There is surely some good news in this article, but there are also troubling facts in the article, such as the large amount of short-term borrowing. In the long-term, that could catch up on the city. At the same time, having a balanced budget would be a great step in solving a very difficult problem. |

They are "cash flow" balanced but at the expense of taking on more debt to make it happen (a gimmicky gov't wording trick). So that actually means they are not a balanced budget as it can be inferred that their expenses are still greater then revenues. |

A balanced budget is required by city charter. Isn't it required by state law for all Mich cities? Funny how balancing a gov budget is always news, but for a person or family it is just doing our job. |

Except that most people don't balance their own budgets. Americans are sinking in debt. Credits cards, adjustable rate mortgages on homes they can't really afford in the long run, zero down cars, student loans, etc, etc, etc. The average American doesn't "balance their budget" they just re-finance it out a couple more years. No surprise our governments behave in the same way. It is as Mencken once said some 80 years ago...

This is NO BUMP Itsjeff, Is KING KWAME finally steered flat broke Detroit away from receivership? His actions could make him be re-elected as mayor by 2009. |

There is a bump Danny. Just to spite you. When you go to sleep to night, it will bump again. And then there will be another bump tomorrow and the day and the day after that. And there is nothing you can do to stop these bumps for the bumps were created by an International Jewish Conspiracy (IJC on the Nasdeq) more powerful than you. Sweet dreams. Oh yeah...BUMP! |
