Hey I am now in Grand Rapids, came down there a lil bit ago, or as we say in the "D" a grippity grip ago, and I was wondering what the heck is going on with the Book- Caddy building? I seen the plastic and all that jazz up but just wondered. Also when is that Transformers film coming out? wasnt that shot downtown?? |

When was it when Kimberly-Clark started demoing that building--2003? Actually, anybody in Detroit probably knew that... The current Wiki article states: "In July 2003, after years of legal battles to fully acquire the building and to find a developer, the city of Detroit announced a $150 million renovation deal with the Kimberly-Clark Corporation to turn the building into a Renaissance Hotel. Work started shortly after the announcement but came to a halt in November when construction crews discovered more damage than anticipated. The associated cost overrun caused Kimberly-Clark to back out of the deal. A new renovation plan through the Cleveland-based Ferchill Group was announced in November 2005, with the Book-Cadillac to become a Westin Hotel. Work started in August 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2008. It is hoped that its re-opening may spur new business growth in its neighborhood" |

"When was it when Kimberly-Clark started demoing that building--2003? Actually, anybody in Detroit probably knew that... " ( I think you meant Nobody?) Actually it was broadcast on all of the TV stations. There was a fire in the basement caused by a cutting torch. Every station coved it. Lots of smoke and fire engines. Most thought that spelled the doom of the building. There have been so many failed attempts to develop projects here, I think most people are totally numb to them. It seems that an entire generation has to pass until something happens. Either by renovation or asplodeing them. How may plans had we heard about both the Hudson building and site. Nothing Sea Food Factory... Nothing FBI Headquarters... Nothing UA Theater... Nothing Mich Central Station... nothing Broadrick Tower... Nothing Book Building/Tower... Nothing It took over 40 years to build something on the Kern block. The only reason that the casinos are being built is under threat of loosing their license to steal. I am not bitter, just numb. /rant off |

Great point actually last night laying in bed I was thinking the same thing. There are so many plans and ideas but nothing ever takes off most of the time. nice list. THe Broderick has NOTHING going on and the Book Tower all of the tenants say that nothing is ever done and that is just two examples. I have to admit I am afraid that one day work will just stop at the BC. I know I am not alone in that belief I think there will be a collective DY sigh of relief when the doors open in 08! |

You are right Fareastsider, I really want these projects to succeed. It just seems there is always a roadblock and nothing gets done in the end. Its damm discouraging and unfortunately, gives fodder to detractors. I use to think Skulker just "hated buildings" now I think he is just a realist. Lets not give up hope just yet. The Broderick has a developer and a web-site already in place. And the Book Tower just got new owners last year, so lets give them a minute to get their plans together. They also intend to renovate into residential and retail. |

Psip wrote, "It took over 40 years to build something on the Kern block." 33 years actually (still a hell of a long time, I know). After Kern's closed in 1959, various businesses continued to operate in it (and the other buildings on the block) until 1966, when all the buildings were torn down. Compuware finalized its development agreement in Nov. 1999. |

LOL Gistok, I am not questioning the B-C. That is well on its way. To be fair, there are many other developments going on up Woodward. Places I would have never though would see a construction worker again. It's the other projects that just seem to wallow on forever. Another to add to the list: 1001 Woodward.... Nothing (web site not updated since 7-10-2005) |

quote:There have been so many failed attempts to develop projects here, I think most people are totally numb to them. Psip, The Detroit News just ran a story about the recent failures in local development projects:
quote:the multimillion-dollar plans including Costco stores in Canton Township and Woodhaven and the $46 million Yacht Harbor condominium project in St. Clair Shores -- all of which collapsed last month.
quote:St. Clair Shores lost almost $550 million worth of development in one day last month. Two years' worth of extensions expired Feb. 6 for a $500 million high-rise condo and retail project called One Water Place. It would have generated about $76 million in tax revenue over 20 years. In exchange, the city pledged $13 million in road, sewer and water improvements and for part of a parking structure. The same day, approval expired for the Yacht Harbor development on Miller Marina. A similar $104 million mixed-use project that included retail shops and condominiums, The Monarch in Troy, fell apart in December and is being redesigned. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20070320/B IZ/703200385 There was no mention of the failed Silverdome redevelopment in Pontiac, but the News posted a nice list of other projects that have been delayed and/or scrapped:
