneapolis, Amsterdam or any other destinations in between. |

Smog, Just checked their flight schedule, flight goes thru Japan. Plus 18hrs is way too long of a time to China w/o a stop. |

Smog: If you look under the date in the picture you posted it states "1 Stop" that one stop is Tokyo Narita airport. NWA had non stops from DTW to PEK prior to 9/11 since then they have opted to route the flights via their hub at NRT, which they are allowed to do under the authorities that they currently hold. This enables them to feed traffic to China from their other US gateways (SEA,PDX,SFO,LAX,and HNL) and pick up local traffic in Japan. Northwest could at any time start flying PEK and PVG non stop from DTW using their current authorities, they have just chosen not to. The new authority that they were granted MUST be flown non stop. Regards, C.A.Quail |

Caquail, thanks for the clarification. The only reason I was somewhat adamant about this was that I've flown POST 9/11 from Detroit to Beijing (it cost me 75,000 WorldPerks miles in 2002 but well worth it!). I ended up calling up an NWA agent to clarify and I was told that it wasn't that long ago that NWA DID have a non-stop flight. Why their website is so cloy about listing Tokyo is also beyond me- why not just SAY there's a layover? |

And another.... The Wayne County Airport Authority said China Southern Airlines will fly daily nonstop flights between Beijing, China, and Detroit starting in March 2009. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20070927/BUS INESS05/70927027 |
