Once again good job Bullet. Looks like Hanson's Windows has been in a lot of those neighborhoods, ripping people off with their overpriced windows and siding. :-(

Great pics...I used to repair copiers until a few years ago, downtown, new center, Hamtramck and the eastside. I used to drive thru this same area daily...

Before long, many of these burned out structures will look like the first photo at Chene and Canfield, as the Detroit Prairie continues to evolve. Some of these shots are just a final look as we say goodbye to a small, (and I feel, important) bit of our local history. I know many of you out there could care less about this topic, but as warned, here are some more:

: Side note: There is lots of infrastructure work going on just under the surface of many of these areas. When the time comes, I think we shall see a quick rise of new buildings and homes here.

Interesting to note that there's not a helluva lot of green on the trees yet. Adds to the starkness of those shots.

Thanks for your work, Bullet. Enjoyable!

Thanks, Ray1936. I like starkness. Soon trees and shrubs will hide most of what I shoot, as the landscape takes on a new definition. I still managed to snag a few keepers though, in spite of the sunny sky. Fareastsider: on Milwaukee (I think)

Where is this at?

Nice photos. I was on the eastside last week walking around and taking some photos also. Since we never really went there for any reason when I was a kid except the occasional family gatherings at the polish Yacht Club, I never really got to know the eastside. A lot of character there for sure but much of it is just disappearing.

One tiny bit of advice if I may: Take a few photos with inanimate objects in the foreground. Like a glove, a piece of house, or pile of something. I shot video for some time in Detroit and it's a photographers dream. Since you like taking photos, I just thought I'd add that. Looking for something that exemplifies the scene and adds depth of field really increases the aesthetic appeal to the viewer. :2cents: Thanks for sharing.

Lombaowski, thanks for the 2 cents, I can use it. The time stamp prob is one I am addressing as well. Mortalman that is indeed snow, let us not forget with spring here, the snow is mostly at our backs. Fareastsider, I love your shots, were they taken from your submarine? Thanks Milwaukee, you’re a real pal for giving encouragement. I was in Gary once long ago and would like to road trip there again. You game? (jk) Hambone, I'll see what I can do. I will be heading to Eastern Market next Saturday. The Post Office shot is on Milwaukee or Layman Pl. between Russell and Orleans. (Approximately) Thanks all. More as time permits…

Bullet,
If memory serves me correct, that post office is on Russell south of Milwaukee on the east side of the street. And, that large building attached to it is an old People's State Savings bank. The man walking in the coat would be directly across the street, right before an old liquor store.
Once again, excellent job thanks.

I remember the building with the rounded castle like entrance. Corner of Milwaukee and Russell (northeast) used to be a fortune cookie distributor some years back. I'm sure that wasn't the original use though. And that large white building with the man door on the side looks like the old Lasky furniture warehouse next to the rail road tracks behind Grainger's on the GM Blvd across from the Poletown plant.

Bulletmagnet, I would be careful taking pictures of occupied homes up close. Residents might feel that you are invading their privacy.

Your pictures are heart-felt. Ninety-nine percent of those pictures are from areas I know. St. Anthony's Church was my church and just closed back in June 2006. Many of my grade school friends went to East Catholic High. I saw the priest of St. Anthony with some guys around the historical marker. They're probably going to move it to the combined church, Good Shepard, at Parkview and Jefferson.

Also, I'm in those areas quite a bit since my parents live only a few blocks south of St. Anthony's Church. At 43 I've seen those areas decline from being extremely vibrant to what they are now. Case in point, my parents live on a block that only has 14 occupied homes on it where it once had 48. I can remember all but two. Needless to say, seeing these pictures is depressing.

Good advice, Royce. I will take that to heart. And thanks.

P.S. Royce, do you or your parents have any photos of your home or neighborhood you could share? I would like to see them if you do, or any stories of your time livening there. Any are welcome.
Thanks in advance - Bullet

I ran into irate homeowners twice while photographing their homes. One case was a home I lived in in Detroit years back. As I took a few shots to compare "then and now", the current owner came out of the house more curious than angry, and an explanation soothed things over.

The second time was my wife's old home in Allen Park, and this guy was really irate. I was in my car taking photos out the window, and even though I tried to be diplomatic in my explanations, he was getting hotter and hotter, so I dropped it into drive and took off down Southfield.

Discretion is the better part of valor.
