This week, the MSL jackpot for the MegaMillions is up to $340 Million. Now I've always wondered what I would like to give back to the Detroit area if I hit that much cash- even if I took the instant payout. What would you do? |

i've always planned on doing similar should i come into a large amount of money. there's no way i could spend that much cash in my lifetime, so i feel i should do some good with it. just a few ideas that have crossed my mind: -restore a building, possibly one that otherwise would not be economical to do so. preferably a theater, (the UA maybe?) cause i have a soft spot for them. -start a business, better yet, help others start their own. -set up scholarship funds. -set up an ongoing fund to finance improvements to parks and youth activities. i guess it mostly depends on what the biggest need is at the time. i really don't want anything to be a one-time gift, i would rather have something that carries on for years. I've long admired what the Mott Foundation has done for Flint, although no lotto winnings are going to reach that scale, I'd love to have at least some impact far into the future. Some of that's ego, some of that is realizing that the area's difficulties are not going to end tomorrow. |

Agreed Gistok! The Michigan is by far my favorite of the Detroit movie palaces. If I somehow won enough money, I'd restore it over the UA in a heartbeat, naysayers be damned! |

Foundations to help with the inner city would be my first priority and then scholarships to all of my alma maters- from elementary school on up. Somehow empowering people to escape their situation and elevating them to a point where they can succeed would be the best use of money that I can think of. |

An idea I always dreamed about if I hit it big is setting up a college tuition program for the city similar to Kalamazoo's. I'd have my attorneys strike a deal with the state, that all of the money would be turned over in one lump sum to the program tax free, leaving me with 10 percent for myself. All Detroit residents who attended school in the city would have access to free tuition at a state university for their first four years in higher education. It's pie-in-the-sky thinking, I know, but so is winning this lottery. |

Actually, one thing I WOULD do is pay to have the city's traffic lights timed. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to have one light on Cass (and myriad other streets) turn green as the light one block ahead turns red. Adds at least 10 minutes onto what should be a 5-minute commute. |

On a more rational scale (than restoring the United Artists Theatre)... I would buy the Broadhead Naval Armory from the city... restore it, and provide free space for all of Detroit's historic preservation/urban planning groups, such as Preservation Wayne, Cityscape, The Parade Company, DetroitYes, etc. And then get a liquor license and have the FSC have weekly meetings in the lounge overlooking the Detroit River and Belle Isle. Have summer riparian picnics, and watch the fireworks from there. I would also get the Antiques Roadshow to come to Detroit in the large hall at the front of the armory. OK... I'm putting down the crack pipe now... |

Gistok, one of the realty companies in Ann Arbor built a nice space near the river to house nothing but non-profits. It would be nice if one of the bigger players in Detroit would do something similar. NEW Center If I was set and didn't have to work anymore I'd like to try this for Detroit (unless someone @ Detroit Synergy wants to do it first) |

Lilpup, My favorite Detroit Non-Profit is the Skillman Foundation. Their foundation has grown incredibly, and they have assets in the hundreds of millions... all for Detroit alone! God bless them! Another philanthopist who is dearly loved by Detroit institutions is Maggie Allessee, the wife of Bob Alison (of radio fame), aka Robert Allessee. Maggie was a widow before she met Bob... with something like a $150 million dowry!! She has been very supportive of the Detroit Opera House restorations, as well as WSU and other institutions. She is also a Preservation Wayne member. One can only dream.... |

I think the only way the Ford Foundation will ever be Detroit-centric again is if control of it is wrested away from the New York set by somebody from here. Cox's recent prodding got a little bit of funding sent this way, but not much, relatively speaking. |

I would buy old Cass Tech and renovate it into artists studios, lofts, and light retail on the ground floor. Included in this would be a Cass Tech Museum, with displays and documentation on all of the notable alums. My Dad's display would be the largest, then mine. Would $355 mil be enough to do this? |

I would also love to have an athletic scholarship or two at CCS for those of us who loved sports in high school. Art school has a way of curtailing athletics... and playing kickball in the sculpture garden at wee hours of the morning isn't much of a substitute. LeoQueen, for $355 million, I think you can almost get Kwame to help you build that museum brick by brick... but just your dad's half. Your half of the museum is gonna take a lot more. |

No one mentioned the Lafayette Building, some form of Capital Park development, more midtown development, rehab of portions of Grand Blvd., giving the money would fill a big chunk in the rennovation of Cobo. Also, one thing you're forgetting is the Michigan Taxes. all you'll be able to afford after them is a round-trip flight out of the country. |

Build a gigantic animal shelter with on staff vets. Buy a loft in New York. Buy a house in Malibu, CA. Buy a brownstone in London. Go to a health spa every day. Build a roller skating rink downtown Detroit. Buy a bunch of mobile homes and give them to my friends who could afford the lot rent. Give a big party for the homeless. Buy a Winnebego and go exploring. Give a bunch of money for A.I.D.S. research. Contribute to Lowells' forums because his are the best. Buy a bunch of Lowells' paintings. But wait, there's more.... |

Congrats to the both of them. I'm still kind of amazed that for these lotteries, the winners have to agree to having their photographs taken for publicity sake. You'd think it'd be another matter to take their pictures for proof of identification sake but just for publicity? Isn't that putting them at a certain level of risk by doing so? These two people that won are going to be thrust into a spotlight they might not want cast upon them. Think about the danger it could conceivably put them or their loved ones in. That's another reason why Canada's a hair bit more progressive than the US- their lottery winners after proof of identification are allowed to win it all anonymously. |
