All of them are ok. It depends on the viewer's personality.

-WDIV is nice and smooth when it comes to delivering the news and always stay on strict schedules (you know when things are coming on)and depending on which issue they can get in-depth with the issue. ONly thing I dislike is there (only on 4) thing they mention all the time. If you're the one that like the smooth, flowing news that gives you just enough info, this is the newscast for you.

-WJBK does the most in-dpeth investigation out of all the newscasts when it comes to the stories. However, there news flow in my opinion is so screwed that I hardly ever watch them. In the morning is what gets me. They conversate about pointless things 2 minutes off the weather/traffic report. If you're the person however, that likes the in-depth investigation no mattewr how long it takes, this si the newscast for you.

-WXYZ does have a decent schedule and investigate in-depth on some issues, however, they do drag a lot with their corny inputs and jokes. Generally, there in the same vote as WDIV, with the exception of the corny inputs and jokes, where as WDIV's are actually more entertaining. If you like their odd ways (which metro Detroiters do for some reason), but failry strict schedule, then this is the newscast for you

From 2k miles away, I still like Robbie Timmins and Jerry Hodak on their webcast.

She's still a cutie for the miles she has on her. 'Course, I'm observing that as an old fart myself.

Get my news on 91.7FM or 101.9FM. Television news is like a child with A.D.D.

...and 97.1 is a legit news source? I usually watch WXYZ and bounce around the AM dial.

I tend to hate some newscasters a lot faster than I fall in love with 'um, for instance:
Dave Rexroth; so smug. I'd love to take a swing at him for some reason.
Katrina Hancock; way too green for prime time in a market our size. She's really awful.
The guy who had the crack and phone sex deal. I can't remember his name but I hated his religious interjections during the broadcasts. Very tacky.
Peggy Agar, they always give her lame stories and she usually says something to make them seem even lamer.
Wyatt Everhart, needs to change his name to something less pornographic sounding.

What ever happened to Emery King? I thought he was pretty good. I've met Charles Pugh, Ron Savage and Huel Perkins on separate occasions and they all seemed generally nice. The Fox Sports team is the best now that Fred McCloud jumped ship.

97.1 is a legit news source. It has reporters and locations around the globe. Plus, you get to hear the BBC news on it as well, and get a somewhat more worldly perspective. It should be balanced with other news sources as well, obviously. Just not FOX news because that's plain bull$#!+.

For TV, I tend to favor Fox 2, which bears little resemblance to its offensive corporate parent channel, because of their anchors' understated styles. Fanchon Stinger, Kam Cameron, Huel Perkins, Deena Centofani et al. have a degree of humility absent from most of the other bobbling heads that litter the local airwaves (think WDIV's pert'n'perky Rhonda Walker and her 'it girl' hairdo). Al Allen is a warhorse reporter, and you've got to give props to a TV news crew that has the nerve to deviate from blood and gore to do stories on the state Supreme Court and dead zones in Lake Erie.

Unfortunately, the networks are losing their minds over the Tara Lynn Grant story. I mean, sending Ray Sayah to Germany to chase an au pair? Yucky.

"And that will be all from Austin Grant".

Enduro & Johnlodge,

I think you meant to say 91.7 FM, WUOM. That's MI Public Radio out of Ann Arbor. They are indeed a credible news source, likely the most credible in SE Michigan. 97.1 is that talk radio station for guys who never matured beyond middle school.

WDET, 101.9 FM used to have a great news team, but after Michael Coleman came in and butchered up the radio station they lost a lot of their good reporters (and music DJs). Jerome Vaughn is back as news director after a short stint at WUOM. I have a lot of respect for him and hope he can restore the once great DET news team.

