On now - Anderson Cooper's CNN show 360 airing a segment on increasing violence - the focus is on Philly - which they just called "Murder City, USA"

posted here due to short notice and tangential relevance to the D

Doesn't seem fair to Philly. Cities over 100K people with higher murder rates than Philly are:

Detroit
Flint
Birmingham
Baltimore
Richmond
Richmond
New Orleans
Newark
St. Louis
Oakland
Inglewood
Little Rock
Kansas City
Washington
Cincinnati

If they are looking at cities over 1MM then Philly is the highest but seeing as there are only 10 it doesn't seem to fair to Philly.

They said Philly's already had over 300 homicides this year. I didn't know guns (all guns) didn't have to be registered in PA - that's part of the debate. Concealed carry permits are easy to get and cops aren't allowed to ask why one is being sought.

The shooting of three armored car guards prompted the story. Two, who were retired cops, died. The shooter got away with $$ and is being sought.

That is about on par with the 406 they had in 2006 give or take a little.

Any stats on how lax gun laws correlate to murder rates?

Another part of the debate is the charge that stiffer gun laws are a shortcut taken in order to save money on enforcing laws already on the books (or lax gun laws provide an excuse in lieu of adequate enforcement funding) - e.g. "murder is illegal, but that doesn't stop it"

Gun control has never been proven to have any correlation with murder rates, either within the United States or internationally. Great Britain actually saw a 40% INCREASE in handgun crimes in the two years after they banned handguns!

Some countries with total bans on civilian firearm ownership (like Cuba) or have extreme gun control (like Russia) have higher murder rates than the United States, while some countries with large numbers of civilian-owned firearms (Canada, Israel) have lower murder rates. Within the United States, the National Academy of Science did a review of all available research concerning concealed carry laws and found them to have absolutely no effect whatsoever on murder rates. The safest states in the country in terms of violent crime rates (like South Dakota and Vermont) have virtually no major gun control beyond the NICS background check system.

Gun control is about as effective in reducing murders as the "war on drugs" is on reducing drug use rates.

In other news, there are more ways to commit homicide than with a gun...
