I have a real problem finding good publications for local news. The Free Press and Det. News are basically AP wire reports and human interest stories. Metro Times is good for culture, but Jack Lessenberry is the only writer who regularly talks about social and political issues. I think I get the most news out of reading this forum.

Where does everyone else get their information?

I'm in NY and I get all of my Detroit area news from this website. A fine job too. When I do click on a News or Free Press story it is as a link from this site. By the way, there seem to be a very high amount of spelling errors in the online versions of those two papers, Free Press and Det News.

I try to watch as little local news as I can, except for Fox2 in the morning (gotta get that traffic and weather). So much of it is "crime of the day" garbage.

If you want to try even a little more, keep the TV off and listen to WWJ 950. Problem solved.

Even in Ottawa we get Channel 2, Channel 4, Channel 7, Channel 56 and Channel 62 from Detroit. We get more Detroit news than Ottawa news....

Oh, and we also get Detroit SWAT. Is that news?

Speaking of the news, who were the Channel 7 news ladies that had a very public spat a few years back? What became of them?

My apologies for the thread-jack...

Our local papers and news channels suck.

Crain's Detroit Business, Detroit Yes, and Model D are the best sources.

Try out the Michigan Citizen, which has very good local news coverage. It comes from a grassroots perspective and highlights a lot of activity in the city. Regular columns from Grace Lee Boggs and Shea Howell.

Overall, the best news source in the CBD is Footless Mike, the Dread in the Wheelchair with Heaven in his Eyes.

WDET, under duress.

ClickonDetroit.com since they seem to be the ONLY TV news that gives any energy to the city.

Freep...but yes, they have gotten weak since the sale...thank goodness my favorite columnist, Susan Ager, is still there. (I've got to bring her up to raise Jelk's blood pressure occasionally) Plus, they've kept Heather Newman around, too...she rocks.

I dunno...I spend time here because our collective reporting, with error correction and other services provided through our friends at Hotfudge, is nearly instantaneous...and with usually MULTIPLE perspectives can be much more fully reported.

As a thread develops, errors are weeded out...so it is largely a self-editing storyboard.

Cheers from my watchpost,
John

Thanks everyone. There were a few new ones listed that i was unaware of.

Gannon, you've got me going with the Susan Ager comment. That woman makes me miserable. I can't imagine dedicating my life to something that is as devoid of substance as her column. i've seen potted plants that contribute more to society than her.

Lilpup,

It's been a while for me, too...at least three weeks or so. He is around the Market on Saturday mornings often...I think he lives in the apartments north of here.

Sometimes I'd see him outside that McDonalds on Mack at I-75...and usually near the stadia on any game day. Mike ain't no dummy, and is fascinating to talk with...his outlook is precious, and he can be wickedly funny.

I hope he's OK. He is the weariest beautiful wandering soul I know.

Emuaaron,
Glad to be of service. Susan is absolutely great, and I've found her to be a 'loveability' litmus test. You just failed...might have to get some supernatural intervention to kick start that heart of yours!

I'm sure you particularly liked the column Ager wrote about showering nude with her husband. The image of that is something I've needed therapy to get over...

LOL, and I've given her grief over the colostomy article or whatever that procedure is called (I'm absolutely SURE Jelk can chime in here...he's squirming just reading these words!).

Hey, that column alone brought the importance of that to many people's attention, however graphically.

How did I miss the shower scene article?!

What you got against people lovin' and washing?! Where's the harm in them multi-tasking and saving water and time? Heh.

Therapy sessions are Saturdays, upstairs at Vivio's...ask the gorgeous brunette barkeep with the dangerous dimples where the group meeting sits.

Then there's the column in which Ager, desperately trying to convince us she's a free spirit, confessed to stealing an Italian woman's undies off a clothesline, and wearing them.

It's a career based upon oversharing...

Free Press and News are good starts, but have gotten a lot "fluffier" over time.

WWJ in the car.

Also use www.mlive.com which is collection of news stories from non-Detroit area cities but generally can put together a good collection of Detroit, Michigan, and national news.

Ah-h-h, hence the reason I LOVE her so.

When someone shares something you don't want or appreciate, it is polite to merely say thank you and excuse yourself.

Issuing judgement and gossiping about it is unhealthy for you...worse simply REMEMBERING these things that annoy you.

Do you think you could do better with those synapses?!

This site's excellent. WWJ is OK. Freep and News necessary evils. The typos are more numerous than ever. Lessenberry in the MT on Wednesday, but also his Michigan Radio Web site at http://jackshow.blogs.com/jack /

For business features not found in Crain's, DBusiness is pretty good. dbusinessmag.com.

Curt Guyette, et al. are pretty darned good at the MT.

Local rags can be fun to read for the petty local crimes and even more abundant typos.