As for TV news, I've pretty much given up on that. Channel 2 seems to be the best out of all of them, but it's definitely not top notch news reporting. Channel 4 & 7 seem to have a desire to imitate Entertainment Tonight, Extra or other non-news shows. There are many times when I wish the news directors at local stations would just say "We have no good stories to report on tonight. So we won't waste your time or ours with a bunch of schlep and non-news. We'll be playing a rerun instead." I've honestly wondered out loud many times how Carmen Harlan and Devan Scillian can get on the camera half the time. Wouldn't your conscience after a while get to you and convince you to refuse to do half the stupid stories they report on?

Wasn't Austin Grant on Channel 9? How about Dick Westercamp or Paul Williams, early WWJ newscasters, when you had one anchor read the news in front of one camera, sitting at a small desk. The newscast was 15 minutes long.

When Joan Silvi left late last year I really thought that was going to be the final nail in the WDET News coffin. Losing Craig Fahle, Matt McLean, Jerome Vaughn, and Joan Silvi in a 8 month period was a HUGE hit. But I'm pleasantly surprised, nay thrilled, to see Jerome's return. I can listen to WDET again! It's like the grown-ups are back in charge.

Thanks for the clarity, Bvos!

Your Entertainment Tonight statement reminded me of another annoying development. Stations cross promoting their shows (American Idle... I mean Idol! and during the noon broadcast soap operas). It's really out of hand. And Karen Drew and Ray can you two please leave Germany? It's gotta suck to travel all that way to find her daddy slam a door in your face. Good for him.

"WXYT is in Southfield correct? Where does FOX2 broadcast from?"

WXY(Z) and WJBK both broadcast in Southfield. Fox2 studio is on 9 Mile and WXYZ's is on 10 Mile.

By the way, I despise Eric Wilson. He can never seem to get the forecast right with his "special timings".

All of the TV towers are in Southfield or at least along 696, I think, which is why WXYZ and WJBK are there (facilities on-site with the transmitter, probably cheaper).

The most iconic newscaster in metro Detroit has to be Sonny Elliot. I remember back in the 60's when he did the local weather.... always talking about Enga-denga-dine... and pulling of the Keewenaw Penninsula off the state map, and pointing to it with that "vvvvft" sound.

And then there was his "Sonny Elliot at the Zoo" show. A true Detroit legend, who now does 5PM and 6PM weather reports on NewsRadio 950.

He must be near 80 years old now.

Brother golick and 65memories share the old-timers award with me! Hooray for Austin Grant, straight from across the river on CKLW.
And Paul Williams will be remembered in my book for doing the black and white tv coverage from the State Fair Grounds, "color man" for those wrestling matches, cracking his peanuts into the microphone as the wrestlers cracked each others knuckles in the ring.

I agree with Treelock about my morning newscast. The crew on channel 2 shouldn't be confused with Fox News. The young, skinny black guy kind of creeps me out, though. Somethin' 'bout that boy just ain't quite right. I watch News4 sometimes, later, but I should confess that I've been digging on Carmen Harlan for about thirty years, now. And, Sonny Elliot's schtick might be well past stale, at this point, but Sonny is The Man, Jack, so don't come in here talking any shit about him, y'hear?

I remember my folks taking me to a Sonny Elliot restaurant at metro airport. I could be wrong, I was very young.

Anyways, hearing him on 950 is pretty cool. He's got a great way with words, like a folksy rapper. I'm 31 so it's not tired sounding to my ears.

Not only will he always be remembered as the voice of the Lions ("the ball's on the 35...let's call it the 42", but Jjaba and the_rock most likely remember when he also announced the Tiger games, sponsored by Speedway 79 and Goebel beer (Brewster the Goebel rooster). I don't watch much local news except in the morning and it's only Fox 2. I like them all except for Lee Thomas and Jay Towers. And I hate that they cross-promote American Idol on their newscast. It's a karaoke contest, not news!
Channel 4 is horrible, seems like they're always shouting. Seems like they try to lord over everyone by calling themselves Powercast4 or whatever. They totally blew it when they pre-empted Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy one night last week to broadcast the Tara Grant show. Ugh, a journalistic low.
I couldn't name anyone on chan 7 except for that weathercaster, Shay something or other. She lost all credibility when she referred to a temp of 7 below zero as "negative 7."
BTW, Sonny's forecast comes on at 4:20 and 5:20pm. I grew up listening to him and enjoy his cornball jokes. I actually won a contest that took radio listeners on a bus trip to Motor City Casino with him! We enjoyed the buffet and lost $20.

Here's something I have noticed.

Beth McLeod, the traffic honey for WDIV, works some crazy-ass hours. She does the morning commute at 5 a.m. AND the station's new 4 p.m. broadcast AND the standard 5 p.m. broadcast. She also does the Lottery, and a coworker said he saw her doing some promo the other night at a Pistons game.

She's married to Fred McLeod, who recently went to Cleveland to become the Cavs' version of George Blaha. Is she trying to block out the pain of loneliness? Or does she snort a ton of blow?

chan7 seems to have the most in depth reporting, yet the personalities on that station just make it uncomfortable watching--really awkward.

i can't deny i watch chan4 often purely for the likability of their newscasters. speaking of which, rachel bianco on wdiv is quite the hottie, but wdiv seems to have too many reporters to know what to do with...what happened to m.l. elrick? i haven't caught him on lately. coming from the freep and exposing all kwame's antics, he's an actual newsman who seems misused doing these cheap investigations...

I like Channel 4 also for the Newscasters as they're the only ones with some type of Personality. Fox 2's would be a close second. If Fox would fix their wacky newscast schedule, then maybe I would watch them more. I like Channel 7, but the personalities (particularly Stephen Clark) throws everything off for me and I don't care for Shay Ryan and that other woman o the Weekends either. Notice though, Jerry Hodak always gets that "I want to kill you" look in his face when Stephen Clark cracks some type of joke about teh weather.

I usually just watch the news in the mornings to see what the commute is like and the only ones that give relatively up-to-date broadcasts is Fox 2. And they seem to do it without much pretensiousness too. They got the workhorse in Al Allen covering any street corner in any inclimate weather so how can we go wrong there?

It does make me miss WDIV's Bob Bennett though.

They had Bob Bennett out in the downtown streets so much that, due to the frequency of hearing, "from downtown, Bob Bennett, News 4," my wife and I started calling him Downtown Bob Bennett. I liked him, too. Straight professional, no cute stuff, no screwing around trying to be an "on-air personality."

Damn it, I KNEW it, but I should have paused to look it up, because I HATE it when I get a person's name wrong: Sonny's last name is ELIOT!! One "L," not two!!
On behalf of DetroitYes, many self-flaggelating apologies to Sir Sonny Eliot, Detroit Meteorologist Emeritus.

Thanks, Ed Golick!

Jackie Page is an absolutely monster. Her shoulders would cause a lane closure if she was walking on the sidewalk.

Treelock: They likely tape the traffic reports for the later news casts. I think Erin Nicole does the same. They usually just tell you what closures are expected the next day. I can't speak for her personal life!
Desterdale: Erin Nicole is much cuter when she's not in her newscaster make up and clothes. Hubba hubba!

Here's a weird thing I've observed. Any time Cheryl Chodun on Channel 7 is reporting a story, any kind of story, she is always outside.

What, no Stu Klitenic?

He was a jerk.

Jac LeGoff and John Kelly. Detroit's own version of Huntley and Brinkley.

I grew up with Carmen Harlan and WDIV. Loved Carmen and Mort...not so much Devon Scillion. It may be that I really hate saying that name...Devon Scillian. Sounds made up. Like his stage name, and his real name is Shamus McTittybarn.

For style and technology, I like WDIV still.

All in all though I have to say my reliance on news is all web-based, nationally it would be msnbc.com and cnn.com along with a cadre of blogs, and locally it's....drumroll....dddddddddd ddddd: DetroitYes!

