Pretty simple. The idea is to tax gasoline out of existence or dramatically reduce its use. Same thing they've been doing with cigarettes...

Some people will disagree with it because they think global warming is a myth, and others will disagree because they want to keep using gasoline without paying more for it...

This probably will never pass in its current form because the general public is either unconvinced about global warming or doesn't think its potential effects are anything to be alarmed about...

Why doesn't he attack the real problem, cars that don't get enough mileage to the gallon, or that are not gasoline-dependant? Wait, that would mean that he would be asking the Big 3, and their workers, to change. So, rather than doing that (and losing the possibility of being elected again even though he's in his 52nd year of congressional service), let's attack the gasoline price instead.

Sort of a thread-jack, but why is it that Michigan has some of the longest serving members of congress, yet we get no pork? It would be nice if Levin, Conyers and Dingell would stop tilting at windmills and concentrate on capturing federal tax dollars instead of allowing, year after year, Michigan to be a donor state.

C'mon guys, where is our bridge to nowhere!?!

Higgs, you have to remember that they were in the minority party since 1994. And only Dingell was a chairman before 1994. So now that they are finally all 3 chairmen, let the bacon begin... oink oink!

Except I doubt that there's ever been much pork coming out of the House Judiciary Committee (Conyers).

I agree Fredgarvin. I'm sick of the automakers and Dingell saying increasing fuel economy will kill the auto industry. It's not revolutionary technology and their talking about phasing it in over several years anyway. Quit crying and bring back the electric car.

Let's quit crying and bring back mass transit...or go to mini electric autos as per Italy. How often do we need an automobile that will do 0-60 in six seconds?...or 40-80 in three?...or need an SUV? Gotta love those GP, Birmingham and Bloomfield soccer moms driving SUV's with one hand, on the phone with the other, doing 75 mph with their kids in the back seat strapped into car seats.

Higgs, you want Pork? Inviting political corruption where it already runs rampant is a very bad idea for the populace. Besides, pork is artificial prosperity, and therefore unsustainable in the long run.

Finally I can approve of something that a Dem proposes, but the extra funds collected (the difference) should be entirely dedicated to mass transit, etc.

Finally some sense. Americans for some reason feel they're entitled to commute 70 miles a day and that it should be affordable.
We need to change our consumption habits as a nation, not try to force industry to adjust to them.
WTF does it matter if you get 30 miles to the gallon instead of 25 when you drive 500 miles a week? Whereas if you drive 70 miles per week, your gas consumption is negligible.
Our suburban-subdivision hypercommuter expressway lifestyle is not a sustainable way of life.

Great idea! Lets destroy whats left of the domestic auto industry even though we have nothing to replace it. That will help the region greatly. We won't need mass transit because there will be no jobs left to commute to.

Who cares about the region when we have the whole world to care about? Many problems in the world make Detroit's seem small. Don't worry too much Detroit will get through it. It already has for the last several decades. The auto industry is never going to save Detroit anyways--give it up! It's time to finally realise this and move on to new things.

I support the gas tax because it will do less harm to the Auto Companies than raising the CAFE standards, which virtually all the turd nominees for president have supported.
There is just too much irony in this nation of poison crap from China, outsourcing like there's no tomorrow, and employers like Wal-Mart, the feds will still step in to the "free market" and screw with things when its politically convenient for them.
Everyone is mad about gas prices(because they turn every day into a road trip). So what does DC do? Stick it to those stupid auto companies! Everyone outside of Detroit hates them anyway. Placing the blame on the wanton voters wouldn't help much come election day.
Even with a gas tax, people will still need/want cars. I know I will.
The alternative, raising the CAFE standards, will put an undue burden on the auto companies just as they seem to be regaining some sense and responding to what buyers want and need.
