Here we go for another year - The FBI released the numbers a little earlier this year. These are for 2006.

As usual I will be happy to answer any questions on specific cities/rates etc but my commentary will be limited since I am just listing the number.

This first pass is for all cities. I will also list for cities over 100K and over 250K so that there can be a little more perspective.

All rates are based upon a per 1000 residents calculation so really, really small places may be skewed high since 1-2 crimes has a huge effect on the number:

For all cities I will list the highest 100 and will also list Detroit with its number in ranking(of course the 100K and 250K lists will show more of a real comparison)

If the category was rape, Richmond would be like the guy in Blazing Saddles: "Rape, murder, arson and rape." "You said rape twice." "I like rape."

Richmond apparently likes murder.

Two different Richmonds. The FBI .xls file has one line for State merged across all cities. I am too lazy to fill all of the cells for state and city.

I can list the state of those if you want but there are 15-20 Richmonds in the US.

Murder Rates for all Richmonds. Some look pretty good but you have to choose your Richmond wisely:

City Murder rate

Richmond 0.41
Richmond 0.39
Richmond 0.06
Richmond 0.03
Richmond 0.00
Richmond 0.00
Richmond 0.00
Richmond 0.00

So, in a nutshell, Detroit residents are still contributing to the depopulation of the city by murdering each other at the 2nd highest rate in the nation...

Well yes and no. The stats are for murders that occur in the cities, not the home city of the victim.

But in the case of Detroit I would say that the vast majority of victims live in the city but I wouldn't say that given a loss of 10-15K residents a year the 400 murder victims is a significant percentage of the population loss.

Mackinaw Island makes it because the population is so low (490) so it is skewed by the 2 rapes that occurred there.

Add in that it is a destination city and the population does not represent the true situation. Consider it a statistical issue more than a crime issue.

Sanduskey has `2700 residents and had 13 rapes. I wonder how manyu of those were 'Cedar Point' rapes.

No question about it but that is not the point I inferred from your first post. Of course I think the property crime and assault contribute more than the murders due to those being much, much more random crimes.

From just this list alone, I couldn't truly make an educated guess (It does give fuel to start a shit throwing contest with the almighty suburbs tho, lol). I'd have to see how midwestern cities are historically represented on the list.

It could be something as simple as midwestern municipalities tending to be smaller than cities in other locations (just a hypothetical, I don't know this to be true!). Smaller midwestern municipalities would make it more likely for their stats to be skewed by random isolated incidents, thus more representation on these lists.

Or it could be the culture. In my personal opinion, I think blaming culture is dangerous and more often than not misses the true problem completely (thus misses the chance to implement a meaningful solution), but it is possible. Who knows?

And that in a region like metro Detroit, auto ownership is a necessity of life. So it becomes the crime with much opportunity.

And AAA estimates that upwards of 50% of aut theft in Detroit is fraud.

Having high aut theft is one thing but having high auto theft and beng a dumping ground for fraud makes the problem even worse.

What explains Detroit's weak showing in the all-important category of Larceny? #57 among cities >250K. Pathetic.

Theories:

1. Lots of folks don't bother to report thefts
1a. ... because they know the cops won't recover the items or even come out
1b. ... because they don't have homeowners/renters insurance and don't need a police report for filing a claim
2. All the good stuff's already been taken.
3. Our thieves are lazy slackers and their union contract says they get paid whether they steal stuff or not
4. Our criminals don't mess around with petty larceny crimes, they're good enough to commit crime at the next level (murder, robbery, ...)
5. They know it was their crack-head neighbor and they'll just steal the stuff back when he passes out.
6. The stuff that got ganked was stolen to begin with
7. There's too much respect for private property rights here

Is there anywhere that shows *where* in Detroit all the murders occur every year? Back when I lived in Baltimore (1986-1994) I remember seeing a map of all their murders one year and >90% of them were in 2 areas of the city that were maybe 4-6 square blocks each. Crack central! I suspect Detroit is similar.

Common sense. Different localities handle crimes and crime statistics differently.

The more personal the crime, the more likely to be reported. Violent crimes (except rape) are more likely to be reported than others. Robberies (armed or unarmed) stand a much greater chance of being reported than thefts (burglaries, etc.). Homicides, usually, have bodies that are noticed. They, naturally, get reported.

Rapes are a mixed bag. Perhaps as few as 10% or less get reported. Lots of reasons are put forth for this, and this crime can be handled and reported widely differently, depending upon locale.

If a police department (Detroit's) takes an indifferent attitude toward property crimes, crimes in such a city will tend to be vastly under- or unreported. Reported crimes, IMO, are nothing other than the MINIMUM crimes for that community. I suspect that few, if any, crimes are ever over-reported.

DRJeff>There is a Google Earth from 2004 that I was linked to from this forum. The murders in Detroit go border to border with only a couple of areas where there was a cluster. I'd have to see three or four years and overlay them but I'd bet they are mostly the same. The murders in Detroit are everywhere, not just confined to one or two areas.

Will agree with Livernois on larceny and reported crimes. If you look at the larceny rates some of those cities have a lot of college students who will report larceny (Austin/Columbus) and in areas that have crime but also have people who report it (Stockton/Corpus Christi). I've lived in San Antonio and can attest to the high larceny rate there so it does not surprise me. I would say it is worse in San Antonio than when I was growing up in Detroit but probably now. I'd imagine that when people get things stolen these days, they just figure there isn't much use calling the cops.

IMO I think you can look at what we know is reported (murders) and come to the conclusion that cities over 100k with the highest murder rates, also have the highest crime rates in almost every other category. I'd bet the true numbers would have Detroit in the top ten in every single category and probably in the top five. Baltimore (Also lived here), St Louis, and Philadelphia are the three biggest cities outside Detroit with what I would call a "crime epidemic" but those medium sized cities of Flint, Camden, Gary, and Richmond are very scary places.

Vernon, CA (Pop. 93)
Lakeside, CO (Pop. 20)
Industry, CA (Pop. 875)

All are pretty high due to the low population. I did a .xls file on all data but in a real analysis there is no way the first two cities would be included.