Jac LeGoff and Vic Caputo!

i remember them from watching the news when my grandparents babysat for me. then they would have Cronkite on CBS with Rather, Safer, Wallace and Bradley all reporting from Sai-Gon or Cambodia or Laos or Thailand...

i watch Devin and Carmen or Ruth the most. i think that Kim Adams, Karen Drew are absolutely knock-out hot. the only real reason to watch...

XYZ has held onto Chodun, Conway, Val Clark, Robbie Timmons, Diana Lewis, Erik Smith, Hodak, etc, instead of being obsessed only with young, lower-priced "personalities"--there are many far smaller markets around where "seasoned" personalities are shuffled out well before they hit 50...I honestly think Circle 7 deserves credit for this--do you think this Grace Gilchrist's influence?

I like WXYZ and WDIV for their graphics also. WJBK have had the same ones for over 10 years, that's what sort of turn me off from them too. However, they do have the best morning cast while WDIV have the best evening cast. I like Ben Bailey from WJBK, probably the second best forecaster during the morning behind Dave Rexroth, only because he details more. WXYZ has an odd schedule during the morning. The best forecaster in Detroit though has to be Chuck Gaidica then Jerry Hodak.

Oh yeah, good one Chuckles. I forgot about my girl Carolyn Clifford! Enduro, I did see Erin Nicole at a couple of Pistons games and she does look a lot better when she's not dressed in 'office professional'. Best one of all time is Lucy Noland who anchored FOX2's morning newscast.

Names from the past bring back memories
We always watched Jac Legoff. But names like Vic Caputo and Carl Cederberg, wow that was awhile ago. Is Vic Caputo any relation to the sports writer Pat Caputo? One guy that sticks out to me is Dwayne X. Riley. He kind of went serious to goofy during his career. But I enjoyed his off wall stories

Wow, just looked up wxyz.com to check out Erin Nicole...not too shabby! I also like Carolyn Clifford, sorta got the bedroom eyes.

As far as Fox 2 goes, Jackie Paige is kinda milf-y, Robin Schwartz is a Hebrew Hottie, Monica Gayle looks even better in person and what has happened to Fanchon Stinger? She used to do the morning news with Alan Lee but I haven't seen her in 2 weeks!

And yes, Lucy Noland was the hottest of them all.

I used to like Amyre Makupson too, she seemed like a real pro.

I have less of a beef with WDIV's broadcasters than I do with their product - THERE'S NO NEWS THERE! It's maybe three news stories, sports, weather, and the rest is all promos, teasers, and filler!

TRue, but there the most orderly out of all the broadcast stations in Detroit. You know what to expect and when.

The Channel 4 News team Carmen, Devin, Bernie and Chuck, are in waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too good of a mood. But it makes watching the news more pleasant.

I also enjoy watching Carmen & Devin hosting the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and watching them at the WDIV booth at Campus Martius events.

Most underated WDIV Garigiola. This guy is a polished pro. Nobody even mentioned him. He does all assignments for WDIV from head newscaster to off sight reporter.

golick---thanks for posting the photo of Austin Grant. Wow, in living black and white, too.
And speaking of favorite local newscasters, allow me to put in a vote for my neighbor and friend, the late Dean Miller who preceded Mort Crim on Channel 4. He was anchor for the 11 PM news, and began each broadcast with "And a good evening to you".
He was an impeccable dresser, and had a voice as sweet as syrup, a wonderful person even though he graduated from Ohio State. We miss him.

His embellishments made it.

Channel 4 is the most polished newscast, but Fox2 seems more down-to-earth and I tend to watch them in the morning.

There will never be another Bill Bonds. bless his soul.

I used to watch ch 4, but the last few years its been like a ET style news cast. I've found ch 7 to be more serious and more in-depth. There will never be anyone like Bill Bonds again. I've noticed our local papers have dumbed down the past years along with Ch 4 also.
