I'm sure even those naysayers among us will have to find this form of journalism appalling: http://www.dispatch.com/live/c ontent/flipside/stories/2007/1 0/03/3_RANDOM03_ART_10-03-07_D 10_FD820NL.html?sid=101 I used to live in Columbus, Ohio, where the Dispatch publishes. I urge anyone and everyone to send a letter to the editor (letters@dispatch.com) calling out this idiot. You don't have to say nice things about Detroit, but don't lie about it. My response: I am writing in response to a column by Amy Saunders on Detroit (Oct. 3). Ms. Saunders writes that if a Columbus resident dislikes his or her downtown, “you’ve clearly never been to Detroit.” What is clear from this column is that Saunders obviously hasn’t either. She claims that she called Detroit home, but my money is that if she did live here, she was a suburbanite who didn’t come downtown. I say this because she regurgitates well-rehearsed, inaccurate stereotypes about the city. Now, anyone can defend his or her city, but as a journalist who has lived in the Short North and now lives in southwest Detroit now, I can speak with authority. I also have lived in Seattle and New York, and I wouldn’t leave Detroit for anything. Its collection of 1920s architecture is amazing. Its art museum is world class. Its downtown home to gorgeous Campus Martius park and plenty of restaurants. Sure, shops downtown close at 6 p.m., but so did those in downtown Columbus. Sure, Columbus is great if you like minor league baseball and hockey, but we have all the major sports. As for all of these wig shops Saunders ignorantly writes about, are those next to our Ben & Jerry’s? Our Jimmy John’s (there are several downtown, be specific)? Hard Rock Café? Our half dozen Starbucks locations? Borders? Our casinos? We’ve got them all. Not that you’d mention that in your column because you were overlooking the facts in order to make a point. Thank you so much, Dispatch, for allowing your neophyte and ignorant reporter to write with authority on a subject on which she clearly knows nothing about. She makes you and your city look as bad – if not worse – than she has painted Detroit. DAN AUSTIN, Detroit |

Columbus has nothing on Detroit. If it weren't for OSU and the Statehouse, it'd be a podunk shathole. |
