New York Times calls Columbus "Cool" and it sounds like it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09 /23/travel/tmagazine/10remix-c olumbus-t-1.html?bl&ex=1191297 600&en=fa60d0db4e9bba6f&ei=508 7%0A Detroit sure has its Jimmy John's, condemned buildings and casinos, and it's also cool in its own way. That tongue-in-cheek column was in the humor section, entitled "Flip Side." That page also had a story on the nickname "Chuck," a blurb on the Ebay item of the week, a cartoon called Speed Bump and something about Will Smith. It's interesting how seriously Detroiters take any jokes! I heart both towns. The People Mover ride from Greektown to the Joe overlooks many cool sites! Our very own Broadway and Times Square are cool too! Off to go on a nice long stroll tonight... (Message edited by andrewski on October 06, 2007) |

Welcome to the forum Andrewski! Yes Detroiters are very defensive about their town. Columbus too is a nice town. One of Columbus's greatest landmarks, and for over 40 years its' tallest building... the 47 story Leveque Tower, was designed by Detroit's own architect C. Howard Crane, who's main claim to fame is that he designed more theatres and performance venues (about 250) that any other American architect (such as Detroit's legendary 5000+ seat Fox Theatre). Ironically he didn't design the theatre housed within the Leveque Tower. |

Get a life? Well, that wasn't necessary. Most people who defend Detroit have lives that are very involved in the city's "losing" battle. Do you have any idea what kind of determination is required for that? It doesn't involve sitting at home scratching your ass all day. |

Was just in Columbus . . . what irked me was that the vibrant inner-city neighborhoods (Short North, described in the NYT piece, and German Village) are things we could have had with a little bit of effort. Detroit's certainly a more interesting place culturally, but central Columbus is livable and walkable. Partly this is due to the big university, but that's not the whole story. |
