www.mirsnews.com/alert.php?ale rt_id=126 ----------------------- Michigan House of Representatives Business Office Director Tim BOWLIN this afternoon laid out the implications of a state shutdown for both members of the House and their employees. For lawmakers and staff it means that payroll will stop at midnight on Sunday, Sept. 30, and the lawmaker's Oct. 4 paycheck will be reduced by five working days. Bowlin advised lawmakers in a memo that payroll would not be resumed until an FY 2008 appropriation is enacted. Other impacts for lawmakers and House employees: - Health care coverage will continue through Oct. 31, but if the stalemate stretches beyond that, coverage will cease. - Life insurance coverage and 401K contributions will cease effective Sept. 30, 2007 Look for complete coverage in today's edition of MIRS. |

I've been talking to numerous non-politico (what I mean is, folks who would never post on this forum) people, and they all seem to think this shutdown is never going to happen, and that they'll work it out. They think this is all posturing and a deal will get brokered, "as it always does." I wonder if this shutdown, despite news coverage, etc. will smack people upside the head of the realities of this situation. I'm starting to think the masses have no idea what's coming to them. |

Watch, at the last minute, the Republicans will cave-in and agree to 4.3% income tax and the Democrats will agree to $950 million in budget reductions. "Two Penny Jenny" will say that's what she wanted all along. 2008 is an election year and we'll probably forget all this by next budget year when the economy will be better and Michigan will have excess $$$. All of this is political, not related to any realistic spending budget and gets a lot of press but most of it is worthless drivel. |
