I'm showing our 9 year old son the Riverwalk for the first time and then going to the game afterward. Suggestions for $10 to $15 dollar parking? Greektown? Harmonie Park? |

I would suggest parking in the underground lot in Grand Circus Park, $15.00 is a deal considering its location to Comerica Park, and taking the people mover to the Ren Cen. Have fun. |

Do the Reverse of what conman suggests. Park at the Rivard riverwalk plaza for free. Walk to the Ren-cen. Take the people mover from the Ren-Cen to the Grand Circus park station. Total cost $1 per person. |

Ndavies, that is a great suggestion. Kids love the People Mover, and the RenCen is a very cool to a nine year old. |

compuware is a good bet if nothing on the street presents itself... plus that way you can take your son for a walk through greektown and maybe an icecream at astoria? |

Can you park on the streets for free during a game? Seems that maybe you could only around the riverwalk area. Go with Ndavies suggestion. That was going to be my advise as well. |

Overall, the Rivard Plaza parking idea is great. What time does the lot close though? Also, it may be bit much walking for my son at 10/11 back to Rivard from Comerica... Same question about Compuware, what time does it close? Thanks so much for all your help, I know I can find some of this info myself if necessary but this is very helpful! |

I think that the Rivard lot is just a regular lot with no gated access, at least that is what I recall from the last time I was there and I don't think that it had any posted hours per se. |

Keep this under your hat. but you can park on the street for free after 6pm (if it's a legal parking spot.) |

With a 9 year old in tow, I would tend to park closer to the ballpark (probably Compuware) and take the people mover to the Ren Cen before the game to see the Riverwalk. At 10:30 at night, you're gonna want to get to your car quickly after the game especially on a school night. Enjoy your night out with your son! |

Park at the Cobo roof so you can incorporate the People mover into your day. I have to imagine he would enjoy that and you don't have to deal with downtown parking when it is busy with traffic. |

i have parked at comerica as late as 1 or 2 am and not had a problem. I would assume that any time you were there with a 9 year old son, it would be fine. Compuware is $6-8/night and has good DPM access... |

I would recommend Astoria - any kid (and adult) will love the display of sweets. Campus Martius to look at the fountain (get desert at Astoria and eat it at Campus Martius. Or if you want lesser deserts with awesome owners try happy cream on Monroe. |

You can also park in Greektown's garage. Get the ticket validated in the casino at the machine so you don't pay a dime (it takes 1 minute from the door to the machine). Take the people mover to RenCen and back to Comerica. The garage is in between. Your car is safe and secure, the walk is easy, and only $.50 a person to ride the People Mover each trip. |

When I was in Detroit over Labor Day I parked [after 4, 4 p.m. ;-) ] at the parking garage on the east side (I think that's it) of the RenCen (I forgot the name of the garage) but it was only $4 I think. I took People Mover. This met my main objectives: 1). Indoor parking, 2). Cheap, and 3). (drum roll) I wanted to take PM to and from the game. Maybe #3 was a higher priority then #2. I wanted at all costs ;-) to avoid the bit of parking 4 blocks from CoPa on a surface lot and paying $15. I did well. (Message edited by emu_steve on September 25, 2007) |

Compuware, definitely. I park there quite a lot after 5pm or weekends. Close enough to the people mover, easy to Greektown, stadia, C-Mart, etc. Dirt cheap, and there's a DPD mini-station in the garage if you're squeamish about safety of persons or your rig. |

Would not recommend parking at Greektown Casino as they won't let your nine year old into the place while you try to validate your ticket and then you're stuck paying big bucks for parking...Also parking on the street can be a risk-reward game- I had my van window smashed and inside trashed in January right across the street from Opus- not good... |

If you are THAT close to Campus Martius, go to Happy Cream on Monroe...across the street and up a block towards Greektown from the Hard Rock Cafe...the people that own that place are some of the most darling folk in the whole downtown. One benefit of parking at the RiverWalk is that your EXIT from downtown will be much quicker...you will avoid most of the 'burbanites who only know those 'three ways' to get to the freeways! No worries on the late timing on the Riverwalk, I've been down there at all times of the day...including stupid wee hours...and it is always well-patrolled and populated with nice people enjoying the city. I've never, ever encountered anything negative on the RiverWalk...it is a magical place. |

Of course, this is only relevant IF you're going to Wednesday's final game...heh. You didn't exactly say... |

Went to the game tonight and parked right around the block from Copa for 1 dollar(in the meter). After the game drove by the riverwalk(started to rain) then went home. Time from end of game to driveway...15 minutes. |

You can park for free [after 6 as mentioned above] on Fort on streets around the Anchor Bar. There is a PM station there. That will also give your son a longer PM ride including the dramatic stretch above the river as it circles around JLA and Cobo. Coming back will be short. With all the money you save, you can buy him ice cream at the Big Boy stand in the park. As for Greektown Casino ticket validation, mentioned above, I think he will have an issue getting his son in. |

I parked for free last night on Farmer and Monroe between 8pm and 9pm. Came back to my car an hour later to find the window smashed out, same with the other cars parked right there. So much for the Compuware security that was standing right in front of hard rock when I left, and was still there when I came back. I know it can happen anywhere, and I know it happens in all cities, but it makes me angry when it happens in what is suppose to be one of the better areas of the city, and when security is on the street one block away. Not the end of the world, but irritating. |

Rivard Plaza is a clean well lit place. We were there Saturday and there were security folks and 3 guys cleaning the walk. It was cool to see tourists and local folks together. Lots of parking. |

We ended up at the Compuware garage, took the PM around to the RC, walked up to Rivard Plaza, back to RC, then walked to the park including Big Boy shakes. Will continue to patronize Astoria and will be sure to try Happy Cream one day. The Greektown garage is a great plan sans the wee one... |
