If this is too personal I can understand, but I'm wondering what Michiganders do for a living these days. Perhaps everyone can give a generalization of the industry they are in without being too specific. I'm a designer in advertising/marketing, I don't have any automotive clients. My household income is sufficient for a middle class lifestyle, but right now it requires we both work to sustain that.

my main source of income is as a freelance consultant (cultural issues), but i have a second job that gives a steady check and health benefits. I have also published poetry from time to time, usually to buy toys. (i am not a fan of poetry, but it's a skill I developed somewhere in college)

What schools have a degree program in Street Prophetizing? Sounds interesting.

I'd be a Street Prophet, but gravity is not great enough to keep both my feet on the ground!

I think General Gadfly, Rogue Philosopher, and Mystic Prophetic Teacher fit best...but economically I am a Consultant and Critic in the Home Entertainment Electronics marketplace.

(once in a while, I'll mount a flat-screen TV for you if you're really cool...and I do this killer 'calibration' of televisions and projectors that extract the absolute best performance out of any set...making most TVs look like 'windows to the world' with accurate colors, and no problems at either end of the illumination spectrum...bright whites and deep blacks are usually clipped and crushed making involving picture detail vacate the experience!)

I am a tweak, and can busy myself fine-tuning most anything that can be improved. I stayed in the Hifi business because it is pure fun...and turning people onto great reproduction of music and video in their own homes is a total blast.

Plus, I'm an entrepreneur...an idea hamster, as it is now called...and will soon be engaging a few of my ideas to spark more than a few jobs in this city.

(oh yeah, and I'm working on my haiku poetry...)

Various things including motorcycling, but for a living (for a living! Who knew?) I work in live theatre - in lighting design and special effects/pyro. I enjoyed lighting the current "Escanaba in Love" which just opened at the Gem.

I live in Detroit so from reading the local papers (and some here) I am obviously unemployed and living an existence on government assistance since I feel I have a right to entitlements.

J_stone, which Gibraltar Trade Center? The original one downriver, or the one in Mt. Clemens? I love elephant ears.

For the record - and you could have guessed - I teach college students. (And one of my names is "Scott", just to close that loop.)

I will leave the two comedians off for the time being. Unless they want to be included in "Entertainment". :-)

I'm with you on that, Susan. I always felt the proper direction to run, when dealing with a burning building, was "away from". But God love those who have to do the other.

I think I'll put you and DH together in Automotive, even though you may do different things. It is still based on the same industry.

I'd rather be included in Entertainment...I'm 'trying' to get Audio/Video to that status after more than fifteen years of a very unstable technological marriage through a new on-line magazine called AudioVideo INsanity...launching December, if things go right!
